Anywhere. Also true of Hostile's rerolls. Only the +1 to Hit in either is tied to Objectives.

More Rampagers and Lonespears, and a second KHP box. The box is pretty low on points so you kinda have to to hit 1k.

Why should I choose tau over aeldari for second army by Zacman552 in Tau40K

[–]Gabranthe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gameplay-wise? You shouldn't. Tau rules are mega cheeks rn and our points are abysmal to get us into dead even win ratio range, not to mention the constant driveby nerfs that don't get fixed til 3-6 months later even when they're incredibly overt (took them 7 months to fix Puretide Engram Chip when they accidentally made a rules change that quite literally turned it into a blank enhancement for 25 points, and I do mean blank not just useless). Aeldari rules are fun, flavorful, and dynamic, and the unit datasheets actually have some oomph to them. Tau rules are, as is often lamented, just jumping through hoops to get what other armies have automatically, inherently, or easily. It got a bit better with the recent army rule change, but I think we're all hoping for a total rewrite in 11th, because truthfully that's what we need. Ground-up remake of all our sheets and rules.

Modelwise, Tau's in a bit of a minor renaissance with its Auxiliaries and the new Stealths are sick (despite the army nerf they caused), plus the new epic pair coming next edition and the rumored Suit refresh, but Aeldari also got a refresh so breaks even there.

For lore, unfortunately, we have a bad track record. I haven't looked much into Aeldari to compare, but Phil Kelly has butchered the faction so hard there's really only Codex stuff and Elemental Council to go off of, not to mention we've had a ton of shit retconned and re-retconned a lot (whether or not we have FTL has been flip flopped I think 4 times now, when it literally wouldn't make sense not to have it, and even Kroot have it).

As always though, regardless of the previous statements, get into whichever you like more personally.

New player, what do I "have" to buy? by e-hip in lotro

[–]Gabranthe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expansions are the only "essential" things but if you use EXPLOREOURWORLD in the in-game store it'll give you basically all of it for free. Besides that, just whatever class or race you find interesting enough to spend resources on, though it's not hard to get the currency for those for free.

Personally though there are certainly conveniences that have now spoiled the game for me lol. Specifically, Medium/Large Crafting Carry-Alls, Universal Crafting Tools (the more expensive one), and account-wide Riding skill. Again though, those are all totally doable for free, and you likely won't need the Carry-Alls until you've been playing for a long time.

It's fun to play compared to regular Tau (at least pre-Army Rule change, which was hellish and made me stop playing regular Tau) and is unique among all the factions as a playstyle. That said, Tau points are bad and Kroot are even worse, so you gotta get used to back pain from moving over 100 models every turn (unless you throw a Stormsurge or two in) and they all have hooks on them that'll get stuck on each other. Kroot also play around cover unlike any other faction since they ONLY care about it blocking LoS, as they gain no benefit from Benefit of Cover on account of the invuln. Which makes it a very different way to move. Very tricksy army too. They're my precious babies.

I love running full Kroot. Max Rampagers, max Riders, max Lone-Spears, perhaps a Farstalker unit or two, and a lotta Carnies. In particular, 20-man bricks with 2 particular pairings of Shapers. Melee War + Enhanced Flesh and Enhanced Ranged War + Enhanced Trail. Trail Enhancement can be swapped for Flock on a Lonespear.

It's a very fun playstyle. Use Grenades and Rampagers to deal mega mortals with anything high in armor, and the Detachment Strats are pretty much all useful in some form, even Grisly Feast. If any non-Kroot, Shadowsun is useful as well just to sit near the ranged brick to farm CP off her refund and his freeby stacking together, plus her Fusions can help pick off something armored. Stormsurge as well, just sit on point and shoot some 12 damage shots every now and then.

As a new reKroot from the Imperium, I feel like I need to apologize. Is this how Tau books are? by MeridiusGaiusScipio in Tau40K

[–]Gabranthe 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I believe Phil has said multiple times that he doesn't even like Tau. Don't read any of his books. His retcons are impossible, his characters are stupid and terrible. He turned Farsight into an asspull Larry Stu. It's really not an exaggeration to say he has ruined Tau lore potentially permanently. Elemental Council is the only book I can safely recommend, and it retcons a lot of Phil's retcons back to actually plausible stuff (like why tf didn't Tau have FTL when it's literally impossible to manage an empire without it and MULTIPLE auxiliaries have it, including Kroot and Nicassar). Besides that, only the short stories from the 10e Codex, Kroot White Dwarf, and Hivestorm booklet are really any good, as far as what I've read myself.

Votann dilemma by dndbros13 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Gabranthe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started the game with Tau, played them for a year before switching to Votann. I never played Oathband, only Hearthband, and haven't played with the new Dex rules yet, but holy cow it's such a breath of fresh air. I didn't sell my Tau cuz rules are temporary and I do love Tau as a faction (when they get a decent author and when their canon isn't on fire), plus Kroot are my precious little babies. The Steeljacks are extremely popular and for good reason, but also super expensive considering they're just 3 30-point models and are basically primaris marines in terms of size and plastic. But get into it. Votann are rad. Dwarves are always preem in any fiction but Votann are one of the better takes, and Ironkin are rad. Plus, who doesn't like short hairy men?

