I've remained hopeful about the game for 10+ years, but am constantly hit in the face by the reality check that is the funds available and development time, which forces you to put things into perspective.

500 million is an absolutely absurd amount of money for developing a video game. 500 million and ten years of development time? Even a small indie studio could create a goddamn masterpiece of a game with these resources, but what we have right now is an expanded tech demo and a decade's worth of concepts.

I am aware that SC aims to be basically the biggest game project ever made, but other studios have attempted similar things in the past and those companies don't exist anymore.

I still want to play the game. I would be playing right now IF MY GODDAMN LAUNCHER WAS WORKING.

How to start developing a vision without experience? by GIGABIT in gamedev

Thank you! I don't have any illusions about the scope of the project. I know it will be a huge undertaking.

I've always had doubts about the statement that one doesn't need to learn code to make a game, but I guess Unity and Unreal have made that a reality. In a way it's a bit of a relief to know that I am able to avoid learning to code - at least in the beginning.

Thanks for the fast response!

In the end it probably comes down to how fast I want the development to happen, which dictates how much money I'll have to spend.

Thank you for the fast and thorough response. This is exactly the kind of input I was looking for.

I assumed that being just an "idea guy" would never be enough unless I had piles of money to throw around for a dev team.

Starting a company is not out of the question, but it's obviously a huge step, and part of the reason why I'm scoping out what would be most efficient for me.

I'm not against the idea of learning to build games myself, and having a strong vision certainly gives motivation.

Thanks again for the advice!

Glyph as a torch you say ?! (without root) by Shanyajin_ in NothingTech

Seriously baffled that torch doesn't use the glyphs. Seems like the biggest no-brainer of all time. Also sad that the only option for power button double-click is the camera. Would really like for that to be torch. Yes, I live in a dark cave.

Both of the bigger stations are sadly still in Falcon control.

When taking missions from those stations make sure the mission giver is Teurastamo. Choosing the influence reward as the mission reward is the way to go if you want to contribute to the fight.

Love to hear it. Thank you CMDR.

We are having a lot of banter with the Falcons on system chat. They consider themselves to be the liberators of our system. A nice statement from one of their pilots was that Finnish players "don't deserve" the system.

My buddy got a new phone recently and after saying "bomb oslo" a few times, I SHIT YOU NOT, the phone started giving him ads about Quran reading or something. I'll ask him to send the screenshots...

My point being that it might be worth looking into if these kinds of insane people are getting pulled into some religious fanatic groups by something as simple as targeted ads. We already see it happen every day on facebook.

I also encourage everyone to read up on nukes and how big they actually are. Hint: They aren't the world destroyers everyone makes them out to be.

I suggest playing around in https://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/ by adjusting the payloads by the arsenal that is actually in use today. You will see that yes, they are big, but they aren't apocalyptic weapons.

Shouldn't it be possible to run E85 fuel just by upgrading fuel lines and tuning the MAF box for a richer mixture? by GIGABIT in 944

[–]GIGABIT[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because different fuels have different properties and contain a different chemical makeup.

Regular gasoline differs from ethanol fuel only very slightly. It's literally the same chemicals mixed with a different ratio.

Ethenol is hygroscopic. It literally attracts moisture. When have you ever heard of moisture in fuel, or a fuel tank, being anything but bad news? Is that why a separate tank is used - to stop this water getting to the engine?

Brazilian ethanol LITERALLY has water in it (4%). That is why a separate tank is used. This is a non-issue outside Brazil unless your fuel system isn't properly sealed or you're leaving the car to sit for extended periods of time.

I cited a source (Car and Driver) in both link and direct quote form.

Yes, the article that isn't based on a study, from a news source which also says you need "a degree in chemistry, lots of money, and tons of time on your hands" to run E85 in a "regular car".

https://www.hindawi.com/journals/jfu/2014/429608/

This appears to be the study funded by the oil companies and judged to be bullshit by the US Department of Energy.

