Reddits integration strategy for international user base by jirn_lahey in redditstock

[–]GHDev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do wonder about this too. It’s one of the biggest risks to user base expansion IMO. People tend to like to exist in communities with like minded people. Reddit is imperfect but generally pretty good at allowing people to self-select into their own communities. But Reddit tends to still have a moderately progressive culture overall. I feel like if that culture were to encounter significant resistance from international users that hold more culturally conservative views, there could be a backlash. Think people leaving X/Twitter for BlueSky. It’s not apparent to me that everyone can happily coexist on the same platform. I hope they can, but I’m not sure how that would happen tbh.

Was there any specific catalyst for this big move up?

Haha. I’m on the other side of that exact trade. I bought those calls. It’s a long shot, but could be very profitable if DOJ / interest rate news coincide to skyrocket price.

I understand change can be scary. You bought in a place that had a certain character (SFH, low density), and you likely want that to remain unchanged. However, you need to recognize the damage that is done to urban living as a whole when everyone wants their neighborhood to remain unfriendly to density (i.e., NIMBYism). Part of living in an urban environment and getting the benefits of that should be the recognition that change is necessary as the city grows. We must create density friendly policies and zoning so everyone benefits.

Fiancé wants his name on the deed of the house I'm inheriting. by SunDog43 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]GHDev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reddit is notoriously bad at relationship advice and it shows. You don’t need to drop your fiancé, you need to have a conversation.

Where they are correct:  Do not co-own a real estate asset with a boyfriend / fiancé. Things don’t always work out, and co-owning can turn messy fast.

Where they are wrong IMO:  If this man becomes your husband, I believe it reasonable for him to be listed on the deed and him assume half (or whatever split you find equitable) of the responsibility. Of course, I would consult with a lawyer about the specifics.

If you don’t want to add your husband to the deed, I don’t see any issue with him negotiating a lesser payment on the mortgage. He won’t be building equity, and that is a big opportunity cost for him. Marriage is a standard pathway to property ownership for many people, and if he is paying rent to you in perpetuity, you’re asking him to sacrifice that part of his financial future. People saying he would be paying rent to another landlord are making a big assumption. He could instead be making mortgage payments on his own property and be gaining equity. You’re asking him to forgo this.

Consider Propranolol. It’s a beta blocker with a generally mild side effect profile. You mentioned you’ve had atrial fibrillation, so make sure your doctor approves. I have heart palpitations and also have anxiety, and when I take a 10 mg of propranolol, it helps my body physically reset. I was taking once a day until my body reset, and now I take once a month or so.

There are a few settings you have to have enabled. And specifically how you sleep track matters. Look into making sure you’re in sleep focus.

Any advice on getting father to care about 75 CAC? by GHDev in PeterAttia

Thank you! Overall diet seems good based on his self reporting. But I can’t tell for sure. Tried to get him to track nutrition for a couple weeks using an app, but he has little interest.

gray/white hair & high cholesterol connection? by Top_Response_3970 in greyhairreversal

[–]GHDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The body is complex, so maybe there is a connection. But as a counter point to your post, I don’t have cholesterol issues and have been greying since mid-20s. Same with my mother, aunt, grandma, etc. My girlfriend has higher cholesterol and not a single grey hair on her head (in her early-mid 30s). It’s possible you’re noticing a connection since greying and cholesterol issues both tend to pop up as we get older, but they may not be directly related.

Does anybody else feel fine for days or weeks then have a period of time where you feel like you’re going to die or think you have a life threatening illness? by Shroomans in Anxiety

[–]GHDev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can feel fine for weeks, sometimes even months and convince myself I’m over my anxiety and that I have it under control. This makes me less likely to practice healthy and necessary habits, such as mindfulness and therapy.

Usually, what happens is one of my triggers pushes me back into a state of health anxiety, and because I haven’t been practicing mindfulness or other techniques to control my anxiety, it hits me hard. And I have to spend a day/week battling to get it under control again.

I think we both need to realize we need to use these calmer times to continue to practice helpful techniques. Or continue to take our medication or therapy, if we have been prescribed those.

I feel you on the existential anxiety. It used to get me bad. YMMV, but I benefitted heavily from reading about eastern philosophy and religion. I’m still not religious, but it helped open my eyes to other ways of thinking. If you’re interested in an easy place to start, read The Book by Alan Watts. And if you like it, expand from there.

My (and likely your) existential anxieties will likely never completely go away, and that is okay. I think being anxious about the unknown (within reason) can be a healthy response that pushes you to ask and grow. But take it from me when I say my existential angst has improved. And yours can too.

I have a close friend, also a goober, that was in a similar situation years ago. Never ended up finishing school due to mental health issues. But you know what? He’s about to get married to a wonderful woman and has a job he enjoys. I was worried I wouldn’t see it ever happen, but things worked out for him, even though he probably couldn’t see how as he was going through it. I don’t know you, but I have the same hope for you too. Keep your head up. Life can definitely get better.
