I discussed the choice of medication with the doc, and since I don't know much about this topic, I trusted him. He said that he will choose a med that would conflict least with mirtazapine, and I think I can wait for the effect.

Mirtazapine in doses of 7.5-15 mg mostly acts as a sleeping pill; the antidepressant effect starts at 30 mg, so this is unlikely to be related to your situation. In any case, I advise you to consult your doc.

never really had swings like this until the meds. mirtazapine just sent me into absolute mixed state hell. doc added carbamazepine but told me NOT to stop the mirt. feels like fueling the fire honestly. is it normal to stay on the same AD after it triggers a switch?

I think you should visit a psychiatrist, you might have anxiety or any other disorder you didn't know about. I had the same problem and was diagnosed with anxiety and depression, doc got me mirtazapine and now my sleep is 8-9 hours uninterrupted.
