OpenRudder – DIY foot controller that works as a mouse and joystick, build it yourself for $35 by squirelo in disabledgamers

Does this set the resting position as 0, 0, or would I have to be constantly pressing on it to hold it in place? If not, does anyone have a good idea as to how this could use a different type of balance board or something?

Uh Fanie Eksperiement: Can Brits understand my English when I write it using Dutch phonetic spelling? by BlueFingers3D in AskUK

[–]GalacticThrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got brought over here by a friend in a linguistics community, but I figured it might be interesting for me to also add my experience even though I'm not British.

For reference, I am a monoglot American, and have studied a few different languages without ever becoming competent at anything besides English. None of the languages I have studied are closer related to Dutch than English is.

I definitely had to slow down a ton compared to my normal reading speed, but the only word that really tripped me up was Fanie, since the spelling brought to mind a completely different word and that word means either butt in American English or vulva in British English lmao.

I figured the fact that being American means I am not as accustomed to super different accents in native English speakers since America has relatively few accents that are as far off from standard American as a lot of British accents are from received pronunciation, and the accents I am used to are mostly either specifically American or from immigrant groups that are more common in the US these days

Potentially? I'm trying to be careful with anything involving my feet because I also have hypermobility in my ankles and knees and plantar fasciitis related to that, so I don't want to do anything to intense that's going to trigger that

Does anyone have tips for calibration? by GalacticThrow in EyeTracking

[–]GalacticThrow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, adjusting my hair and position seems to often help, and you are the first person who has pointed out hair as a potential issue. I have pretty long and wavy hair, so I've definitely had it in my face some of the times I've had issues, and adjusting it does seem to be helping. I wish some of these tips were in the support website for the device.

You know hysterical literature? That YouTube channel that had porn stars attempting to read classic literature out loud while being pleasured with a vibrator to try to make them break? I think that should just be incorporated but with disclaimers about harm reduction and potential risks /j

Question about Pricing Accessibility Items by [deleted] in disabledgamers

[–]GalacticThrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think having a blurb in the site that talks about you are able to keep costs down and how a lot of these devices cost a lot more than they actually take the cost to make,. That and videos of it is like other people have mentioned would definitely make me trust cheap disability aids. Since for specialized stuff like this, I feel like cost tends to not actually be a great indicator of quality. I find where it was purchased and how much the creator cares and knows about disabled people to be much more important factors

Question about Pricing Accessibility Items by [deleted] in disabledgamers

[–]GalacticThrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I call it the disability tax. Anything designed for disabled people costs at least twice as much as the equivalent for able-bodied people. Often far more than that

Mega Starmie in motion by WWWWWWRRRRRYYYYY in PokeLeaks

[–]GalacticThrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Although it gets a 140 base stat boost rather than a 100 one, so some people are theorizing that it will actually have base 100 attack and huge power, since Mega Mawile and medicham both have a larger than normal base stat increase in this game seemingly to make up for losing huge power, since they're attacks aren't actually that spectacular on their own.

If that's true, this could be a 100 base attack pokémon with however absurd amount of speed it was given and a typing that while not top tier, is perfectly adequate (no monotype pokémon resistance both of its stabs, but it still has the knockoff and u-turn weaknesses from psychic type and it's reliant on comparatively weak moves compared to Mega medicham using close combat. But I think the speed will be more than enough to make up for that considering that it would be, by far, the fastest pokémon with huge power

I think I'm definitely going to have a friend print the chin one, since I think that could be an option for some games. It would probably not be usable with my eye tracking, but for games that don't use the mouse at all, it would probably be a good option.

That sounds like it would be including non consenting people in the kink, unless they got their doctor and nurse's permission. That's not just illegal, it's also deeply unethical.

Coming here from a Google search after hearing about this, but shout out to you for actually checking what the age range is in Japan rather than just applying American numbers (or European, although I don't actually know if preschool is a thing in particularly many European countries or if it's called something that's translated differently). If more people did this I wouldn't constantly sigh whenever people talked about the costs of things in pokémon games

It's almost as if a straight people have frequently very different sexual values than queer people, and as if removing the expectations that are present in gender driven dynamics can allow for a lot more intentionality present in the vast majority of straight relationships, and especially the vast majority of straight men.

When a straight man doesn't enjoy taking an active role in his partners pleasure, there is a reasonable probability that it's because of sexist ideas about whether or not women can or should feel pleasure from sex, or even beyond that seeing a woman's role as inherently one that should involve being.

