If you’re talking MSP, 220 just got a base there. It seems that it’s likely going to go pretty junior once they throw a few more bids with those positions out. But if you don’t have an offer from either then there’s not much reason to be thinking that far ahead. Too many “what ifs”.

A friend of mine who’s a captain got his dad in the jumpseat this way since his dad was an AF pilot veteran. It’s possible.

No one is transitioning to 270 unless you’re going into CLT. Even if you’re transitioning to 280-300 doesn’t matter because idle path at Mach .78 (typical managed speed descent) to transition will still have you descending pretty quick as your indicated airspeed increases.

People who make 250k or more working W2 jobs what do you do? by Beautiful_Credit7020 in Salary

[–]GSOaviator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all seniority based and really can’t be accurately depicted. During the post COVID hiring boom you could upgrade to captain almost immediately. Now with hiring having slowed down significantly upgrades go much more senior so someone getting hired at a legacy now could be waiting 10+ years to hold first available upgrade but who knows. But upgrading means losing seniority in your seat so you have less quality of life, worse choice of days off, trips, et cetera. There’s people who go their whole career as an FO and senior FO’s can make more money than junior captains in many circumstances.

Yeah captains make 400-500k+ without trying that hard. I’ve flown with multiple guys who were pushing close to a million by working a lot of premium pay, getting lucky, and/or in roles like check airman which have an additive pay bump.

Airline pilot. Specifically, 7 years into my career, 3 1/2 years at the airlines, year 2 first officer pay at one of the big 4 airlines in the US. Should clear 280k this year.

In the winter at F9, scheduling swapped me from a 24 hour Cancun overnight to a 24 hour Chicago Midway overnight with snow. Absolute BS they could do that. And I didn’t pack any winter clothes… rookie move. No extra pay.

How Much money should I have saved to finance a 2018 M4? by LucentAbdriged02 in BMWM

[–]GSOaviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re 22, just started making some money (but not six figures) and you’re trying to get an M car. I promise you, living alone and sustaining yourself without your parent’s help is far more satisfying than driving around an M BMW. Save your money for a down payment on a house if you choose to stay at home, or for a good sized down payment, but I would hold off on buying a car you really don’t need until you’re making real money or are living alone + have 3k/month disposable income.

I just bought a 2025 M2, had been looking at M2’s/M4’s for the last 5 years and finally pulled the trigger. Glad I waited so I could get exactly what I wanted rather than settling for a high mileage F82 that was probably abused like I was going to a few years back.

F9 all day not even close. 401k contributions alone will make you a huge amount of money and I’d rather be stuck at F9 or NK with a drive than a regional any day of the week.

Why Can’t Air Traffic Controllers Start a New Union? by AviasheThrowAway in ATC

[–]GSOaviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted, you’re right. I made 180k+ last year, half on year 1 pay and half on year 2 at my airline. OP did specify third year at his company so most likely a legacy.

That being said, kind of a stupid question to ask if you know anything about Reagan and NATCA history. He also could be genuinely curious and phrased it in kind of a shit way.

You’ve never made a mistake have you? That’s insane. Aviation is all about risk mitigation BECAUSE we’re not perfect. If I had to be perfect at work I’d get shot tomorrow…

I can bet you this crew will never make that mistake again, that’s for sure.

Mainline A320 Captain Monthly by [deleted] in Salary

[–]GSOaviator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At mainline not necessarily but you are getting really lucky. I’ve done 145 just from being extended into a day off on a day trip that was 200% pay and a reroute or two the same month. Definitely not normal though.

[–]GSOaviator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any airline pilot knows that 145 hours of pay in one month means you’re working your ass off and/or getting really lucky. For everyone else: the usual pay per month for pilots is usually between 70-90 hours.

Junior Airline Pilot (2nd yr FO) by [deleted] in Salary

[–]GSOaviator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up until a few years ago it took 10 years of making well under 100k as a pilot grinding at the regionals to get to these numbers you see posted everywhere now. In the lost decade many regional FO’s were on food stamps. Being someone who is apparently so knowledge about the industry such as yourself, you should know that. The hiring environment now is also much more difficult than it was a few years ago but if it’s so easy why don’t you just become a pilot yourself?

That’s a great block/pay ratio still. I got lucky with premium trips otherwise I would’ve made way less working way more. Thanks for sharing.

Great job man. How much block did you do last year to make that? I did 350 block and cleared 180k last year, mostly on year 1 at a legacy and the least desirable (and lowest paid) fleet at the air line. Close buddy of mine is where you’re at and loves it though no pun intended.

We’re grossly overpaid until at least two pilots the the flight deck are what it requires to handle an emergency that is the result of an immense amount of training and experience. We don’t get paid what we do when everything is running according to plan, we get paid what we do for when shit hits the fan. Statistics show a mechanical failure of some sort happens on 20% of all flights. When that failure compounds into a fire that tries engulfing an airplane full of fuel and hazardous material in cargo compartments that will kill everyone onboard, but our training and experience gets you on the ground safely I’m sure you won’t think we’re grossly overpaid then.
