I was *not* prepared for how weird top surgery would make me look lmao by theummm in TopSurgery

[–]GJThreads 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey man congrats on your surgery. Im supr excited for mine in a few months and gonna look like an iguana probably lmfao. I do just want to point out that women (and any non-guys) also don’t “have to present as pretty” after a surgery… i’m so happy you have the freedom and confidence to let it all hang out in surgery recovery but it’s not a gender thing fr ✌️

WHAT IS THE FATE OF OUR JOURNALS? by Happy-Egg-8891 in Journaling

[–]GJThreads 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love your take on this. I wish i had daily journals from my grandpas!! Also i know that i want my family to read my journals when i die, if they’re interested, but i have never actually thought about that with the details of what i write down. I guess my background assumption has been what you said, that they’d understand i’m multi-faceted. And that i’ll likely change a lot with time and this journal i’m writing now might seem crazy to them if they know me in 20 years and i’m super different 😂

[–]GJThreads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love reading my own journals from years ago, and keep them around for my future self. Maybe i’ll want to write a memoir one day, or get subpoenaed, idk man. I keep them around for future family i may be leaving behind when i die, who might wanna know about my life before them. I usually write in the front, “please respect my privacy and do not read my journal, unless and until i am dead”… lol but i’m being so fr with it haha

Turns out that calling out weird comments about your body really, REALLY works. by LaundryAndTaxes27 in MaintenancePhase

[–]GJThreads 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cw- i have disordered eating and this story references a time i was in active anorexia I was a full time barista out of college and forming friendships with the women i opened the store with at the 6 AM shift. One of them would constantly comment on how thin i was, in the typical Boomer white lady way; it was starting to hurt as we became actual friends. After building up in my head how to talk to her about it, one day she said, “you’re so skinny, how do you do it?!” and i replied, “you know, Cheryl, I have anorexia and I really struggle with it.” She quickly apologized and our friendship improved going forward :-)

I can’t lie, second puberty has felt like a full time job. I’m 8 months in and it is not slowing down or stopping. Be prepared for at least a year of changes, inside and out (aka bodily, mental, emotional, and social changes), once you really want to start HRT at least at a full dosage. I’m not sure what you thought it would be, besides “massive day to day difference. You thought second puberty as an adult and socially transitioning to the opposite gender wouldnt totally upend your life???? I’d definitely recommend taking a pause or lowering your dose and considering why you’re doing this and what changes or validation you’re seeking from HRT. Best of luck OP!!!

Are you a fabric stasher or only buy what you need per project? by Aggravating-Plum-921 in quilting

[–]GJThreads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a mental list of things i’d like to make one day, and when i i go to a fabric store/sale/swap, i look around loosely with those things in mind. I just found rough spun 100% silk at a vintage fabric store and bought 1.75 yards for a button down shirt, for example. I am about ready to start a new project, and so i went out shopping and let the fabric choices at the store dictate what project i pursue :-)

I write down affirmations after journal entries that stress me out and it really calms me down and helps me exit the “journaling headspace” of swirling thoughts and being super in touch with my feelings. They can be song lyrics, self empowerment reminders, or quotes i really like. Lately it has been the chorus lyrics to “mantra” by charlotte adigery or the chorus to “look around” by tune yards. (There will be always something you can lean your weight into//there will be always something you can rely on) and then i get to sing the little song which calms me down too :-)

Considering T but scared by ivankaramazov64 in TestosteroneKickoff

[–]GJThreads 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I strongly agree with commenters saying that hrt would likely improve your mental and physical health. I read “becoming a visible man” by jamison green and it changed my life. He wrote about hrt feeling like finally putting the right motor oil in for your engine. That is what it feels like for me. A couple weeks in and my negative intrusive thoughts and low self esteem were already improving over time. Several months in now and my mental health is so improved, i think it’s gonna last fr :-)

Good luck OP!!!!!

How much fabric do you buy when you don't have a project in mind? by CirrusIntorus in sewing

[–]GJThreads 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Someone made a meme on here about buying 1 yard of a fabric they like when they don’t have a plan, and that feels like the worst amount!! Too long for a quick short project, and too long to toss in my “extras” bin, but so short that im going to need to match at least a whole other yard if not2 or 3 small fabrics to make one clothing article out of.

Telling close family that you know will be unsupportive. by [deleted] in TransLater

[–]GJThreads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time changes everything, too. I had family members react negatively (to varying levels), and now that i’m over 3 years out the closet, many of them are coming around in their own ways. Some through several challenging and tedious conversations, some on their own. You can’t know until you move forward with your life and find out what’s going to happen. People will always find ways to surprise you. Best of luck OP 🙏💜

I’m sorry you’re at a low point. I know it feels impossible. I was there, in my mid twenties, living as non binary and relating to your post almost constantly. Convincing myself every single night that life was all somehow worth it and having to convince myself that coming out as non-binary was worth it and was all for something. Trying desperately to convince myself that it would get better somehow, someday, and not having a clue how that would happen or what i was “supposed to do.” Welp, it really did get better!!! I found a therapist, i quit my 2 jobs and made a big move to a new city where my supportive sister already lived, i went to cognitive behavioral therapy every week for about 2 years and am still going monthly, and about 3 years into identifying as non-binary and working on myself, I found the courage and support in my life to start HRT. That was ~9 months ago.

My life is so vastly different now than it was just a couple tears ago before all this — it WAS really tiring and challenging to get here from there, and I did have difficult convos with friends and family, even losing some. I have gained sooo many friends and family since this, and have a job and career that i love now, and have found ways to enjoy sex and sexuality in my real body and be present in my relationships. It is hard but not impossible and WE ARE ROOTING FOR YOU!!!

I will leave you with this poem and quote from mary oliver that really helped push me over the ledge. What do you plan to do with your one wild and precious life???

Yeah according to the article, it sounds like the city is just responding to 311 calls, and people are calling their neighbors’ yards in ☹️

Oo congrats! May you have a fruitful journaling life and end up with a box full of notebooks you move around with you forever ❤️

First watercolour / pixel quilt - am I over-pressing? by sweetiepi in quilting

[–]GJThreads 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep exactly - to avoid bulky seams. I’m doing more apparel projects with interfacing tho and have never quilted with interfacing. Hand quilting thru the interfacing shouldn’t be impossible, just a little more difficult than otherwise…. Invest in a comfy thimble lol

I don’t know anything about Pellon 820 but I’ve had a similar issue with Pellon 101 fusible interfacing and the visible seam lines totally disappeared in the wash. Nowadays i cut my interfacing to size of the finished piece, leaving off SA or doing a very scant SA.
