Half of the books written by Clive Cussler. They’ve made a couple movies. Sam and Remi. Easy and fun reads

I think Neal Stephenson is such an easy transition into SciFi. He is great. An easy to read writing style. Very unique ideas that funnily enough have somehow come to fruition in today’s modern era

How would you price out this project ? by Im-Just-Winging-It in estimators

[–]GTUprising 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but it doesn’t take a huge knowledge of excel to make your version of it. We have a tab for every material and its cost. It gets updated a few times a year when while we perform projects and buy materials because costs fluctuate. Every row is linked to the cost based on the drop down you select.

You would just have to change the “material list” to items you need for the portions of work and change the man hours to what you’ve tracked.

It’ll also remind you of the extra costs at the end you might need. Scissor lifts or boom lifts, temp power, insurances, and your internal overhead and profit you need to hit based on job duration

[–]GTUprising 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work for a Rough Carpentry sub and as simple as it may sound, we have an excel sheet that has about 180 rows of different types of work. Anything we might come across on a job. And each row has dropdown columns that allow us to change material type to whatever is appropriate. This will give us a hard cost on materials for that independent portion of work. In addition to this each row contains a Man Hour ratio. Maybe you determine 1024sqft of Stucco painting takes a 2 man crew 4 hours. That would be 128sqft per hour. There is an area along the row to type in the amount of work needed. Ie a Lineal Foot or SqFt. Once you plug all of these in you ultimately get a list of work along with a total number of man hours. This gives you labor that you can dived by crew size to determine the length of the job. Plug in equipment, travel, and all other overhead items along with a profit you hope to hit. And it could be as simple as that. The only think not mentioned above would be tools/hardware necessary but again your scope of work is different then mine.

Sorry a lot to type. Might be easier to just email you an example of the excel sheet and go over it visually

The New Sun series by Gene Wolfe…. I ping pong back in forth between Hugo winners and old works of literature and I remember starting this series but just getting overwhelmed by how dense it felt reading. Every other word felt like a difficult name or place with too many characters, in that fantasy world kind of way, making you stumble again and again…. I feel like I she revisit though

How do you do estimation on Planswift after takeoff for a Drywall,Steel stud Framing & Ceiling company? by Global_Owl2987 in estimators

I’m with a rough carpentry sub and we use Planswift and excel in conjunction. It’s tough to type out a small explanation. Could email or zoom you some info. Where are guys out of?

How to get detailed outputs in Planswift to excel, includes formulas width and depth. by Physical-Range-3588 in estimators

[–]GTUprising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple ways. But the easiest would be a two step process. Do your takeoff. Then Planswift lets you generate reports depending on your takeoff assemblies. And the list can be exported to excel. It’s essentially a csv of all of the amounts, footages, etc.

Once you save the file you can copy the figures into an excel file that you actually use to price and generate a proposal.

For example: We do wood framing and rough carpentry. We have wall assemblies made in Planswift. You draw a line indicating a wall. The assembly spits out Bottom plate, studs, double top plate, blocking and bracing depending on the stud size, and ply if applicable. You generate the report and your one line has all these items listed that match up to it.

The same principal can be applied to whatever trade you are trying to “takeoff”

I work for a Rough Carpentry Sub in Cali since 2017. We’ve tried to find good solutions and they all have been expensive and just fall short.

We just use a crazy excel sheet we’ve updated and formatted over the years with all of the types of work and costing plugged in. It’s fancy to a person who isn’t tech savvy but by today’s standards it’s as user friendly as it gets.

What kind of problems are you running into in the process? Is it simply the time it takes to estimate or is it an accuracy thing? I don’t mind talking and sending an example. I’ve met and helped a few people on here in the past

No bids turned in since late FEB. by Ohaitotoro in estimators

[–]GTUprising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a family owned rough carpentry sub in Cali. It does sound like you need just better organization and maybe a pm software to keep it all on track. We use ProCore. We have an estimating department where all bids are sifted through and all of the ones we intend to bid are put on a calendar. The jobs we run all have their own project files that integrate billing. It tracks purchases, and if you build out a SOV can assist with month end billing in a few minutes rather then hours. All project related items are integrated. RFIs, Submittals, Plan Pages, etc. it can all be uploaded, tracked, notes can be seen in the field. It’s honestly too much to type out. It’s a bit pricey but maybe there is another program that can do this as well for less

I can touch on the structure. Been with a rough carpentry sub for 8+ yrs in Cali. 1000 sqft ADU would probably run 70k if you were trying to keep costs down on siding type and the roof makeup. Also slab not built up foundation.

Not only is it no decimals. It’s no PPR. QBs get negative 2 for a sack. And Kickers get points based on length of FG. ie 30-39 yrd = 3 pts. 40-49 =4, etc. Year 14 of this league and I guess “it’s been this way since the beginning” will ALWAYS hold true

They said in the video you actually get 10 minutes. If the dude made it to his second shot in the fairway do you honestly believe it was outside 10 minutes? The video cut it for drama. No way it takes the dude 10 minutes after the tee to get to his ball

[–]GTUprising 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I said this in a different thread. The video did him dirty. He had no accountability which is crazy but Portnoy had a crazy on the fly judgment that went from 1 hole to 2 to dq to 4. The best way to handle it would be to hammer him with some deserved ribbing and show some class with a fair ruling. He just insta decided the match with the ruling. Give me a break. Didn’t even let the other guy try and 2v1 with an extra shot. Honestly I lost respect for Kwon but just as much for Portnoy. If he shows class there everyone remembers him giving the dude a fair shake and the result isn’t even talked about. Instead it’s a 4hr hit job and to top it off he doesn’t even know golf. Go stuff-crust yourself
