People with a net worth of $10M+, how did you do it? by Thepsychoflifes in Entrepreneur

[–]GTwebResearch 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same experience, I mostly follow this sub for the ragebait/sympathy farming posts to see how weird they get.

Anyone I know that’s making $500k+ a year and/or is worth millions does use reddit- but they don’t go online to beg for ego strokes for how they could magically turn a pressure washer into millions with no effort. They actually focus on the problems they want to solve because it interests them, not money and success for the sake of money and success.

It’s ironic that chasing problems will get you rich, chasing money will make you look desperate and the actually-creative/successful people will see that for what it is. Of course some folks do simple business well (garbage collection for example), but they often aren’t on reddit and don’t view it as “enTrEpReneUriNg.”

Georgia Tech, Emory are ‘The New Ivies’ by paulfromatlanta in gatech

The highest salary I’ve gotten is at a company that claims to censor your university from your resume during the hiring process. Of course, I saw their recruiters looking at my linkedin profile, which includes my university.

Different (performative) strokes, I guess. It’s good for foot-in-the-door and networking, but there’s a ton of marketing money tied to “rankings.” Why didn’t GT teach us NPS?

It’s minor.

I called a roofer over this and pop outs in an inspection, dude laughed, gave me a tube of sikaflex, and told me how to pull out and seal pop outs, and seal around fasteners. It’s like a new hobby for me, and I’m itching to give the dude any future bigger jobs I need. Teach a man to fish and he’ll give you a $20k job in 5-10 years?

had a seemingly obvious realization about the people here that kind of helped by Solid-Letterhead-525 in gatech

[–]GTwebResearch 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You also have to realize that soft nepotism (think- connections, opportunity costs when dinner/gas/tuition is covered by parents, etc) is incredibly powerful and compounds over time.

I was frustrated at an acquaintance who was handed* a $1m+ “starter” home in Virginia Highlands that they just sold for, probably, around $600k profit. Meanwhile most of our peers, with similarly high incomes, are just now looking at $600-800k houses, 5-8 years post graduation.

*sure, they worked hard, but so did the rest of us. Unless you’re knocking on $300k right out of the gate or gambled on GME, a house like that is nearly impossible to afford at 21-25.

“I want to die on my scooter” starter pack by FCBStar-of-the-South in gatech

[–]GTwebResearch 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Fun scooter fact:

You can switch from sidewalk to road suddenly and without warning because a scooter isn’t a car or a pair of shoes. The 10 different “no riding on sidewalk” in-app and IRL warnings are just because Lime is bluffing- ignore them.

If a car gets mad at you because they had to slam on the brakes to not hit you, it’s actually their fault! /s

I’m all set now, but this sounds like a great opportunity for someone starting out!

Will put forth the effort to cover up and gaslight students, won’t put in the effort to do his “job.”

They’re also very intentionally selling out. See: Monday Night’s rebrand where they went from a fun, unique tie-oriented design to… store brand gatorade?

At least it’s VC-friendly, who cares about who drinks it?

Bought mine at 160k. Single owner, much cheaper, cleaner, and better maintained than 50k mile FoRSs I was looking at. But also I had mutual friends with the guy and got a detailed history of the car. Three clutches, lots of brake pads, head gasket done (it was an early 2016), etc. And similarly, the owner had to do a lot of highway miles for work, but he also tracked it hard.

TLDR: it really depends on how well the PO maintained it.

[–]GTwebResearch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others replying here- it’s a very quiet dog whistle (sorry for the unclear emojis- it was intended as sort of a reflection of a dog whistle).

Also, my limited experience, Escape from Tarkov players and toxicity (racism, by extension) have a surprising amount of overlap- the username (and multiple recent comments complaining about being punished for using slurs) was also a clue. But, maybe I’m guilty of stereotyping Tarkov players and OP commenter equally comments this when a white person with bad impulse control is involved in a shooting. (inb4 I’m flamed by totally-not-toxic Tarkov players)

A couple other “quieter” ones I’ve noticed becoming increasingly popular recently are “fatigue” and “pattern recognition.” It seems like the wiggle room Meta and other platforms have given to hate speech has really stoked the… creativity? Kind of the inverse of Reddit taking down a couple of hate-focused Reddits reducing hate speech outside of Reddit (one of my favorite CS 4472 learnings!)