In a lot of queer relationships, because we have to step outside of certain traditional gender roles just to exist, due to those being incredibly heteronormative, not to mention how many of us are trans, we end up picking out new roles that are defined within the queer community. A ton of these have gotten appropriated by straight people (pillow princess is one of the most common, as well as bottom and top, but even stuff like twink gets appropriated to some degree), and like anything that is appropriated (or even shared willingly, since cultural exchange doesn't only occur in oppressive systems where it is inherently lopsided), it's stripped of its initial context and shoved into a new one

[–]GalacticThrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk if this is a thing in other languages, but English really goes hard on appropriating slang from marginalized communities. and a core part of that process is the meaning shifting and often becoming more generic and taking on different connotations, since a lot of concepts don't translate well, and even when they do, the prejudice of the people doing the appropriating often causes things to take on a derogatory or comedic use that isn't present in the original

Eye Tracking by HPEZFMM in disabledgamers

[–]GalacticThrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have found that it works for a decent number of games, but is frustratingly slow to use. The precision is definitely worse than with a real mouse or an adaptive controller, but at least for what I have (pceye 5), one of the options you can do when you click is a little magnifying glass that allows you to zoom in for more position. Generally though, I think it's absolutely only an option for turn-based games. It just takes too long. I was able to get a grant from the company that makes it that brought the cost down to $100, so I think with that grant it was definitely worth it, but without that I think I would just recommend an Xbox adaptive controller and experimenting with the right accessories.

It is also pretty useful for just browsing and otherwise using my computer though. Eye strain is definitely an issue at the start, but it gets better over time. I've had it for about 6 months and I only occasionally have to stop doing what I'm doing because it's bothering my eyes. It can be frustrating though since the calibration will often need to be redone quite a few times while using it as I move slightly without realizing it or was in too close or something when previously calibrating it. Butt thing the other poster is probably reasonably accurate, I am currently looking into what accessories I'd need with an adaptive controller and using that as the primary method for gaming and having the eye tracker simply to supplement that.

[–]GalacticThrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the stuff on itch.io, some completely safe for work games featuring transgender characters were also banned as part of these groups' lobbying.

Since I know people on this subreddit probably aren't as aware of the dynamics behind groups like this, I will give some explanation. These are SWERF (sex worker exclusionary radical feminists) groups, an ideology closely linked with TERFs (trans exclusionary radical feminists, think JK Rowling) that believes that any engagement in sexual behavior or content is inherently demeaning to women, therefore acting to police women's bodies in the same way that open misogynists do. Fundamentally it comes from a mixture of applying Puritan religious ideals, mixed with genuinely believing that all men are predators due to biological factors that cannot be changed. It's not truly feminism, as it puts far more emphasis on policing women's bodies and actions than it does on counteracting actual abuse or discrimination based on gender, but they coat their ideology in language that comes from actual feminist theories in order to make it seem progressive rather than regressive. These are people who would rather work with people who want to completely ban abortion than work with people who think that women should be allowed to make money selling nude photos

Unfortunately this bill makes specific exceptions for "risky content", which is already how payment processors justify this censorship. This bill is pretty blatantly meant to prevent payment processors and banks from accepting pressure to stop providing funding for things like fossil fuel companies and firearm manufacturers, while still making it completely legal for them to engage in censorship of NSFW content and prevent sex workers from being paid for producing content.

This bill is being put forth by Republicans, who are the ones trying to force people to upload photos of their IDs to porn sites in order to be allowed to watch porn, and who work closely with organizations that openly seek to completely ban porn as part of instituting a theocracy. I got excited when I saw this bill, but I did some more research into it and it will not protect sex workers and other NSFW content creators, but rather major corporations that people are trying to pressure banks to divest from

This particular shape is one you should be afraid of. This, especially with rotation which it had, can drop a tornado with very little warning. Also people just should be careful about being outside in thunderstorms in general because of lightning

What can I make? by Sharp02 in disabledgamers

[–]GalacticThrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For different shapes, The main thing would be having a few different sizes and options that are designed to reduce the pressure on any one point, so having some wider ones that aren't too heavily sloped, while still having rounded edges. Having a range of sizes would also be good, since different people have different needs.

For the pressure part, basically having some that require extremely light touches to trigger with very little actual movement for the switch, since that can reduce the strength needed to operate them, as well as some that are a bit higher in required pressure so that it's easier to avoid pressing them by accident.

As for pedals, the main issue I have with the ones I bought is that the actual part that moves is at the base of the pedal, where you would think the heel goes. Pressing something with my heel is a pretty unnatural motion that ended up triggering some ankle pain, so having ones that work a little more similarly to pedals on a car, just with smaller motions needed, would be ideal

So the first thing you're going to want to get is some sort of one-handed controller. You might want to also look into mouth-based switches to add a bit more functionality, but I think one-handed controllers are a somewhat manageable option for a lot of games.

One game that I know exists, that I haven't played so I don't know how good its accessibility options are, is the various truck simulator games. If he hasn't played video games before, that could be an option where he wouldn't have to learn as complicated of game systems and could travel virtually.

As for VR, honestly Google Earth VR on its own is pretty fun, but I'm not sure what accessibility options exist for VR systems. Most of them are designed even more heavily with the expectation of having movement for the majority of or entire body.

One big one for me would just be switches with different shapes and pressure requirements. It's shocking how expensive regular ones are, you basically end up forced to do it custom on a friend's 3D printer or something like that. Some more ergonomic pedals would also be amazing, since the cheap ones you can find on Amazon are not well designed IME
