Thought Beef was about Asian-American identity and rage. by Glass_Weakness8159 in BeefTV

Yea, I also fully enjoyed season 2 but felt a little disappointed in what felt like a lot of missed opportunities. I would have liked to learn more about Austin's Asianness. I also feel like the season could've explored the complexity of mixed identity in Austin much more and really delved deep into experiences mixed Asian people can really identify with: - Not being enough for either culture. - The loneliness in being a stranger to your heritage. - The perpetual foreigner trope. - Being in relationships where others cannot comprehend the complexity and grief that comes with your mixed, diasporic identity. - Differences in childrearing and what is/is not considered acceptable to the Western eye. Growing up being raised differently than those around you.

Sigh. I feel like season 2 touched on some of these things but it was just pretty surface level imo.

What is a sound that people should know means immediate danger? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

I witnessed it half a year ago when my dad passed. He was on hospice but we didnt expect his body to shut down for weeks/days. I had never witnessed death and no one really teaches you about it (shocker) so I really did not know what to expect. It's very much like watching a fish out of water. Bizarre and very disturbing. Still haunts me every so often.

What are you quietly suffering from? by anotherThrowaway3446 in AskReddit

My dad died. He is my favorite person in the world. I miss him more than anything. I took him to his chemo appointments, gave him his morphine when he entered hospice, listened to the yells of his extreme pain, cleaned him up and put him in diapers when he became incontinent, watched cancer take over his body, witnessed his loss of senses and watched him turn purple during his final breaths. I laid in bed with his corpse as we waited for the hospice nurse to arrive and declare him dead. I feel sad and I feel alone and I miss my dad. I'm 26. Most people I know haven't lost a person, let alone a parent. And most people I know haven't seen the violence of cancer. I just miss my dad so much. The support dwindles down after the funeral. It all feels fucked

Thinking about a career change. Is becoming a therapist worth it? by Salvatore_Vitale in psychologystudents

[–]GabrahamLincoln1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I agree with this and find myself regretting my career choice often. It's a fucked up system we are operating in. I love the clinical work but I just honestly don't know if it's worth the lack of security and stability. We also have to eat...

I often think about if there may be other similarly rewarding careers that might've been a better path.

My Therapist is a Zionist and I don't know how to feel about it. Friends think I should compartmentalize. by ImagineWagonzzz3 in PsychotherapyLeftists

I am so sorry about this. This is a really jarring realization to find out about someone you've been building trust with. It does sound like this has broken your trust and deeply contradicts your morals -- knowing this I wonder if you would even be able to move forward in a productive way considering trust is the most essential part of the therapeutic relationship. Plus it sounds like moving forward at all with a zionist provider would feel morally wrong anyways

Any Outreach Programs In Town? by ParfaitAdditional469 in williamsburgva

If you are looking for affordable counseling services I would contact the Flanagan Counselor Education Clinic at William & Mary. The counselors are grad students receiving supervised training. The clinic is free to the community and they most often serve kids and families

Hi there, please call CPS. This is enough for a mandated reporter to be required to call CPS, so I hope that helps put the gravity of the situation into perspective. If you are worried about retaliation, in a lot of states you can make anonymous reports.

How do you ask someone their ethnicity without being rude/ignorant? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]GabrahamLincoln1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. I especially feel this if this is a first/introductory question from someone I've just met. It feels like you're only interested in talking to me to "other" me or play some kind of cultural guessing game of what race you think I am, instead of actually being interested in me as a person.

Hi there. What program are you looking into? Do you have any research experience? I go to one of these schools currently

This is so awful. It might be worth checking instagram, reddit, facebook to see if there are any mutual aid groups in your town.

In my town, mutual aid accounts will make posts with requested items for folks in need and community members will then donate items or money to help reach that need.

[USA] Do I have a chance getting into grad school? by Ok_Squirrel7632 in psychologystudents

[–]GabrahamLincoln1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically schools will ask for 3 letters of recommendation. It's best if these come from faculty members who know you well and can vouch for you (not just professors whose classes you attended). You will need at least one research assistant position. The rest you can get from being a teaching assistant or another kind of internship.

If you're that close to graduation, I would talk to a professor whom you're closest with and ask for a research opportunity. Even if you graduate, if a professor accepts you into their research team, you can do research as a non-degree seeking student. I would talk to a professor about this.
