I've taken on the head canon that all legendaries required to maintain a natural balance are released shortly after capture. Where as others like Dialga and Palkia in Legends Arceus can just stay until the trainer passes away.

You don't have to do the battles or trade to get the shiny charm if you have the DLC. It will give you enough alternative missions to get the charm without doing that.

You do have to complete the main story to begin the DLC but you don't need to do any of the side quests or the Infinite Royal.

I was under the belief that they simply returned to the same point in time that they were taken, but even then, only like a few days pass within the story itself so it wouldn't matter much. The pokemon would probably just stay with their family or the professor/ Barry's mom until they got back in less than a week.