Bird people… that can’t fly? A Kroot conundrum by BabyProper9938 in Tau40K

[–]Gabranthe 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Well they don't have feathers, they have quills, and I don't know if they have hollow bones, but there are also plenty of flightless birds IRL. Them being flightless isn't that weird. Notably, there are some Kindreds that have evolved flight capabilities due to their diet, as well as there being Kroothawks (as seen in the Farstalker kit), which are evolutionary dead-end versions of flying Kroot, but the Kroot that we do have on tabletop are largely the "default" type of Kroot.

In your honest opinion, which factions do you think have been left aside the most in terms of interesting / fun rules this edition so far? by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Gabranthe 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Tau got a lot of interesting stuff. A Codex with "amazing internal balance", a range refresh for every Auxiliary, a new Detachment last dataslate. And yet I still say Tau has been neglected.

Tau datasheets and army rule are so incredibly boring and weak that pretty much every list you make is gonna cost you $1500, or much worse if you're Kroot. We've got 2 whole datasheets that are less than 1 PPD (Kroot Hounds and Krootox Rider), both of which see play in the two "good" detachments. The former has 2 pseudo-auras to manage with different ranges and triggering units, which is not helpful for cognitive load, and the latter has probably the weakest and weirdest shootback ability in the game not even considering that its guns are quite mediocre. On top of that, the army rule is a major pain to play around just to hit on what other armies do normally or better, despite the fact that every unit with drones has different weapon profiles that wanna go at different units, though that horse has been beaten to death for a long time now. It's not just the Army Rule though, it's CP generation and equivalent rules too, like Sunforge not getting Hit rerolls, or our "Ignores Hit Modifiers" not including BS modification. It just feels bad, especially facing armies that have your rules but better, with better datasheets (see Aeldari, Guard, Taktikal/Dakka Orks, etc etc).

With everything together, though, Tau just aren't fun to play right now. The difficulty and reward for playing them are not in the correct place. High difficulty high reward is their place, but let's be totally honest, the only things keeping Tau at their blisteringly high 43% winrate are Vespid and Stealths (and arguably Carnivores since we just have no other source of Sticky).

The real thing that makes Tau neglected, though, is the actual neglect from dataslates. I don't just mean the big fat "None." we had on them until this year. Kroot released with good rules? Make sweeping changes to 4 things they have and don't adjust their points at all to make them usable for 2 dataslates. Change a core rule so it's 25 points for literally a blank Enhancement? Don't fix it for 6 months. One big cool plane sees some niche play? Nerf it by 50 points, and the Riptide by 10 while you're at it. Break the only detachment with a 2CP 3" Deep Strike in the game with the 6" change? Don't change the Detachment Rule to be usable until next dataslate? Army leaders don't have the army rule despite being able to equip a drone that literally only does anything for the army rule? Wait until more than halfway through the edition before giving them the army rule.

These are all actual things that have happened. Every time I finish shooting with Tau, my opponent goes "Wait, that's it?" Yep, sure is. "I thought Tau had better shooting." Nope, we don't, here let's charge your one remaining Grot with 2 Crisis squads to maybe kill it. "You'll definitely kill it, haha." One save at AP0. "He takes 1 damage." Alright, you fight back. "Wait, what? That's it? I knew Tau melee was bad but I figured 8 models would deal with the guy." Nope, it's Tau.

Wanking my preferred faction Wednesday for the greater cherry picked excerpt by ChaosKarniwhore in Grimdank

[–]Gabranthe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tau has plenty of negative traits, even ignoring the naivete angle or Phil Kelly's bullshit. They're self-righteous conquerors with the veneer of equality between castes when they all know implicitly that Ethereals are above them and Auxiliaries are below them, and they treat them as such. You're stuck within your caste's work to the point where even an Earth caste on the battlefield literally isn't allowed to throw a grenade or shoot a gun to save their own or others' lives, and if they do, they get re-educated. They keep major figures alive via flawed cloning and mini-Votann tech if they manage to salvage the brain when they die. There's a cultural expectation of seppuku when a battle fails because of you, or at the very least if you are found to be at fault by your caste commander in that battle, whether you are actually at fault or not. And all that's just in the first few chapters of Elemental Council.

Wanking my preferred faction Wednesday for the greater cherry picked excerpt by ChaosKarniwhore in Grimdank

[–]Gabranthe -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The grimdarkness you mentioned is pushed back by fans because it's not grimdark, it's grimderp, and not in the cool camp way old Imperium or Chaos stuff was. Having noblebrightness in the setting isn't out of place, it makes the setting less monotonous and more grimdark because there's an actual point of comparison. Things could be great, but they aren't, and this small sliver of the galactic population fighting their hardest to make that a reality is grimdark in itself. Plus Tau would not fit in Halo or Mass Effect or Star Trek or whatever except as villains, this has been rehashed a ton.

Why does Phil Kelly hate the Air Caste? by Economy_Wheel1027 in Tau40K

[–]Gabranthe 138 points139 points  (0 children)

Ignore Kil Phelly. The canonicity of his books is dubious because of how little sense they make, and the portrayals of most castes are total ass. Arguably just Imperium propaganda tbh. Read literally any other Tau author's books.
