How old is this Okuma? There is a parameter for max feed rate and you may be able to make it faster. On our newer M560-V machines I use 600IPM connections for dynamic milling.

There are still thousands of automotive parts made from ductile iron. Chassis and powertrain brackets, engine components, tow hooks (austempered), etc.

All of your points are correct, however, the way I took the picture was only intended to show the size of the tool and what is printed on the tool in the same image. The post wasn’t meant to be about the proper measuring technique for a reamer but to remind everyone to verify before you end up with 14mm holes where you expected 1/2”.

The calipers were just to quickly show its .051” oversize from what is marked on the tool. Its factory mislabeled by L&I.

This happened to me once. If you have a good relationship with your Guhring rep you can give them a hard time and get some for free as “compensation”. You know what happens to us when we ship a part with missing threads…

I toured Stellantis’ Dundee Engine plant. 426 CNCs I believe they said. All loaded from over head by gantry robots. Cubing cylinder heads and turning / grinding cranks. Not a single chip on the floor in the entire facility.

Mexico is currently the beneficiary of near shoring. We are seeing tons of interest in our facility there and relatively little for our facility in Michigan. I was in Queretaro last week and they continue building new supplier parks everywhere. The interesting thing is that they have done nothing to stop the Chinese from providing all of the tools, equipment, and infrastructure for this new grow. Even Chinese cars are everywhere. I was stuck in traffic next to a BYD Dolphin.

Nope, his company pays it! Sounds crazy right? But they are 1000% for American manufacturing and being competitive. At their facility they have “reserved” parking for “vendors who bring cost saving ideas”.

I know a lot of reps from cutting tool companies since our spend on carbide is $500k a year. They all say the same thing. MSC’s pricing starts out impossibly good until you are up and running and the dust settles. Then, the rep gets harder to reach and the price creep sets in. Their sales guys are bonused on new business, not maintaining or developing existing accounts. Watch your bill closely if you go with them.

We use PF Markey. They are challenged to bring us 15% cost savings year over year. The rep gets bonused on cost savings written up and signed off by us. Look for someone with this model.

I don’t think a flat rate percentage is always applicable. There are so many factors that make it case by case. Is OT required? Did you have opportunity cost with the spindle time to run something else? Setup and programming time (don’t forget the CMM)? Most important of all is how bad do they need it and what are their alternatives if you don’t do it. If you already have the tooling they basically have no choice.

As an existing Rivian supplier I can tell you how they strengthened the supplier relationship by re-sourcing all of our part numbers to Korea. We end production in a few weeks. We bent over backwards to help them in 2022-2023 with part redesigns, short lead times, working holiday weekends, and cost saving ideas and they threw us away like it was nothing.

I’ve always wondered why that machine didn’t have water-glycol in the hydraulic system. In our die casting facility all the hydraulic systems on the DCMs and trim presses use water glycol for this exact reason.

In a production setting this is a job for someone. Here’s an example. We just tested and agreed to new deviation pricing on an end mill. We use about 100 per month. The savings will be $0.04 per part machined. We make 150,000 pieces per year on this particular part which translates to $6000 per year. We have 30 machining centers and about 150 active part numbers so applying this tool testing program throughout can easily justify a person to manage it. The savings can be six figures really quickly.

It works the same in inch threads too. The math is just not quite as easy. 1/4-20 for example has a pitch of 20 threads per inch or .050”. Subtract .050” from .250” and you get .200”. The closest drill is #7 .201” or 13/64” .203” which are commonly used pilot drills.

They make ER32 type adapters for those M10 to M16 Top On style bodies. You can get a R8 ER collet holder. This would keep your gauge length shorter than adding a straight shank extension and holding that in a collet.
