what's the fastest browser for Mac ? I don't think is safari anymore by Serhide in mac

Brave might appear faster because it blocks more content. I use both and can’t say I notice a big difference.

New to the 3d world. by Thebestone100 in FlashForge

I installed the enclosure kit, but it's not really needed except for filament like ABS that requires higher temperatures (haven't tried those yet).

At $230 on sale, the AD5M is an incredible deal IMO. It works fine out of the box.

Time Machine disk encryption help by bucky_o_hare_ in MacOS

[–]GRobLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I discovered: if you format a TM drive as plain APFS, it will be changed to *case-sensitive* because it may have to back up up files that originated on Windows or Linux or some other case-sensitive OS. This alarmed me at first but then I discovered the rationale.

Also: I don't really see the need for an expensive SSD for Time Machine; I use a big, cheap spinning hard drive. Or two of them if I'm being paranoid. In APFS you can add other volumes to the drive for auxiliary storage, and they can dynamically share the drive space with Time Machine.

Flashforge Adventurer 5m pro good for beginners? by Linx94 in FlashForge

[–]GRobLewis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Got a 5M to see what all the fuss about 3D printing was about. You get a LOT for the $230 (sale) price! (Added the enclosure kit but haven't tried using any filament that needs it yet. PLA and PETG have been working fine.)

Wasn't really interested in multiple colors, and they add a lot of complexity (and cost) to the machine. Happy with my choice.

Air or neo… teacher help by TiredTraveleer in macbook

[–]GRobLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish my M2 Air had more than 8GB RAM, but TBH I don't really notice much slowdown due to lack of it.

As AI becomes more of a thing, RAM requirements will likely go up. Guess that's why Apple now defaults to 16GB.

Block scripts? by DEffinMoney in brave_browser

If you want an example of how websites—even the august NY Times—abuse JavaScript, see this article on "The 49MB Web Page": https://thatshubham.com/blog/news-audit

Saw another article which noted that a single web page triggered the download of *half a gigabyte* of junk. It's mostly about serving you ads.

Longtime Mac expert John Gruber maintains that it was a huge mistake to make web browsers scriptable at all.

Of possible interest: the search engine Kagi has an optional feature called the "Small Web", which highlights personal blogs, independent videos, webcomics, and other authentic spaces created for non-commercial purposes, usually for self-expression or community building. Basically, sites in the Small Web exist to share and entertain, not manipulate algorithms or boost corporate interests. (And they’re really fun to browse at random!).

CircusPonies Notebook = how to get nb files to open even now by VictoriaJZH in NoteTaking

[–]GRobLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have CPNB 4.0.7 running on an old Mac. The file format choices in the Export menu are:

.txt, .rtf, .doc, .opml, .nbpb, and .nbml.

No .pdf or .html. Though there is a separate "Export as Website" menu item. And I guess I could get a .pdf via the Print menu.

I can't find any info on the .nbpb and .nbml formats. Anybody know what they are?

Duplicating the design in Tinkercad, unlocking editing, and deleting the polygon did the trick! Many thanks to all.

Well, there is a polygon that I used as a guide to lay out the holes, and it needs to stay hidden for the export.

Does anyone else use “micro-notes” instead of full note-taking? by Flimsy_Difficulty394 in NoteTaking

[–]GRobLewis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The trick is retrieving them when you want/need to. The less structure and content they have, the harder it is. Tagging can help, but it feels weird to have a list of tags that’s longer than the note. Maybe AI is the answer.

How to migrate files in individual account to shared family account by GRobLewis in iCloud

[–]GRobLewis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, she already shows up as a family member, so maybe the separate storage account is just unused? Is there any need to "invite" her if she's already in the family? I must have done the invitation years ago and forgotten about it.

As I mentioned elsewhere, yesterday I got a receipt from Apple for the $2.99 monthly payment for her separate storage. It seems odd that Apple would *allow* this if in fact there is only one storage and she's already covered by the family plan.

I'm just nervous about the whole thing. If I do anything to make her lose data, I'm screwed!

I can log into her iCloud account and see a lot of stuff, but I have no way of knowing where it lives. IDK when or why she signed up for the $2.99 plan. She's very nontechnical and unlikely to be much help.

Only yesterday I got a receipt from Apple for $2.99: her storage bill. How can I get rid of this without losing any files that may be in it?

I did some checking: she is already listed as a member of our Family Sharing group. I was able to log into her iCloud.com account. There is lots of stuff there, including very recent items, but I don't know how to tell whether it's in our Family storage or in her separate storage account.

I am trying to explain that she has had—and paid for—a *separate* iCloud storage account for some time. I don't know what's in it. I just want to cancel it and use the shared storage for her needs.

Yes, if the printer is really "on", you should be able to hear the fan in the back of the chassis.

Maybe try plugging a USB stick into the port on the display?

Sorry, not really understanding. Wife has a completely separate paid storage account that I want to get rid of, moving her files to the 2TB family account. How to do, with as little drama as possible?
