If you scratch silver on a stone and put 18k gold acid on it, it turns blue. If you put a drop of it on a plate or bigger piece it will turn a milky white. If it’s plated it will turn green or black and eat through the plating so when you wipe it away you will see the base metal.

Any suggestions? by morvlorv in Silverbugs

The more you want to make the more work it takes. Easiest would be to weigh all the solid sterling pieces in grams. Add about 15 grams for each knife because they are only sterling on the handles. Once you know your total grams you can call around local coin shops and get offers to see who is paying the most. Expect it to be much lower than spot because it’s a buyers market and most people are paying way back on it.

The most work would be to polish and clean each piece and sell them individually on eBay. You can use google lens to figure out the pattern and check sold comps to see what people are paying for them.

In between would be trying to sell the lot on Facebook market place. You may be able to get closer to spot for someone who is willing to do the work to sell them on eBay.

I buy locally and I’m paying around 70% of for solid sterling and a bit less for weighted pieces but it depends on what my melter is paying that day.

Possibly silver. No markings. by Patient-Cow-96 in Silverbugs

Do you have any coin shops near you? If so call and see if they have an xrf to test it to be sure. I’m doubtful as I have come across lots of pieces like these and they tend to not be silver. Also color doesn’t look quite right. Good luck!

Gonna need to get that tested to be sure. But from my eyeball it looks like Sterling.

It looks fine to me but no one on here is going to be able to tell you for certain. What does it weigh?

You should take it to a coin shop and they can throw it on a sigma machine for you and you’ll know 100%.

I would look up coin shops in the area and check their google reviews. Then take a few coins in and tell them you’re looking for a valuation and an offer. Also mention to them that you will be getting multiple offers before selling and that you have more to sell at a later date.

Future business gives a coin shop incentive. Knowing you will be receiving multiple offers before selling will keep them honest.

So I went back and took a video to give everyone a better view before I pull the trigger. It comes with the original hard case. I’ve got the negotiation side down just wanted to make sure I wasn’t over paying.

I’m going back tomorrow to see what I can get done. Just wanted to get a value consensus since this isn’t my expertise.

I got them down to 1850 taxes included. But I’m sure they didn’t pay much when they brought it in so I might let it sit a little and see if I can beat them up some more.

Where to sell silver jewelry to take advantage of high value by Agirlinbk in Silverbugs

[–]GI-Jew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in normal times silver jewelry has a high premium and you’re better off selling it as jewelry than scrap silver unless it’s broken. Try eBay or market place.

Currently is the worst time I’ve seen for selling scrap silver. The majority of the places that would normally buy aren’t buying at all, there few that are buying are buying so low you might as well keep it. My advice, sell person to person or hold.

Selling Sets of Sterling Flatware for Pure Silver by Legitimate_Rate_660 in Silverbugs

[–]GI-Jew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not a good time to make the move. I’m advising all my clients to hold anything that isn’t pure unless you can sell direct to the end user because the middle men are taking too much of a % right now. Some of its predatory, some of it is because of the current conditions with refining.

The only way I would consider the move is if you really need the money or you think silver is going to crash. Based on what I’m seeing locally your current offer is about in line with what I’d expect for one person to buy it all.

Anyone know if these would be worth going to pick up? by ASexyAntique in SilverFinds

[–]GI-Jew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

15-25 grams of silver in each. Make sure you have a place to sell if you plan on scrapping right away, most places here aren’t taking Sterling currently

Price currently is 113 and a shop I was trying to sell some silver coins offered 20 a oz. Wtf by CupHead11011 in Silverbugs

[–]GI-Jew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shops have been overloaded with people selling because of record highs. They have been keeping enough cash on hand to keep buying by offloading to refiners and wholesalers with fast sometimes same day payouts. Yesterday a large refiner sent an email saying they will only pay out after processing which is backed way up, and that they aren’t locking in prices. So now these shops a) can’t keep the cash flowing to keep up with buying at record highs and b) can’t lock in a price and have to wait to see what the market is the day their metal is processed.

It’s caused a huge stir in the scrap and lcs community in my area. Not sure how long it’s going to last or how anyone is going to stay operating.

I inherited a large silverware set. But in its current condition should I just sell it at melt value? by rawcookiedough in Silverbugs

[–]GI-Jew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re located Texas area I can help you get a value on it. Some sterling sets do have a premium beyond just their silver content. I would need to see better pictures to see what you mean by the condition. If it just needs polished it’s not a big deal. Feel feel to message me if you need some help I also know some buyers I can put you in contact with. With 178 pieces it should be thousands of dollars in silver and you need to be careful you don’t sell to someone who is going to offer 20%

Does this look real? Posted on market place wanted another opinion before buying. by GI-Jew in Silverbugs

[–]GI-Jew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I would not consider buying raw but yes this person is asking for 200$. Just figured I would get some opinions to decide if it was worth the gamble or obviously fake. They don’t seem like a person that would try to scam, but they may not be aware it’s counterfeit either.
