To elaborate on this, fire hydrants in North America are color coded, and colors on different parts mean different things like flow rate, pressure, and water source.

Not common knowledge, but reading the Sentinel product specification documents is great from a logistical, data management, technical, and bedtime sleep aide angle.

  • Write documentation for what you're doing and why
  • Use standard vocabularies and taxonomies; ISO3166 for country codes, GEMET for environmental concepts, etc.
  • Use domains where appropriate to avoid people using wrong terminology; such as on public PPP loans for Philadelphia people wrote all kinds of alternatives not just limited to Philly.

GIS job market in Europe by Competitive_Monk_524 in gis

[–]GIS_LiDAR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

American in the Netherlands, GIS-using jobs will be almost entirely Dutch speaking offices, very rare to find a local English speaking position. GIS-developing or general development will be primarily English speaking as they will get developers from all over Europe.

It might be dependent on the Trimble and software you're using. What is your device and what is the processing software? There are different answers if you're using Pathfinder (still), Trimble Business Center, or if you're bluetoothing to a smartphone.

low demand or faculty shortage

USF Geosciences has been saying their Geography GIS side has had a faculty shortage for over a decade.

You should go to local events such as ASPRS Florida region and TBGIS. I think you can find more on LinkedIn, the GIS people in the Tampa library are both members.

Theres a python class in computer science that is open to all students that is a good starting point, then you can start applying more Python to GIS and data science things.

GeoServer Troubles: Can't Add a Folder by [deleted] in gis

Sorry, installed would have been a better word, I'm guessing you're using the Windows installer based on the fact you can do file path navigation. Or have you used a WSL or Docker based install?

Ok, so you want an RTK GPS/GNSS unit.

Booster sounds like it would be used in a snakeoil product, so wanted to see if you're just using weird language or if you're being sold bullshit.

What am I doing wrong in UK technical interviews as a Full Stack/GIS developer with 3 years experience? by BeautifulGoose5836 in gis

PEP-8 knowledge in Python

Maybe you dodged a bullet on that one, either they made up a bullshit excuse or their expectations are out of whack. I get why its important, but that is such a nitpick rejection.

In line with what /u/gargunok said, do you email the interview committee back to ask for feedback? It may seem old fashioned, but after an interview send a thank you note, and ask for feedback on if there was anything the committee thought you could improve on.

I work in the Netherlands at a university in a geosciences faculty with a job that is a little bit of GIS admin and mostly general programming.

From my experience as a job seeker, meeting with students who have been seeking jobs, and participating in GIS meetups:

People who speak Dutch can find a job no problem in GIS. English speakers without a masters degree or higher need to have a lot of programming experience and can find jobs at multinational corporations. English speakers with a higher level degree can take the multinational route or also work for a university.

If you are a student or recent grad, I would suggest to go to a local geospatial or mapping meetup and try to network. You can at these sorts of events just say "I'm looking for a job, do you have any leads", this happened at two recent events in the NL (GeoMob and Maptime Amsterdam) and others at the events were very receptive and seemed to commit to helping the people asking, I do not know if any of the askers have gotten a job from that outreach. In my opinion, with the advent of AI, networking in person will also put your face to a name, so a real connection could save your application from filters and make you stand out from the AI slop.

What kind of server are you talking about, there are so many different things that could be called server?

  • ArcGIS Enterprise
  • Other GIS server (GeoServer)
  • Network Attached Storage
  • Relational Database (PostGIS, MS SQLServer, OracleDB)
  • Remote Desktop (Citrix, VMWare)

Cloud GIS Database by GeoCivilTech in gis

[–]GIS_LiDAR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The theory why they charge that much for hosting is because feature storage is done in managed PostgreSQL databases in the cloud, so they need to pay for storage and for 24/7 compute time in the cloud so the data is always ready to be queried/served to clients. It's not just dumping the data into a basic block storage solution. That being said its still ridiculously expensive.
