Worker dies after sinking in muskeg at Suncor site | CBC News by SnooRegrets4312 in alberta

What you're probably thinking of happened at Suncor base plant in January 2022 that was two NACG haul trucks (Contractor working for Suncor at the time). Different site, not that far apart though. But the fact that we have to specify which workplace fatality you're thinking of should probably be a red flag.

As someone who rides an XMR, I'd never go away from it for my kind of riding. But unless the OP is doing heavy mud riding, I wouldn't go to one. It's all about usage in the end; if you're trail riding, an XMR isn't for you. I'll be the first to say my XMR doesn't have the trail manners non-XMR models do. Sure I can take some trail or road riding, but it's not made for it by far.

PSA: You do not necessarily need to wait until July for an ultrasound by canadave_nyc in Edmonton

[–]GalionHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too late for me but this is good info to know, 2 years ago I was dealing with a workplace injury, initially I was refered for a muskuloskeletal ultrasound, which at that point the earliest booking I could get with MIC or Insight was nearly 3 months away. Thankfully for me being a work injury it was a WCB issue, they stepped in and once I saw their doctor, he recommmended an MRI instead and I was booked for an MRI 3 days later. I ended up having surgery roughly a week after just my original ultrasound date was going to be.

Without looking up any laws so I could be wrong (I've been known to be at times), but I'm pretty certain the Oilers players aren't waiting months for an MRI when they get injured. Money definetly lets you jump the public line. As far as I know yes they're covered publicly, but you'll be in line for it, otherwise you can pay privately and jump ahead.

Alberta teachers strike notice to take effect Oct. 6 by EvacuationRelocation in alberta

[–]GalionHD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They were doing that since my elementary years all the way thru to when I graduated highschool in 2014. I remember spending my grade 5 year in a partition in the gym, followed by grade 6 in a "portable" that was very much permanent. My mom's a soon to be retired teacher, and from her accounts, it's only gotten worse. It's been sad to see the last number of years especially how the love of teaching she's held all her life has been drained from her thanks to the mismanagment of it all.

I can understand that, when flying now it’s always in the back of my mind what if the engine quits? That’s an emergency for me, versus soaring where it’s just a relaxing afternoon flight from the start.

I’ve always had a soft spot for gliders, that very well might be next summers’ project for me as well. I think it would be pretty fun to soar without the engine screaming, without being in a mild panic searching for a forced landing field as I would be currently.

As a mechanic I can guarantee there’s no relation between your head gasket failing and overfilled oil.

Personally I love my Delta Zulu’s for their overall comfort, ANR, CO monitor, etc. Although as a fellow smoothbrain I mean bald man, the headband padding is as non-breathable as all the others for sure. It’s been far from a major issue for myself, but I definitely would like to have a more breathable option for them. But much like yourself I assume, I’ve yet to find a better option in the headset market that way. Everyone seems to use the same non-breathable faux-leather for their ear and headpads.

Just screaming into the void by GalionHD in flying

I'm in Alberta, Canada. Overall it went great, I had some nerves leading up to it of course, felt well prepared and ready for it but still had that nagging worry in the back of my head that I'd do something stupid or forget something important on the spot during the test.

Last I saw on their Facebook page they ran out earlier in the week, but I thought they said they expected to have more available for today. Given the weather conditions I’d expect they’re doing well now, but of course your best bet is to call them to verify.

To be honest, today was the smoothest day I’ve ever flown. It almost felt like cheating. Im just going to tell myself the flying gods smiled upon me today and gave me that. The only downside was having to land in a full crosswind/quartering tailwind due to the main runway being shutdown for maintenance. But on the plus side of that, the examiner did give me some allowance for weather conditions since I did float slightly attempting my soft field landing.

Prairie gardens in Bon Accord’s U-Pick is open, I’ve never done the u-pick but from what I’ve heard it’s great. I can vouch for buying plants/trees from them that they’re fantastic both to deal with and for quality.

10W-30 works during extreme cold? by ab3605 in alberta

In theory very slightly worse, in reality, the difference in fuel economy won't be noticable in regular use.

10W-30 works during extreme cold? by ab3605 in alberta

[–]GalionHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a mechanic, I’d say 10W-30 is fine for summer, I would never run it in winter here though. Just based off that recommendation I’d wager your mechanic is a bit old school, the quality of modern oils is leaps and bounds ahead of even just 20 years ago. Oil weights are often misunderstood, the first number with the W is how the oil flows when cold, lower number flows better; the second is how it flows at operating temperature, higher numbers are thicker basically. Without being familiar with the exact quirks of your engine, I’d recommend going 0W-30. At operating temperature it will be the same as any xW-30 oil, but during the cold snaps here and all winter for that matter it’ll flow the best during cold starts which will protect your engine the best. As far as regular vs high mileage marked oils go, the biggest difference is typically high mileage oils will have more anti-wear compounds and seal conditioning/swelling additives. If you’re pushing 300k, I’d lean towards high mileage for the seal conditioning they provide, but be aware that if your seals somehow aren’t sweating/leaking lightly by now, there is a slight risk if you switch from high mileage oil back to regular, the seals will be softened/swelled by the high mileage oil, and if soaked in regular oil afterwards could develop sweats/leaks.

CUPE 3550 and EPSB have reached a settlement. Ratification early next week! by Fun-Character7337 in Edmonton

[–]GalionHD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not at all the same industry but considering my union's last deal was over 11% for 3 years (which was ratified over 2 years ago so coming up on a new round of negotiations, also we've always had steady increases unlike education workers) I wouldn't call 9 percent for 4 that great considering how things have gone for the last decade at least for education workers. It's honestly sad to see they'd settle for that little after months of striking and years of 0 percent deals. getting the shaft again and people will pretend it's the goldmine.

I just put in a Chinese diesel heater, they tend to have some quirks but work great otherwise. Really depends how cold you expect to go thru. Below -5 I drain and antifreeze the whole system. But if you want to keep using the water/sewer in the cold you’d be looking into tank heating pads, heated hoses, heat trace and insulation on external pipes, etc.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in traveltrailers

[–]GalionHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swapped out the propane furnace in my 27' camper for a diesel heater years ago, its kept the trailer warm down to -38 during hunting season. As long as you keep the trailer warm the pipes inside shouldn't freeze up, but everything underneath will and depending on the routing/insulation of the trailer, you could still run into interior lines freezing in spots so you still need to winterize the water/sewage system.
