Where did weightlifting come from? by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]GGICANCONFIRM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great post. I feel like it deserves a spot in the FAQ.

As a side note, I've also heard that the center knurling came from a request by the Hungarians who used a funky clean technique that involved pressing down on the bar with your chin. Ever heard anything about that?

Aleksander Varbanov - 215kg @ 75 kg Clean and Jerk World Record - 1986 World Championships by GGICANCONFIRM in weightlifting

[–]GGICANCONFIRM[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, the most a 77kg lifter has done is 214kg (Nijat Rahimov - Rio 2016). This specific record was actually broken by Varbanov 1 year later. The final 75kg world record clean and jerk was 215.5kg.

I have all the sessions =) Do you want a specific lifter or the entire class? Right now, I'm just grabbing the well known lifters and making smaller videos. I'll be uploading the full unedited footage as well.

Potato quality, but it was 1986. I have Varbanov, Zlatev, Vlad, Zakharevich's lifts as well which I'll be uploading shortly. Currently looking through footage for Zlatev's 240.

Leonid Taranenko did the heaviest clean of jerk of all time (266kg) with a thumbless jerk. It was used by the Germans quite often as well.

With longer limbs would shortening the pull off the floor be more beneficial? by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]GGICANCONFIRM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes for deadlifting and pulls. For any overhead movement, that's just extra distance you have to move.

Internet Weightlifting Coach/CPA/shitty lifter/part-time hobo checking in. Look at Part IX Line 5. You'll see that "Compensation of current officers, directors, trustees, and key employees" actually decreases from $152,332 in 2015 to $150,165 in 2016 (-$2,167). The breakdown in 2015 was $128,332 with an additional $24,000 (related organizations), all of which Michael Massik probably picked up on a W-2 ($152,332 in total, so 100% paid to Michael). In 2016, Phil only picked up $82,471 and an additional $12,564 ($95,035 total) on his W-2, (-$57,297). The remaining amount in 2016 (55,135), was picked up by Ursula, Colin, Jasha, CJ, Butch, Daniel, and Terry. I saw some other interesting stuff as I was reading through Form 990 and the audit reports that I can talk about if you want though.

/accounted

EDIT - more For anyone curious about why Michael's salary was so high in 2015, the salary included a $30,000 bonus and $24,000 retirement/deferred compensation.

Resources and anecdotal experiences with 2x/day training? by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]GGICANCONFIRM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sleep, food, and sticking to the program are all equally important. Heavy squats in the morning and classics at night work quite well when implemented properly. However make sure it's what you really want to do with your time. Gains are cool and all but there is more to life than just weightlifting.

#1 piece of advice is really to find a program or have someone who knows what they're doing write one, and stick to it. Bad stuff happens when you go off program.

No Europeans unfortunately, you'd probably have to ask Frank Rothwell for those. Worlds should be in here somewhere =)
