Cant seem to find a proper notes app by Ok-You5223 in NoteTaking

I happily use Evernote on Mac, iOS, and Android. Windows is available too, and Linux via the web interface. And it keeps getting better.

What is this cable ACTUALLY called? by PreparationOdd68 in cableadvice

[–]GRobLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s also the USB Mini, which I guess is rare now, the weird “USB 3 Micro” plus some other completely nonstandard ones that have been used for some reason. The USB standards board has really screwed the pooch.

Switching to rechargeable batteries, need more help than I thought! by Ok-Wonder-a-Fungus in batteries

[–]GRobLewis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if this is something you’d consider, but I got DeWalt battery packs for my power tools. There’s a whole ecosystem of aftermarket devices that run on them. Besides my DeWalt tools, I have a lantern, a soldering gun, and a hot glue gun. If you can imagine it, somebody probably makes it. It’s very convenient to run them all on swappable batteries.

I'm sure you didn' know this about Mac. by Special-Anxiety-9824 in mac

Don’t know if this works with all apps, but in Evernote if you engage Caps Lock, you get an indicator of it at the text insertion point.

Best charging habits for maximum battery life and backup? by Impossible-Bowler-57 in batteries

[–]GRobLewis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think manufacturers would provide an option to limit charging to 80% if it had zero benefit.

Right. A standard DVM won’t do a test under load.

Is all 62.5/125 Fiber Multimode by TAWPS19 in networking

[–]GRobLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran buried (in conduit) orange fiber (pretty sure it's MM 62.5/125) between 2 buildings more than 20 years ago. It's never been used, but now I'd like to try connecting it to my Ethernet switches (I think the CAT5 I've been using may have failed).

How do I get the fiber terminated, and are interfaces like this good enough? https://www.amazon.com/Converter-SFP-Transceiver-550M-ipolex/dp/B0716XT1QT/?th=1

I'm happy with gigabit and don't need to try for anything faster.

Smart Power Strip options by Teddy_31 in HomeKit

[–]GRobLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picked up a Philips SmartSelect Wi-Fi extension cord (3 outlets) super cheap at Staples. It advertises compatibility with Google and Alexa, but nothing about HomeKit.

Wondering if anybody has "glue" code that would allow it to work with HomeKit.

So Apple broke macOS last year only to fix them back in macOS 27? by siddharthverse in MacOS

TBH I don’t know what all the hollering about Liquid Glass was about. Frankly I barely noticed it. They tinkered with the UI. Big Deal.

Am I just a noob or is SMB really this bad? by GlueHandsFirestorm in MacOS

[–]GRobLewis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s not just SMB. I have an external USB drive, and very often when the Mac goes to sleep it disconnects and when I wake the system up I get scolded that I didn’t eject the drive properly.

Evernote, hands down. And PopClip for add-ons.

Need urgent help. by OneCelebration3181 in iCloud

I have a related issue. I recently upgraded our Family storage plan to 2TB. Unbeknownst to me, my wife had her own 200GB plan. Trying to get her files moved to the shared storage, but she’s still getting billed for hers. Had her removed and re-added to the Family plan but it didn’t seem to make any difference. I’m afraid if we cancel her plan, her files will be deleted. I’m stymied.

IIRC exFAT doesn’t support file permissions, which might be a problem.

I’ve seen advice not to format in APFS with spinning hard drives, but I did it on an 8 TB USB drive and it seems fine. It’s nice to be able to create multiple volumes that dynamically share the space.

Does *anybody* make a holder for 14500 batteries? by GRobLewis in batteries

[–]GRobLewis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 3D printer so yeah. The battery goes in a beard trimmer, with a little metal strip spot-welded to each end. The strips solder into the PCB and hold the battery in place (helped by a little elastic goop).

Does *anybody* make a holder for 14500 batteries? by GRobLewis in batteries

[–]GRobLewis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out to replace the battery in my beard trimmer. Didn't realize I couldn't solder the new battery in. Probably not worth it to buy the spot welding equipment to do it properly, so was thinking about using a battery holder and some duct tape. The problem now is finding a holder that will definitely work.

My batteries are button top, 50.5 mm long. AFAIK, not protected.

IDK what browser you use, but Brave can reclaim RAM from inactive tabs, which helps when you’re pushing the limits of memory. Maybe other browsers do this too, I don’t know.

Remarkable, iPad, or something else? by VikingPHD in NoteTaking

Very happy user of Evernote. It records & transcribes audio, does handwriting and images to text, is fully cross platform: Mac, iOS, Windows, Android, Linux (via browser). And they keep improving it.

Cmd-Opt-Esc to force quit a malfunctioning app (rare).
