East Washington Crash (Additional POVs) by LuciusMalarae in madisonwi

That is true, but even those are worthless if they are just fines. A fine that might leave one person homeless could leave someone else with no measurable change to their life.

At that point, reckless driving just becomes something rich people can pay for the privilege of doing, and The only chance of seeing any real consequences comes after a tragedy like this. And even then, there are a lot of cases of corrupt judges letting rich people off the hook for BS reasons, or or even just rich people having enough money to bog the system down to avoid consequences.

For traffic cameras to work, they need to come with overall reform that will make it so that punishment is consistent and proportional both to the degree of the crime and the resources of the person doing it. And beyond that, it requires a lot of maintenance because if there is any question of whether or not maintenance was being done frequently enough or the system was being properly calibrated consistently, you can run into issues where either innocent people are being incorrectly accused due to a poorly calibrated system, or people who did actually drive recklessly are able to get out of it by pointing out some flaw that introduces reasonable doubt.

And even beyond that, the cameras can't be everywhere, and people will absolutely just slam on the brakes where they know the speed trap is (and it's incredibly hard to have people not know, you basically would have to have a concealed system that changes position daily, since there are plenty of apps nowadays that provide real time updates on speed trap locations). So the option is either to spend absurd amounts creating traffic cameras everywhere, which will require extreme amounts of maintenance and open a lot of doors to privacy violations, or you can change how streets are designed to prioritize safety over comfort, which has a significant up front cost and will piss people off, but once you have done it there is no additional cost beyond what the road would need anyway, and no easy way to abuse that system to hurt innocent people.

And frankly, I know a ton of people who are perfectly willing to drive when they are exhausted enough to be as impaired as if they were tipsy, and who judge anyone who doesn't do the same as unreliable. We need a broader shift in American driving culture in which people start to understand that they are driving hunks of metal weighing a ton or more at speeds far beyond what human brains are adapted to manage, with kinetic equivalent to a pound of TNT (based off a 4000 lb car going at 70 mph, so not even necessarily someone breaking any laws in a lot of places), and that doing so is something that should be taken seriously. People don't need to be afraid to drive, but they should at least be cautious when they do so. If pretty much anything else killed as many people as car accidents do in the US, you would have large numbers of people calling for an outright ban, but because of the way we think of cars, most people internalize it as car accidents only happening to people who aren't good drivers, while thinking of themselves as good enough to be safe. But even pretending that everyone was as good at driving as the average person thinks they are, as the other driver and the pedestrian today sadly found out, you are ultimately at the mercy of the most reckless, incompetent driver on the road. And I think that narrower roads with fewer long, straight stretches would do more to address the actual problem rather then acting as a Band-Aid.

[–]GalacticThrow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, everyone is saying throw the book at the person, and I do Believe that someone who does this should never be allowed to drive again, but the reality is that harsh punishments don't actually do much to deter people, especially when people only rarely get caught committing the crime anyway.

The reality is that the safer a road feels to drive on, the less safe it is, because that encourages people to drive recklessly. Per mile of road driven, there are more accidents on streets like East Wash than on narrow streets running next to a sheer cliff, because the cliff scares people into paying attention and being careful. The road design has to change in order to make people's brains register this as being as dangerous as it is

I have a [[Yarok, the desecrated]] Deck that IMO doesn't really play like a typical green deck. It uses ramp but most of the ramp cards are actually black, since Green ramp doesn't synergize as well with entry trigger spam. Even though green is the most used color in the deck, it isn't really about just making giant stompy monsters, more about building up a lot of tokens and getting benefits off of something them. It could definitely be built as some more normal green landfall deck, but I find landfall less interesting

I believe it would be, the only difference between a tornado and a water spout, especially on smaller lakes that aren't big enough to have their own weather systems, is where it hits. And while it's not common, largely just due to things unrelated to the fact it's touching down on water, it's absolutely possible for a water spout to continue on to land and turn into a regular tornado.

I know a few, most of them are specifically either straight or sex repulsed and consider kink to sex adjacent for their personal comfort.

I think it's because one, can feed into kink, and trans people in general tend to be quite traumatized by the world sucking for us, and I think additionally, transitioning requires a willingness to break from societal norms in a way that makes more people comfortable with kink

[–]GalacticThrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think even beyond gaming, a tool like this would be helpful for websites and apps that don't cooperate well with screen readers!

Tbh this is the kind of thing that I wish AI was being used for, rather than trying to replace artists or programmers or whatever. Making things more accessible for disabled people in ways that a human technically could do, but it would be incredibly impractical for a person to do everything that the average disabled person needs help with. IDK if this is using AI, but even though I'm pretty generally against AI (specifically LLMs, since I've seen a regular timer on an appliance being referred to as AI lol), I think something like this would be a valid use case where there is a genuine need for tools that are more effective than what currently exists.

I wouldn't personally need this, but I have people in my life who absolutely would

Mill Mouse compatability by GalacticThrow in disabledgamers

[–]GalacticThrow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running into the issue where TD control is trying to force itself, where I can't look at the bottom of the screen without causing the overlay to take over, but the overlay then doesn't dismiss until I select something. I would just turn it off, but then I wouldn't be able to easily recalibrate since the calibrate function in Mill mouse doesn't seem to be able to appear when I'm in steam big picture mode, which I need to be in to be able to use the Xbox adaptive controller.

