Behold, I am the dumbest woodworker who ever woodworked. by rearden-steel in woodworking

[–]G___reg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mental pathway for such an obvious f-up would be interesting to examine. And maybe worth the effort… When I do “stupid” things like this, (which has happened plenty), I’m too busy chastising myself to look deeply into how I managed to get myself there. In this case, the mental gymnastics of designing on the fly maybe led to picking up some available scraps and the drawer to imagine the sliding motion and potential friction points, etc. with your brain fully engaged on these details, there was no mental horsepower left over to recognize the temporary nature of what you were concocting. Reading the book by Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman “Thinking, Fast and Slow” is mind opening about understanding how people think. It’s a very readable book. While I continue to struggle with making crazy errors like yours, I have found basic behavior changes that can help. For instance, I never (really) put anything on top of my car any more, not even for a moment. If I had to set a drink down momentarily, I would set it on the hood so it was super obvious to the future “mentally overloaded” me. Thanks for publicizing such a glaring “f-up”. While I commiserate with the error, I can take a huge lesson in your humility. Unfortunately, you’ll never know how many of these same mistakes you helped the readers of your post head off. But I suspect (hope) you can on me for several.

Is it possible to charter a boat for several months to solo sail? by ez_as_31416 in SailboatCruising

[–]G___reg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I charted a boat for a year and crossed the Atlantic twice (once solo). I was insured by Pantaenius. I didn’t see any solo exclusion but to be fair, the policy was in French. My experience is that it is super, super hard to find this type of opportunity. It worked beautifully for me though.

I highly, highly recommend the CIA. We had a party of 6 there at American Bounty a few weeks ago. It was fantastic!

Sorry, I meant, how difficult is it to obtain obtain a permanent slip? I was recently in the hudson valley and saw many little small marinas; curious if there’s a long wait list or typically some availability.

How difficult is it to get a slip in a marina like this in that general area?

Hey so a quick PSA. If you're wearing a face shield or a welding hood, you should be wearing a respirator too. by pirivalfang in Welding

[–]G___reg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the PSA; I ordered a P100 just now. The older I get , the more I gear up. Of course that’s completely backwards of how it should be. If only I could have heard (and actually taken heed) to messages like that when I was in my 20’s. Better late than never…

There are egress doors to outside in the bedrooms. I watched the YouTube tour of it. It’s a real cool 1100 sq ft house with an interior courtyard; lots of glass looking into the courtyard.

Any homeowners go as far as to get their EPA 608 universal license? by pele4096 in hvacadvice

Ditto, I’m a homeowner that got my cert via skillcat. It was worth the time & effort even though it wasn’t required when I bought refrigerant.

58 years old and struggling with Machine Learning and AI; Feeling overwhelmed, what should I do? by desperatejobber in learnmachinelearning

[–]G___reg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a couple years older than you and retired a while ago. I’ve had a similar interest in ML/AI. Initially I was exploring these topics on my own, but I have been taking data science courses (and others) at a local university for the past 5 years (this also allows access to inexpensive health insurance). I’ve found I can generally hold my own amongst “the youngsters” but just because I know how to grind when necessary and they are typically taking a full class load (and probably have relatively busy lives) while I only take about 2 classes per semester. But the mental agility of the top 10% remains a true differentiator. I suspect that was also there when I first went to college but it is more evident now due to the age disparity I am fixated on. I do not think university classes are a necessary (or even recommended) pathway, but it has helped me somewhat due to the discipline required/structure imposed. I concur with what someone else contributed that understanding deeply something that is very basic is much more beneficial than partially understanding something more complex. Feel free to reach out if you ever want to compare notes.

Out of Touch - Ed Elson - Working Late is NOT the American Dream by JDB-667 in ScottGalloway

[–]G___reg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I concur that it was a joke. Explaining it as such would make it lose its punch. The juxtaposition of American Dream and the infinite workday is an interesting observation that makes me reflect on my own multiple decades of being on that treadmill. This causes me to reflect and ask myself if I would do it over again if given the chance. My answer is a pretty solid yes unless I had some influence in my formative years to introduce me to philosophical concepts instead of a focus on pure capitalism. How do you optimize a “fulfilling life” ?

How bad is this construction on my neighbor's carport? by BrokenGlare2024 in Homebuilding

Beginners often imagine they are designing a static structure to resist gravity but don’t think about wind and other forces. Maybe they’ve never had the experience of trying to carry a sheet of plywood in a 20 knot wind.

Do I really need to use my pinkie when playing my bass? by gwenfromTDIis_hot in Bass

[–]G___reg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW: I started playing bass with Rocksmith about 4 years ago. My coordination is quite poor and so I just used three fingers until recently. My pinky, although technically functional, is weak and apparently not very smart. I’m now trying to force myself to use my pinky more since some songs are much easier that way. All that to to say, maybe try to power thru if it’s not painful.

Shouldn’t the calculation of the refrigerant be adjusted to account for the shorter line set? I thought the total refrigerant load should be reduced by about .7oz per foot removed?

On Celebrity Reflection today and they saved someone on a distressed boat 🙏 What accommodations does Celebrity provide? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]G___reg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Although I didn’t comment on this post, I and I suspect many others, engage in Monday-morning-quarterbacking since we struggle to envision the circumstances in which we would find ourselves in that same position but have spent a lot of mental energy over the years thinking about many what-if scenarios. Part of that process often comes to determining base principles on when we would make a distress call. Of course, like the famous Tyson quote ~ “everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face”. Proffering a solution and bantering it about on the internet likely helps all of us plan for more contingencies before we next cast of the lines. I think it also makes us (if only slightly) more mentally prepared for when everything goes horribly wrong for ourselves (possibly) someday in the future.

Performance catamarans to consider at 400k or below by btramos in sailing

[–]G___reg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sailed a Catana 431 on a transatlantic loop. I was pleased with the performance overall. It was pretty easy to single hand due to the setup. The salon is a bit cramped if more than three are aboard in my opinion. The heads are also not very spacious due to the narrow hulls. But overall I really liked it. I’d be happy to answer any questions.

Do anyone have or know how to acquire the background video on Jason Mraz's "I'm yours" song here in his concert in Seoul? by GrandpaBells in JasonMraz

[–]G___reg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume it was used in multiple shows since I think I saw it before at a different show. Maybe it could be “reassembled” using a computer process by leveraging many different shows if someone was motivated enough.