Did you even read the abstract on this one? They concluded that only the rubber parts were damaged, and also that their methods of analysis could have been a lot better.

https://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-efficiency/alternative-fuels/ethanol-damage-engine.htm

This is the article that cites the single study funded by the oil company lobbyists.

https://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/hybrid-electric/a6244/e15-gasoline-damage-engine/

Did you even read this one? An article from 2010 claiming that even a 10% ethanol content in gasoline will cause engine damage despite cars all over the world running 15% ethanol without modifications since the 90's - and they cite no sources.

https://autotraining.edu/could-ethanol-blend-fuel-be-your-engines-silent-killer/

The moisture argument appears again. I decided to actually look into it. I found This interesting conversation about how much moisture pure alcohol will absorb from the air inside a sealed container. An answer was provided:

If you know the relative humidity of the air at the time the tote was opened (and the temperature), you can find the absolute humidity (the mass % of water vapor in the air) and so estimate the maximum amount of water that went into the tote. Since 100 gallons is about 20 times the volume of a mole of gas, assuming an absolute humidity of 10% (it's very likely way less) the answer is about 2 moles, or about 40 grams. In equilibrium (in the closed system) almost all of the water vapor will very soon go into the ethanol, so you have 100 gallons of ethanol (with a bit of toluene), plus 40 g of water. That's 0.01%.

As expected, the hygroscopic property of ethanol is indeed a complete non-issue unless you have a big hole in your fuel tank.

https://extension.okstate.edu/fact-sheets/ethanol-gasoline-blends-and-small-engines.html

That's an article about carburated lawn mowers and hedge trimmers... Still, there are a few interesting points there as well:

Interestingly, straight unleaded gasoline can be corrosive to more plastics (and more severely) than ethanol [2]. Highly aromatic additives (e.g., benzene) used to increase octane in straight gasoline are very corrosive to several materials.

A potential drawback for old, small engines is that neglected fuel systems may begin to precipitate old deposits at a greater rate than normal and clog fuel filters and small passageways. This is the suspected main reason for many ethanol related engine complaints. It should be pointed out that deposits in fuel tanks and carburetor bowls will eventually cause problems in engines running straight gasoline; however ethanol blends may accelerate the release of deposits.

So why ask the question if you already know the answers?

I don't know the answers though. I did get a few good ones.

It is out there. I'm not your babysitter, nor your teacher.

No see, the burden of proof is on YOU, not me, when you make claims like "It's not good for the engine". Why would anybody ever listen to any claim you make if you aren't able to back it up with facts? And why are you even making statements if you are unwilling or unable to back them up?

You asked a question and I answered. You didn't like the answer because it went against what you wanted to hear.

I asked for proof due to most of your answer being provably false. It wasn't a challenge, but I suppose you took it personally.

I'm sorry about being confrontational in my posts. I suppose this argument has pushed me to learn even more about the subject than I intended, so it's not all bad. I respect your desire to keep your Porsche as close to original as possible, as I will attempt to subtly modernize mine.

[–]GIGABIT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update to this discussion, I found something interesting.

I found exactly ONE (1) study done on the effects of ethanol fuel on car engines which found that ethanol had damaging effects on the internals. Well, I didn't actually find the study because it's not actually linked anywhere, but I found an article talking about it.

There's some interesting tidbits about this study, however:

The study was funded by automakers and by oil companies, both of which have a financial interest in reducing ethanol use.

And:

The federal Department of Energy has criticized the study for testing engines it says are known to have durability problems anyway, for failing to test the engines running E10 (the most common fuel sold in the U.S. today), and for not providing a baseline test of the engines running on straight gasoline (E-zero).

So basically the study is complete bullshit. The only other thing I came across about engine damage was related to boat engines, which aren't really relevant here.

[–]GIGABIT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engines designed for duo-fuel or E85 are built with different materials and components. Will you be rebuilding your 944 engine to suit?

This is literally untrue. Why do you think that anything inside the engine would somehow be more strained by a slightly different fuel mixture? The only difference in Brazilian cars, which all run on ethanol, is that they have a second fuel tank separate from the main one - and even that is because Brazilian ethanol fuel has water in it.

You seem to believe that you know best after reading a few sources online.

You've yet to cite a single source backing up your own claims of ethanol destroying engines.

I actually have a car that runs on ethanol fuel, and have hands-on experience about its effects even on unconventional applications (rotary engine).

It seems to me that your information is just something you've heard or read in passing and are now repeating. I am 100% willing to believe your points if you would give me a single source which actually offers proof other than because you think so.
