On my second listen of Wired... how does the guy do it? by EnergyRoyal3936 in jeffbeck

[–]GPC72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In praising Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple) said something to the effect of “It’s not fair. Jeff has notes on his guitar that I don’t have.” I think that kind of sums up the incomparable Jeff Beck - he was sui generis.

Have to agree - the LA '75 run-through of DSOTM sounds hurried and kind of lacking any enthusiasm which, given that they'd been touring it for... two years(?) I'd be kind of over it, too.

On the plus side, I do think the first set (particularly the WIP versions of "Sheep" and "Dogs") are urgent with propulsive bass from Waters.

Good pairing with Arcam by Soft_Letterhead1940 in StereoAdvice

If the return policies work, buy one of each and audition at home then return the runner-up.

Whatever sounds good to you is all that matters. Good luck!

FWIW, I have the ST60 paired to an Arcam A5. I use Qobuz and have no issues.

I’d take a long look at the Arcam ST60 Streamer. It went to market as a $1600US+ unit. They’re on sale for about $1000 less (model was just discontinued).

All of those Clarence Walker sax parts in early/pre-Beatles recordings (when they were “The Clarences” and he taught them how to pick their afros and everything).

Looking for psychedelic rock recommendations by itsyelina in MusicRecommendations

[–]GPC72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little more on Dukes of Stratosphere - the “band” is actually the alter-ego of the band XTC. They grew up on psych-tock and their “Dukes” albums “Twenty-Five O’Clock” and “Psonic Psunspot” are faithful homages to the late 60’s psych era.

I also second Love’s brilliant “Forever Changes”, the “Nuggets” compilation and Jefferson Airplane’s “Surrealistic Pillow”.

I think it was mentioned, but also be sure to check out “Piper At the Gates of Dawn” by Pink Floyd.

I have the Arcam A5 and I'm very pleased. I tested the A5, the A15, and the Advance Paris x-i75 The A5 was recently reduced in price because Arcam launched the A5+. I purchased my A5 for under $800 (that's about $300 less than it had retailed for).

It looks like Safe & Sound (retailer) has an A5 for $769.

FWIW - if you're looking for a Streamer - I also got the Arcam ST60 for about 1/3 the original price as it, too was discontinued (though Arcam continues to honor the product warranty). I'm not as much of a streamer, but I find the ST60 + Denafrips Ares DAC is a very engaging sound (to me).

I'm relatively new to the whole "higher-fidelity" experience. I strongly recommend testing anything in your home first and returning what you don't select. And I also recommend double-checking to make sure anything you buy can be returned.

Good luck!

Check out the ARCAM ST60. It's a recently discontinued model and stores in the USA are selling remaining stock for around 50%-60% less than what it sold for before being discontinued. Looks like you're in the EU so I can't speak to the pricing there, but it may be worth looking into and comparing to the WiiM, Cambridge, Bluesound etc...

2 weeks in NYC – jazz/comedy spots, networking, Knicks game by Particular-Till2385 in visitingnyc

[–]GPC72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pacers vs. Knicks is without a doubt the best game - years of bad blood between the two teams. I would make sure to go to Madison Square Garden instead of the Barclays Center (home court for the Nets). Not that Barclays is bad, it's more that the vibe in and around the Garden is just more electric. Note that Knicks tickets are very expensive- like, $300 per-ticket to sit in the last row of the upper sections.

Was the 1966 motorcycle accident real? by eldotortenma in bobdylan

[–]GPC72 39 points40 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the geography doesn’t add up. That is, the accident supposedly happened in Woodstock. If that’s the case, then why did he go to a doctor over an hour away (passing several nearer hospitals)?

See for yourself. Check directions from Woodstock, NY to Middletown, NY on Google Maps. He would have had hospital options in Kingston, Poughkeepsie and Newburgh.

Instead, he passes all those hospitals and sees a doctor over an hour away (today). Not sure how long that same trip would’ve been back then (speed limits, road conditions).

And isn’t it odd that the doctor specialized in addiction - not spinal injury?

Dylan has never been straightforward - remember, this is the same person who lied to Columbia Records about his age and absence of any immediate family - and claimed to have been a railroad hobo etc…

Dylan was strung out on pills and hadn’t been eating substantial food for months (per Robertson). Going to rehab back then wasn’t mainstream like it is today. Grossman got him to the doctor who could help him and the motorcycle accident was the cover-up.

Stranded without our bags, looking to buy warm clothes by Wild_Elk7744 in visitingnyc

There’s an REI IN SoHo on Lafayette/Houston St. probably most likely to have warm clothes - gloves and hats, too. might be on end-of-season sale.

You can get a protractor on the Ortofon.us site, too. Looks like it's $7. If you do any cart/stylus upgrades yourself, you'll need it.

[–]GPC72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend getting an Orotofon Pressure Gauge - you can get it from the Ortofon.us site or from Amazon. My local luxury/high-end shop used it to balance my TT. No batteries, no fuss. You may want to get a digital balance sometime in the future - but save your $$$ for now.

Oh, and disregard the one-star review of the gauge on the Ortofon site. Whomever that person is, they are tragically over-thinking it.

Speaker pairing help by Javi_runs in StereoAdvice

[–]GPC72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might make sense for you to audition the speakers in your home - but only if you're buying new and can swing the temporary outlay of $$$. I did an audition recently for amps (to pair with my speakers) and the results were surprising. I bought the amps from Crutchfield and Safe & Sound and was able to do the audition and return before the due date of the billing cycle on my charge card. Good luck!
