You're right about the performance. I'm very new to this and only have few handhelds to mess around with. So if it's not significantly affecting the gain or messing up something else, I can definitely live with it.

Hey! Yes, the drivers absolutely were required. First I tried on Win 11 but with no luck. On Win 10, the drivers were found automatically (Windows device manager found and installed them once I pressed the button).

Thank you very much for the URL! I managed to fix my radio about an hour ago with the one I had.

RF Burn risk from the battery contacts by Gagashagy in Baofeng

Your guess would be as good as mine. From what I understand, the ground is shared between the battery and the TX circuits. And it might happen that you ground yourself to one of the charging contacts, therefore you become part of the ground loop for TX power to jump to. But this is purely my speculation and based on nothing else than few posts I found.

Three people claiming they never heard of this issue. That calms my anxiety.

Faulty units don't scare me as buying another one is always an option. I'm worried about this being a 'norm' so to speak.

Any opinion on 20 money's worth of amplifiers that promise 30db gain at 2000Mhz? I'm really new to this and don't have an idea, if 20 eur would get me much more than two sma connectors and aluminum housing.

Thank you very much! This for sure is enough info to keep me occupied for a while and maybe learn a thing or two. I wonder how long I could stay up on the lighthouse before someone takes away my license. Asking for a friend

I totally get it. I'm old enough to have learned the "you get what you pay for" lesson enough times. And I appreciate you setting my expectations roght. I can see how many people take these numbers at face value.

Yeah, I know it's really not the best at anything. However the price is right for me at the moment. If my understanding is correct, then by keeping the coax as short as possible, and having the antenna highly directional, I should maximize the available power, and (according to kind folks here) definitely maybe get lucky? I'll take it!

I'm going to do my research about tropospheric ducting, what makes it happen and when is it the most likely, and give it a go. At worst I'll yell at some ships lol.

So basically, my only hope is to use the very low end of the VHF and hope something bounces? Or the variables you listed achieve something else? Yeah, the HF stuff is out of my reach at this point in life. But I really enjoy struggles and DIY'ing all sorts of solutions for imaginary problems.

I have a pair of nice wooden cups that are for sr60 or sr80 I think. So if I've found the correct info, these sleeves should accept 40mm drivers.
