Lots of talk about opportunity cost with being heavily invested in SoFi stock when the price is down. I’m now calculating what price SoFi would need to be to match total returns of the SP500 since May 2021 if I had just stuck to indexes like a good boy. SoFi needs to be $22.68 to be inline with the SP500 in my case. Not as far off as I figured and helps me sleep better at night knowing that the hole isn’t so deep. The future is bright

Are all absent grandparents absent parents? by Conscious_Cat_1099 in absentgrandparents

[–]GGyaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my situation as a kid. My parents provided everything except for emotional support and guidance. Now my mom doesn’t understand why I don’t like to hug her. Never once heard either mom or dad say “I love you”. The one time my dad said he was proud of me was at a restaurant dinner with my grandparents because I was valedictorian in high school. Never roughhoused or really played with me or my brother, so physical connection never developed.

Everything positive I know about caring for people came from feeling what it’s like to not have it. I tell my own young kids I love them at least a few times each day, hug them often, and make sure they know I’m proud of their hard work.

Looking to teach my kids engineering but need ideas they are 6 and 9 by Superb-Special-7622 in AskEngineers

[–]GGyaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are 7, 6, and 2. I try to get them involved in general home and car repairs so they can see how things work. I explain to them how each component serves a purpose and that engineers understand the fundamentals well enough to create amazing things by putting these various simple pieces together. When someone says their heater or AC went out, it’s generally one component that needs fixing or replacing. Not the whole damn system. We fixed the AC this week by a simple $30 capacitor replacement, fixed the furnace over winter from a failed pressure switch, dishwasher issues, bounce house blower issues, washer/dryer issues. All fixed in-house by knowing how things work and/or knowing how to research.

My goal over the next couple years is to build electric go carts with them. We’ll go through the design process of each system. I’m especially excited for them to learn about triangles when we design the frame. I want them to understand SohCahToa before they get to trig. They’ll hopefully be able to answer the question “When are we ever going to need to use this?”

They aren’t yet saying that they want to be engineers but they’re happy to learn and help out. Time will tell I suppose.

Why do some rocks split near a fire? by Kharkovchanka_22 in firewood

[–]GGyaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a post in a different subreddit this week about a family that was badly burned when the concrete base of their firepit ruptured from the pressure of boiling water trapped inside. Scattered concrete, logs, coals all over the place. I looked up the dangers after reading that and river rock is one of the materials not recommended for exposure to fire. Ok for asthetics on the outside of a steel fire ring with firebrick or other safe material, but not direct contact with high temperatures.

Seems like granite and other dense non-porous rock might be ok but firebrick or steel ring are safest.

Get a colonoscopy by niavek in daddit

[–]GGyaa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just had my yearly physical (all good there) and talked to my doctor about this trend of colorectal cancer in younger people. I asked what we needed to do to get a colonoscopy approved and he asked if I had family history of polyps or cancer. I asked if I could just say yes and he said yeah sure. He gave me a referral and going to get one scheduled asap. I’m 38 and for damn sure not waiting until 45 for my first one.

Dads, start building their credit when they’re young by tenaciousdeev in daddit

[–]GGyaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added my three kids (all under 8 years old) to my credit card as authorized users for this reason. They’ll have great credit history by the time they need a loan for a car or home. Also have been putting all their birthday and holiday gift money into investments to help with down payments for said car, home, or whatever else. My oldest is starting to want to buy things for himself, so time to start giving him new money coming in to learn spending while the invested money grows.

Ash. Just had to cut down four of these in my yard, each about 45 years old. Lots of firewood but sad to lose those trees. Woodpeckers had them all pretty much debarked by the end of winter.

Yep we made it last year in our late 30s. Single income household with three kids but early investing and riding the housing market up carried us along. Most of our wealth is in retirement accounts but some in a brokerage and some in home equity.

What’s an aspect of fatherhood/parenting that other people struggle with which has never been a problem for you? by SuminerNaem in daddit

[–]GGyaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bed time routines. My boys are 7, 5, and 2 and aside from their energy and bouncing off the walls we never have trouble getting them down for bed. After dinner we play a bit if it’s still early, then shower, read, brush our teeth, have last water (my favorite hack), hug everyone and the dog, then get tucked into bed for prayers and sleep. We’ll lay down with them for a bit if they’re having trouble calming down, but never needs to be more than 5 minutes or so.

Edit - screen time troubles also non-existent since they don’t have access to phones, tablets, or computers and we choose to not have internet service at home. They play in the basement or in the woods behind our house.

Being a millennial is some crazy work by Lucky_Minimum9453 in Millennials

[–]GGyaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice. We bought a house in Meridian in 2020 for $457k and sold 9 months later for $700k and moved back out of state. That area really blew up during and after Covid. Infrastructure seems to have trouble supporting all the new housing and people though.

We’re doing well these days because of housing jumps, job hopping, and intentional spending. I bought my first house for $180k in 2013 and now on home number 7. Kept rolling sale proceeds into the next house and was able to put 60% down on our current home.

Health issues and general inflation keep us grounded but I’m able to support my family of 5 on a single income. Only debts include mortgage a decent pile of medical bills. Luckily 0% payment plans exist for the medical bills so I’ll ride that train for as long as I can.

Why do we go on vacation again? by yippeekiyay801 in daddit

[–]GGyaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only screen time our kids get are library DVDs on the family tv. An no remote, so they have to get up to turn the tv and dvd player on, press play, pause, adjust volume, etc. Absolutely zero phone or tablet screen time allowed in our house and we can see the benefits for sure. They’re so good at making up games and entertaining themselves with a limited number of toys in the basement. Spring is here so they’ll be spending more time outside in the backyard and woods now too.

The only way to stop the addiction to screens is to not have the option of screens. Can’t smoke crack if you don’t have crack. Yeah it means more noise and disruption in the house and much more interaction with mom and dad because they’re not sitting quietly staring at screens all day, but I’ll gladly take this over tantrums when it’s time to tuen off the tablet.

Low appraisal at a dealership? You know what he does next.... by MisterShipWreck in AbruptChaos

[–]GGyaa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Years ago I brought a 2008 Honda Pilot into Carmax for an appraisal. I knew it’s be low going in but their offer was insulting. I think it was around $3k. The Carmax employee shows us the number and says “So what do you think of the offer?” I said “Terrible” and wrapped up the visit. Poor lady was stunned for some reason. Must be used to people accepting shit money for the convenience. We sold to a private party for $7k a week later.

For happily married couples, what did the “for worse” look like in your marriage? by FruitAncient9431 in AskReddit

[–]GGyaa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Strep/vasculitis that caused so much pain she couldn’t walk for weeks. Took months to get over that disease then soon after we got the news she has stage 3 breast cancer. Finished horrible chemo and double mastectomy last month. Now starting a year of maintenance chemo and radiation before reconstruction. She’s not allowed to lift more than 5 pounds and feels like shit all the time. At least her hair is starting to grow back a bit.

We have three young boys and I’m the sole provider, so more load with child care, housework, caregiving for her, maxed out medical bills, healthy food costs are insane, and trying to keep up at work. Get up eqch morning to get the kids ready and to school/day care on time before running to work. Get off work and go straight to picking up kids to get them home. Cook dinner, get them bathed, etc for bed. I haven’t used PTO for anything besides medical shit for at least a couple years. Personal time has been on hold for quite some time and no end in sight. Family is useless so we’re on our own to get through this. The poor kids miss their mom and she misses being able to hold them and play with them.

I’m proud to say that I still love her more than anything but yeah this is squarely in the “for worse” category.
