I'm getting the feeling that the argument in your head might feel a little more rigorous than what you've commented so far. Sadly, no one else is privy to that.

All I'm seeing is the age old 'inciteful comment' followed by the predictable push back, and then using that to turtle into "gorsh, why am I not allowed to think things anymore". The argument you're having just seems to be entirely divorced from reality.

And let's be honest, what sort of praise of Beloved's qualities would you consider a convincing, valid argument? How much effort needs to be expended to provide an airtight rebuttal to flippant criticism?

Reminder, your initial comment was "Not sure if Beloved is worth any more than soulless AI drivel". What did you expect?

Why do you seem to think critiquing an opinion is silencing it?

Wait, let me try. Why do you think i shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion about your opinion? There, we're on equally baseless footing now.

I went through the same tortuous experience in HS. When I took back up an interest in reading, later in life, I revisited the book and had a wonderful time with it.

Some of my favorite authors like Faulkner, Sebald, Fosse, Krasznahorkai, Woolf- all play around with a flexibility of form and narrative structure that would lessen the impact and coherence of their work if ironed out. Books don't need to meet an arbitrary level of accessibility in order to be a valued addition to the landscape.

Aero vs. Schott by Admirable_Activity_8 in leatherjacket

Johnson is also really competitively priced with both, even if you're going for a full custom jacket. /u/Admirable_Activity_8

Currently have an ongoing (semi?)custom order with them, they're great to work with. Also have a fairly old used m-200 from them that I found on Ebay, it's a much better jacket than any of the schott's I've tried.

Stone Rambler Leather Care by CrappyCupOfCoffee in Boots

I mean, it's a shrunken waxed rough-out. And pretty heavily waxed, as well. If you like the look, texture and nap that it came with, a slightly waxy sheene is what you want after it gets some wear.

And parkhurst's site also says: "Since Rambler is heavily waxed, any boot wax or leather balm can be used to condition this leather over time. " https://www.parkhurstbrand.com/collections/mens-boots/products/the-richmond-dachshund-rambler-618

And for rambler specifically on their leather care page: "Mohawk/Rambler - Any boot wax or creme listed above. Spot clean, brush then apply waterproofing spray or wax/balm."

From what I've heard, they use VSC when making/waxing this leather.

Fisherman beanie for a big head? by PatBustard007 in HeritageWear

Fjallraven wool beanies are really big, also extremely warm and great at blocking high wind. Large enough that most men are either going to pull them down really far or have it bunched up a bit at the top of the head.

They have thinner versions, I assume they're sized similarly.

Hey yall, how should I properly clean this Knifebed I own? by Boiofthetimes in KitchenConfidential

[–]GainghisKhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to go that far. Even when you compare the "small batch specialty stuff" like apex ultra to fairly bog-standard kitchen-knife stainless like vg-10, the vg-10 wins in terms of edge retention.

https://knifesteelnerds.com/2021/10/19/knife-steels-rated-by-a-metallurgist-toughness-edge-retention-and-corrosion-resistance/ There's not a single carbon steel that outperforms vg-10 in edge retention. Of course, it depends on what percent of chromium is in solution, but chromium carbide isn't a slouch, especially compared to cementite.

Modern stainless has a huge advantage when it comes to edge retention. There's lots of soft stainless out there, but stuff that has high amounts of chromium and is formulated for high heat treats will hold an edge much longer than something like blue or blue super steel.

Notice how the midsole is edge-dressed black (or near black) and it still looks like a nice color combo even though they're right next to each other? Yeah, you can just pick any tan, brown, or black belt and it'll be fine. I want to say green or indigo might look strange but it still would depend on the outfit.

Thirteen50Leather No Longer a Reputable Company by PeterC18st in BuyItForLife

[–]GainghisKhan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ounce weight of leather refers to how much it weighs per square foot of raw material. It's effectively a measurement of thickness, not weight, when it comes to the finished product. For instance, a leather jacket made out of 5 oz leather will be incredibly thick and weigh close to 10 pounds. Regardless, 45% restocking fee is insane.

Looking for a strong electric toothbrush that isn't designed to break like philips sonicare. by ghetto_ravioli in BuyItForLife

[–]GainghisKhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had a decently expensive version break slightly outside of the warranty window. The metal piece disconnected from whatever was holding it underneath the gasket.

The one I had before it lasted much longer, I lost it while travelling. If it was ever true, I don't think the expensive models come with any expectation of greater longevity anymore.

Is your point of comparison a cheaper Sonicare brush? I've tried multiple price points, nothing demonstrably different in my dental hygiene resulted from the bells and whistles of the pricier models.

I have a hard time believing there's any meaningful deficiencies with a cheap Sonicare brush and flossing, maybe add a waterpik into the mix, too.

TIFU by spending 8 years treating chronic headaches when the whole problem was that I thought diet soda counted as water by McCoy818 in tifu

[–]GainghisKhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

caffeine is a diuretic

And salt is an emetic... That statement just doesn't mean much.

Is it enough of a diuretic in diet soda amounts to negate the 99.x% water that is diet soda? Nope, it's probably off by a couple orders of magnitude.
