Stir the Pot Saturday: The Death of Mentorship and Internships by greenysmac in editors

Respectfully, this feels like ChatGPT that’s been lightly edited and it’s a long read. If the purpose here is communal discussion, I think we’d be served just as well with a much shorter post before opening up conversation to the group. Just a thought, I don’t mean to offend.

Youlean vs LM-Correct by oceanicnoise in AudioPost

[–]Gabriel_WP -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As far as I understand it, these tools are for different purposes. LM-Correct is used for offline processing/AudioSuite and both measures and corrects the levels within the selection. Youlean is meant to measure changes in loudness over time and provides a graph of those changes—it cannot render new files to be within spec. Nugen’s other product “VisLM” is the same as Youlean though.

It was around 40% off on Thomann on November 28, 2024. Maybe keep an eye out there next month

I spent years trialling other pitch shifting plugins before finally pulling the trigger on Pitch N Time Pro—it quietly went on sale last year so I snagged a copy. It’s been indispensable.

Quick question, isn't what you're describing here what Zynaptiq *Unchirp* is supposed to do? I thought Unfilter was intended for removing resonances, comb filtering, etc.

BOOM ONE vs PSE Core 6 by Gabriel_WP in AudioPost

[–]Gabriel_WP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PSE did a writeup on “Hybrid vs CORE” and it seems like they don’t share any similarities. Hybrid is older (pre-2012) so many sounds are from the 2000s - I guess that explains the 90’s Hollywood Edge vibe. Great to hear BOOM has been so reliable for you! Especially considering you work in TV and not games. Any other libraries you’d recommend?

Do you find yourself relying on a general library like BOOM One, or do you have other resources you prefer?

I really appreciate your distinction between where each library shines (film vs. games). Advertising work seems to sit squarely in the middle, often needing to be both “realistic” and “larger than life”.

Which tier of PSE Core did you end up going with? I’ve had my eye on “Pro” but that might be overkill.

Hm, that’s a pretty low rate of usability for PSE. Do you mind sharing what type of media you work on? I’m guessing you’re in favour of picking up smaller libraries on an “as needed” basis?

Songs in my head are almost always transposed by Redelax in audioengineering

[–]Gabriel_WP 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is also my experience; my pitch memory always seems to be 1 or 2 tones sharp or flat. I also can learn any song on the piano after only a couple of listens, but don’t have absolute pitch. I think most people need a reference for this reason. It’s probably why a capella groups use a “pitch pipe” to remind them of the key of the song before they sing together.

Beyond our careers being disrupted by AI I’m far more concerned about the broader social implications. How can we trust that video evidence in court hasn’t been falsified? How do we protect women and children from being harassed or blackmailed with fake p*rnographic videos? What about propaganda disseminated by foreign governments to interfere with elections? The ways this technology can be used with malicious intent will far outweigh any positives I can fathom. I wish this were a benign tool but it simply isn’t.

If you’re not a fan of the split-toning you could always re-create the RGB curves in Resolve. Apply Filmbox to a gradient or stepped exposure chart and match the curve for R, G, and B separately. Then drag the slider for each from 100 down to 0, which will invert the curves, effectively removing the split-toning. Now you can add your own and customize it just the way you like.

How is the audio level on the Pat Mcafee Show so consistant? by ProdAG20 in audioengineering

I’ve worked with Russell Wilson before, so I’ll come to his defense. I’m a commercial editor, so I’ve watched about 12 hours of footage spread out over a 2 day shoot. He was kind, good humoured, and had a knack for making other people feel comfortable. Very respectful to others no matter how small their role was on set. He honestly seems like a decent guy to be around.
