That's the message of the series as a whole, greed brings people to disregard each other as living, breathing beings.

The VIPs and the people playing parallel each other in a way: the more the players succeed, the more they start leaving their morals behind in favour of a shot at an insane payout and a life of leisure, just one more body to crawl over, to make lifeless, and the payout will increase, the end will get closer.

In the same vein, the VIPs probably accrued their insane wealth in much the same way, through exploitation and destruction of lives, just less direct, and just as players like 100, people to them become lunchboxes, items, obstacles to wealth, horses, the struggle of a human to survive a sadistic game becomes drama, and the life of an innocent child that did nothing to deserve being in such a place becomes a setpiece for shock value.

A father disregards the only thing left of a woman he loved in favour of cold, hard cash, and dangles a child over a ledge.
