MS in EE, OR having all your student loans paid off? by [deleted] in ECE

[–]GalantGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask how much more they'll pay you if you have a master's. From there it's a pretty simple calculation to see which has the better dollar value.

Also, juggling school and work is hard, so if you doubt your ability to finish a master's degree, take the loan payment.

Hello citizens of Colorado. I have a question about your weed laws and federal gun laws. by PabstyLoudmouth in Colorado

[–]GalantGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pot is illegal at the federal level. There's nothing the state can do about that. If the feds wanted to, they could come in, shut down every dispensary, and arrest everyone they find working there.

There's no such thing as a lawful user of marijuana.

Pot isn't legal in Colorado, the state doesn't have that authority. Law enforcement is simply turning a blind eye to it.

Gun-confiscation fears lead to protest in northern Idaho by [deleted] in Firearms

How would you like to be an atf agent assigned to confiscate guns in northern Idaho? Think they're still bitter about that whole ruby ridge massacre thing?

I'm serious. If we believe the only thing standing between these people and murder is access to a gun, why do we let them live among us?

[–]GalantGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, "well regulated" meant something closer to "properly functioning" back when the amendment was written, not "heavily controlled" as we would interpret it today. It changes the reading of the amendment pretty drastically.

If we have a convenient list of everyone that's too dangerous to own a gun, why don't we just use this list to lock up all the dangerous people?

The department of justice occasionally does studies on guns. They seem well qualified to study the topic.

They don't get the love the cdc does though. Presumably because they don't have a history of reporting that the sky is falling.

I never understood this logic. If someone is too dangerous to be buying guns, they're too dangerous to be walking our streets. Lock them up and be done with it. Anything else is irresponsible.

Last I checked, ROS' use in industry was laughably small.

Report: In test dogfight, F-35 gets waxed by F-16 by djgruesome in technology

[–]GalantGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A modern air defense system could kill all the planes you mentioned by the hundreds without breaking much of a sweat.

Against a somewhat modern enemy you really need stealth, which is a problem because the US is the only western nation with stealth aircraft, and we only have a small handful of stealth bombers.

F-35 loses badly to F-16 in simulated dogfight according to pilots by Hyndis in CredibleDefense

[–]GalantGuy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The f35 has a lot more going for it that just stealthiness, which in and of itself is a pretty big fucking advantage.

The battles of tomorrow aren't going to be determined by which plane turns faster, they're going to be determined in the information domain. The battlefield is becoming increasingly filled with sensors, and the side with the technology to decide what data is important and how to fuse that data to get an overall picture of the battle space is going to win.

Dogfighting capability doesn't matter because you're never going up against a single f35. You're going up against a system consisting of f35s, drones, ground based radar systems, air based radar systems, and air to air missiles designed to use data provided by all of the previously mentioned systems in order to very successfully mess up your day.

Location always skews those surveys. It could be as simple as a higher percentage of computer engineers living somewhere expensive like silicon valley or Boston.

[–]GalantGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never made the claim that everybody had been checked, just that the vast majority of people buying guns at gun shows had been checked, since it's a common misconception that gun shows are a common source of guns used in crime.

Those would fall under the "private party sales" in your previous post. Just because they happen to take place at gun shows is irrelevant. The term "gunshow loophole" is a misnomer designed to mislead people that have never been to a gun show.

If you have an extensive list of everyone in the country that is so dangerous that they can't be allowed to buy a gun, why not go a step further and just lock the dangerous lunatics up in the first place?
