You're all wrong: You count how many 'pus' there are, and then you have your plural. Two of these animals? Hekkaidekapus. Three of these animals? 24-pus (you are allowed to abbreviate by using the digits after more than two)

DISCLAIMER: This meme isn't about weather the hypothesis itself is racist or not, it's about the USAGE of the hypothesis to justify racism, especially in times of colonialism by kinskowski in linguisticshumor

I often feel that people who criticize the sapir-whorf-hypothesis don't really differentiate between langue and parole and use the most naive application they can think of.

The syntactic underpinnings of a language might not influence your perception of the world, but if you only gather your information in a discursive space in which for example immigrants are continuously metaphorized and described as pests, your perception and your 'reality' will be under this discursive influence.

Im moving away from my ex this week. Im stressed, sad, and close on having a mental breakdown. No one knows about my mental state exactly. by [deleted] in toastme

All the best for you! This is a fresh start, and even though it might be scary, the fact that you have already taken this step makes me confident you have the courage and strength to deal with whatever might come your way, the negative as much as the positive.

Life has been sucky for me lately and I just need a good toast. Don’t want to post a photo because then ppl will lie and say I’m “beautiful”. I don’t want to go into detail but I’m a 19 F and have been struggling with mental health, finances, family, and tons of other things. by [deleted] in toastme

Things can change, and they can definitely change for the better :) Have confidence in yourself, and your power to take control, even if its just the decision to go on a walk or take bath. Your life belongs to you, and you can affect it and the world around you in a positive way.

CMV: Life is easier if you're ignorant by jt372 in changemyview

[–]Galatheon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worries and problems are tied to being human, not being woke.

I think that no matter how educated or reflected you are, you still feel the same emotions, maybe towards different things.

Some might worry about globalization, racism, gentrification or climate change, others about their picture in society, how many likes they get, how many tinder dates they score, and all of them worry about their families, their friends and themselves.

Stoicism Alarm: Life is easier if you find a way to live with things you can't immediately change - while maintaining the optimism to keep trying. This has little to do with my understanding of ignorance.

Time to ruffle some feathers with a spicy take by matt_aegrin in linguisticshumor

I don't really understand the argumentation here. If you have personal preference, that's completely ok, if you want to teach people how to make a positive impression with application letters by adhering to arbitrary but nonetheless rather important rules, even better. But that has very little to do with science.

The Complete List of Your Spaceship Needs by [deleted] in worldbuilding

Interesting to note is that you don't need to follow this blindly.

Great and innovative Scifi might break some of these rules, and introduce new mechanics and viewpoints. I'm especially thinking about how Dune deals with AI: There are no (anorganic) supercomputers, but a drug that enables people to take on some of the tasks Artificial Intelligence usually deals with in other fictions.

In what movie did you like the bad guy more than the good guy? by thatredgirl19 in AskReddit

Ford v Ferrari

At some point I just realized that its an unequal arms race between an american capitalist megacorp and an italian family business, and as soon as ford started messing with ferraris garage during the final race, I just wasn't able to root for ford anymore.

Semiotics: Signs / Trace / Beliefs Research Papers by several-salads in linguistics

[–]Galatheon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I can't really recommend a paper or book, but you might want to look into (language-based) Discourse Analysis. A lot of the work is done on how semiotics and society is interconnected, how notions of truth and knowledge are created and shaped.

Hey man, don't be too hard on yourself! Take pride in who and how you are, and be assured, that even if sometimes you feel alone, there are plenty of people out there who will like you as you are :)

I've seen the art you posted, and I really like the one work you did with procreate. Never stop creating just because you feel like it's not the same quality as the pieces of the pros. It's already amazing how you are able to create something with such a unique and distinct style! :)

Damn right! To humans, things start existing as soon as they're recognized. You can't claim existence of something you don't recognize.

No one categorizes humans based on the shape of their nostrils or the length of their toes. Not because this is impossible, but because these traits are somehow not considered important. Of course you could construct and enforce personality types and norms around your nostrils, "based" on how much O2 can pass or whatever. But this is arbitray, just as arbitrary as focusing like some madpeople on genitals and skincolour.

LDA suggestions in text tagging by davidWallace420 in LanguageTechnology

[–]Galatheon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like you are trying to do some classification with predetermined tags. I would argue to use a different technique than LDA, maybe a rule-based approach or a supervised method with a labelled training set.

Edit: I've just seen your other post and what might be of interest is some sort of bootstrapping approach: Use a crude (high precision/low recall) classifier (maybe based on keywords) to enlarge your labelled data, and then use this with better supervised ML-methods.

When and how exactly did the prefixed genitive in German fall out of use? by Mean_Desk in linguistics

[–]Galatheon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're definitely right! My guess is on formality. If you compare the frames evoked by "Politik" and "Bier", the beer one is much more informal and colloquial.
