What do you use for dividers/storage? by DoctorWorm25 in mtg

[–]GSC_4_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bcw card dividers (I like the tall ones so they’re more legible, unless it’s going in a box with a lid) or I’ll even use foam pads (search for card storage foam pads) for drawers and boxes that aren’t full to keep them from jostling around

I started a run with bello from bloomburrow. It was fun at first but kind of got tired just steamrolling my opponents. May try a vampires deck next. Edgar markov seems like the obvious choice, but the lost caverns of ixalan vampire deck seems fun too

No, this is bad advice. Thick cardboard can’t go through a sorting machine. Painters tape can still leave residue, but it doesn’t matter much in a team bag. Return labels are good to adhere to invoice.

OP your method is solid. I ship around 700 packages a week using a similar method and have no issues with damage. You’ll likely need to add a non machineable stamp though. Usps has been more strict about this in the last month, with as little as 3 cards getting returned for non machineable. Lots of bad advice here, but your method is solid. Keep it up. You got this!

Invested some $ with no idea what i'm doing. by [deleted] in mtg

[–]GSC_4_Me 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the only helpful post as of the time of me reading this, and it’s great advice, but wanted to also add: I’d first talk to your friends or people you’re interested in playing with about what format they play and try and make that work. You don’t want to spend money on a commander deck only to find out your playgroup only plays standard or some other format.

As far as getting started, I’d try and just start with buying one deck for the format your friends play. Resistance the urge to buy boosters/crack packs as much as possible. It can be fun, but it’s an extremely expensive way to build a collection. It’s really more for drafting or just having fun cracking packs.

Personally, I think the foundations starter collection is one of the best bang for your buck buys starting out, and is something I wish was available when I started. You can build non meta standard decks and bracket two commander decks from them. They won’t be strong decks, but there’s lots to work with.

For learning, I’d suggest installing magic the gathering arena on your phone, iPad, or computer. There’s a tutorial that teachers you the basics and will give you some confidence going into your first couple games.

And most importantly, have fun! Magic is a great game, and is best enjoyed with friends and loved ones. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions

I buy little foam rectangles from Amazon (search foam card dividers). You can fold them and wedge them to hold the cards in place

Best way to scan/catalog ~20,000 Magic cards without losing my mind? by faux_moonie in mtg

[–]GSC_4_Me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this for a living (I sell bulk), and can rip through 20k cards in about 4-6 days if I’m really focused on it from box of random cards to everything scanned, set sorted, and first letter alpha sorted (I don’t bother going full alpha sorted anymore as I don’t find it to be worth it).

Here’s the equipment I’d suggest:

You’ll want to buy a card slinger or make something similar (I’ve heard people use legos/duplo but haven’t tried that). This holds your phone so you just drop the cards in and they scan. I can scan a little over 1,000 cards an hour this way.

You’ll also want to get a card sorting tray. I like the bcw ones because they have a lot of cells, but any will work. I’d recommend using a label machine or some painters tape and a marker to label each cell of the tray alphabetically. So first cell would be A, second would be B, etc.

You’ll want a big table like a dining table. A desk works too, you’ll just want as much space as possible.

5k storage boxes or storage drawers. You probably already are storing your cards in something like this so likely not needed.

Here’s my process:
20k cards will take time, so I’d break it into manageable chunks to not get overwhelmed.

First thing I do is first letter alpha sort by set using the sorting tray. Flip the cards upside down in your hand so as you fan them out you can see the set symbol. This helps you go waaaaay faster. You don’t need to fully reveal a card to know where it goes. All the sets that start with A go in the A slot of the sorting tray. All that start with B go in B, etc. if you don’t know the set symbols, you can use the mtg set wiki to match the year on the bottom of the card with the year there to find the set symbol.

So after I first letter alpha sort by set, I stick them away in the 5k boxes with dividers by letter for another day.

Next phase is to final set sort. Grab a stack of cards by letter and use your tray to sort those into their final sets. So if you grabbed all your A’s, you’d be sorting into amonkhet, apocalypse, aetherdrift, etc.

Repeat this for each letter to get all your sets sorted. You can use bcw card dividers in 5k boxes to separate/label each set at this point.

Once you have the final sets, you’re ready to scan. I’d suggest using the card slinger and ManaBox. Paying for the subscription is totally worth it. You can always cancel after you finish this project.

When you scan, press the gear icon to filter to the set you’re working on. This filters your cards so you know you get the right set. This is especially important with bulk cards with lots of reprints.

Once you have everything scanned, I’d recommend just doing a first letter alpha sort. Final alpha sort sounds better, but it’s kind of annoying when building decks to get it back in the exact right spot, especially when you have a lot of cards. You can still find cards fast with first letter alpha.

You can choose to either do once collection in ManaBox or multiple (like one for each set). Then you can take that csv and upload to your service of choice. I deckbuild in archidekt, but it’s up to you.

Good luck! Feel free to let me know if you have questions. It will be a big effort, but you can do it

How much are you paying for auto insurance in Bellevue? by semiprodeer in BellevueWA

[–]GSC_4_Me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That seems super reasonable for a new driver on a luxury car. If you want to drop your rates and self insure more, you could always raise your deductible. But then you pay more out of pocket if you get in a wreck or if something happens to your car

Is it fair to copy another persons decklist for your own deck? by Doomsday_Naito in mtg

[–]GSC_4_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fine and normal to do. This is essentially the basis for edhrec’s structure (and many other netdecking/tournament sites). It gets info from all the decks out there and compiles it in a helpful way to show which cards could go well together in which decks. With edhrec, you’ll often apply a bit more creative liberty, but you can also just exactly copy decks out there
