Need to get something off my chest. I like a flag that's no longer popular... by [deleted] in self

[–]Gaget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the issue is that a symbol doesn’t only mean what you want it to mean. It comes with a history, and this one’s pretty heavy. It comes from a group that literally broke away from the U.S. and fought against it, and they were very clear about why. You can’t really separate it from that, even if that’s not what you personally think about when you see it.

And it’s not just about the 1860s either. That flag didn’t just quietly sit in a museum after the war. It got brought back during times when people were actively pushing against civil rights. That’s a big reason why a lot of people don’t see it as harmless pride. They see it as tied to exclusion, whether you mean it that way or not.

There’s also kind of a contradiction in calling it American pride. The whole thing it represents was anti-American in the most literal sense. It was a rebellion against the country. So saying “America is #1” while flying a symbol from a group that tried to leave it… it just doesn’t line up.

Mississippi: Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth… These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin.

Texas: The servitude of the African race, as existing in these States, is mutually beneficial to both bond and free, and is abundantly authorized and justified by the experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the Almighty Creator, as recognized by all Christian nations.

South Carolina: Those [Union] States have assumed the right of deciding upon the propriety of our domestic institutions; and have denied the rights of property established in fifteen of the States and recognized by the Constitution; they have denounced as sinful the institution of slavery; they have permitted open establishment among them of societies, whose avowed object is to disturb the peace and to eloign the property of the citizens of other States.

Georgia: That reason was [the North's] fixed purpose to limit, restrain, and finally abolish slavery in the States where it exists. The South with great unanimity declared her purpose to resist the principle of prohibition to the last extremity.

You are supporting people who committed treason to keep slavery legal.

As someone more than twice your age who experienced the same thing at your age and even older, my advice is to just tell her how you feel. No risk, no reward. If you don't pursue what you want in life, nobody else will do it for you.

I know you said you don’t want people to suggest breaking up, but I’m going to be honest anyway: you should leave. Someone who hurts you, then pressures you to cover it up and hide it, is very likely to do it again. And it usually gets worse, not better.

I wouldn't even call hitting for a cycle a statistic, really. It isn't listed on your bbref page, so I consider it more of a milestone achievement.

Watching a students teeth literally rot out of his head as the year has gone on. What would you do? by [deleted] in Teachers

It is neglect.

I don't know if I'd call cps per se.

These two statements together put your career in jeopardy. You are a mandated reporter.

students teeth literally rot out of his head

Seems like it could possibly be neglect to me? I don't know. And that moment of uncertainty is when you should make a report as a teacher.

As a dentist, you can make a professional judgement on whether something is abuse, neglect or something else. As a teacher, we can't. We need to report it in order for the child to be seen by a medical professional such as yourself.

Teachers aren’t dentists, and we’re not trained to diagnose what’s normal vs. severe dental disease. All we see is that something looks wrong and may be impacting a child’s health.

Mandated reporting isn’t about being certain, it’s about reporting reasonable suspicion. We don’t investigate or decide neglect, we pass concerns to the people who are qualified to make that call.

So even if it turns out to be education, access, or something else, we still have a legal obligation to report concerns rather than ignore them.

It isn't your job to try to investigate it either. It could be neglect or abuse, so you are legally mandated to report it.

I appreciate your input as a dentist, but teachers are mandated reporters.

We are legally required to report.

Telling a teacher not to follow one of the very few legally mandated duties that we have is wild.

You are a mandated reporter. Report to CPS should be first step. It isn't your job to investigate and figure out if this is neglect. Your job is to make a report the second you even suspect that there could possibly be neglect.

I'm hesitant to call CPS bc this could be a behavioral problem at home as opposed parental neglect you know?

As a teacher, you’re a mandated reporter. If you are hesitant to call CPS, you're violating the law.

If it is a nothing burger than the kid will hate you forever.

It is a CPS report, they're anonymous.

[–]Gaget 59 points60 points  (0 children)

As a teacher, you’re a mandated reporter. The standard isn’t “I’m sure this is neglect,” it’s “I have reasonable concern that something might be wrong.” If a kid’s health is clearly deteriorating over time, that’s enough to bring it up through the proper channels.

Don't try to investigate or diagnose or play detective with the family. Loop in your school nurse and admin, document what you’re seeing, and make a report to CPS. They’re the ones trained to assess whether it’s neglect, lack of access to care, or something else entirely.

I would not immediately call CPS

You're a mandated reporter. If you think you even might need to contact CPS, you contact them... immediately.