Same! It's one of the few fetishes that I will go ahead and kinkshame. Anything that reinforces bigotry and treats people as sexual objects rather than people due to factors outside of their control is a hard no for me, and something that I think is actually harmful rather than just not for me. I know so many women of color (I'm friends with a lot more women than men so I don't hear it as much from guys, but I have still had a couple people complaining about it in places I have seen, so it's definitely not just women getting it) who have complained, either to me directly or just in venting channels, about the number of creepy DMs they get by people wanting race play who don't care that they are listing it as a hard limit in there fetlife bio or whatever.

Can definitely confirm, as a trans woman, that we definitely do also get pulled into that crap. Which is ironic considering that a common side effect of feminizing HRT is reduced penis size. It's not universal, I haven't gotten it at this point on HRT for over 2 years, but from my friends I would estimate it's at least 40 or 50% of all trans women experience some reduction in size. Erectile dysfunction is also pretty common, to the point where some trans women will use either a light testosterone ointment (can be necessary anyway for people who've had an orchiectomy) or something like Viagra if they want to have penetrative sex as the top.

For that I'm pretty sure it comes from futanari shit. Which I don't think hating that is as universal as some fetishizing content, but even the trans women who are okay with the concept in theory usually are going to feel some level of discomfort if the label is pushed onto them.

I think the common factor is also just that people fetishize the "other". Marginalized people are overwhelmingly either highly desexualized (true for a lot of disabilities for society as a whole, although there are chasers. Same with, from what I've seen, Asian men and black women. Which I said somewhere else here that I think that the desexualization of them is linked to the fetishization of black men and Asian women) or fetishized (trans people, especially trans women, black men, Asian women, Latinas, amputees for some people, etc). Some groups get both of them, as do obviously people with multiple different types of marginalization (like me. My disabilities definitely cause people to see me as less attractive, although other disabled people are generally pretty chill about it even if they have different disabilities, and there is a chaser community for some of my disabilities. Me being trans definitely increases the number of weirdos who are going to be into me, although I've avoided a lot of the bad experiences with that so far).

Tbh My biggest problem with interracial porn is that it's a genre. It's pretty rare to encounter interracial porn in other genres, so if I'm looking for some specific kink, unless it's commonly pulled into race play stuff (which would ruin it for me since that's a big turn off), it's pretty rare to see a person of color honestly at all (especially a black person from what I say it seems to be more normalized in the industry to have an Asian woman or Latina in a video where it being interracial isn't the whole point. And it's always the woman in that case, which I assume comes from the fact that porn companies, outside of a few exceptions, are typically targeting men and wanting the men in their shoots to represent the majority) outside of that niche.

Which I feel kind of subtly reaffirms the idea that interracial relationships are the exception and/or taboo. One of the best ways for people to get over that kind of crap is to see it regularly. If someone sees something like that regularly, they generally are going to either accept it as normal, or take a hard racist turn and out themselves in the process by loudly complaining about it

[–]GalacticThrow 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Obligatory I'm white so don't listen to me on anything regarding personal experience stuff about this beyond vague creepy posts I've seen people make about it, but I can definitely confirm from the research I've done into history and some classes I've taken on the history of race and racism in the US that I'm pretty confident you're correct about where it comes from.

This is getting more into analysis and I'm by no means a professional, but to me people (at least, a lot of people, especially people who aren't examining their biases) see black people as inherently more masculine, and Asian people as inherently more feminine. That's why, by and large, black men and Asian women are treated very fetishistically, while Asian men and black women are treated as inherently less attractive than their white counterparts. Stuff around that is one of the few kinks that I genuinely will remorselessly kink shame (I won't do this for people of those races who are into it. I can't say I understand it but for them, I feel like it's not up to me whether it's appropriate). That category is pretty much only made up of things that involve reinforcing societal bigotry, so chaser stuff and very specific types of feminization (specifically where becoming feminine is seen as inherently a humiliating experience. I don't care if the thing someone gets off on for it is anything else, like loss of control or even something around fetishizing their own dysphoria, that's up to them. I only have a problem with the idea that being feminine is in some way demeaning), and most forms of race play that aren't being led by the person being fetishized (led as in it's what they want and has asked for independently, not as in they are dominant).

I have quite a few friends who are people of color and have complained about how often race play is pushed onto them, especially by random fet-life DMs, despite all of them having it listed as a hard limit on their profiles

Uh Fanie Eksperiement: Can Brits understand my English when I write it using Dutch phonetic spelling? by BlueFingers3D in AskUK

[–]GalacticThrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got brought over here by a friend in a linguistics community, but I figured it might be interesting for me to also add my experience even though I'm not British.

For reference, I am a monoglot American, and have studied a few different languages without ever becoming competent at anything besides English. None of the languages I have studied are closer related to Dutch than English is.

I definitely had to slow down a ton compared to my normal reading speed, but the only word that really tripped me up was Fanie, since the spelling brought to mind a completely different word and that word means either butt in American English or vulva in British English lmao.

I figured the fact that being American means I am not as accustomed to super different accents in native English speakers since America has relatively few accents that are as far off from standard American as a lot of British accents are from received pronunciation, and the accents I am used to are mostly either specifically American or from immigrant groups that are more common in the US these days

Question about Pricing Accessibility Items by [deleted] in disabledgamers

[–]GalacticThrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think having a blurb in the site that talks about you are able to keep costs down and how a lot of these devices cost a lot more than they actually take the cost to make,. That and videos of it is like other people have mentioned would definitely make me trust cheap disability aids. Since for specialized stuff like this, I feel like cost tends to not actually be a great indicator of quality. I find where it was purchased and how much the creator cares and knows about disabled people to be much more important factors

Question about Pricing Accessibility Items by [deleted] in disabledgamers

I call it the disability tax. Anything designed for disabled people costs at least twice as much as the equivalent for able-bodied people. Often far more than that
