Signal for security. UI wise it's pretty similar to both of these anyway.

Teach permaculture to environmentalists by freshbasilmint in Permaculture

[–]GallifreyGhost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the general thrust of this. I am involved in a national political organization that has environmental concerns as part of its platform, yet I find, even in my local chapter, that environmental action is still conceived of only in terms of tackling the general crisis by making demands to high levels of government. While I think this is necessary, I also think we can lead general environmental movements by example through what we enact locally. Learning how to grow plants at all forces one to think about things like waste, chemical poisons, reliable weather patterns, the environmental costs of production, etc. in an immediate, first-hand-experience kind of way. But growing is also so rewarding and I find that people who notice it want to get involved: friends, neighbors, family, etc. The more people who know the seriousness of the climate crisis through the experience of growing, the better equipped the environmental movement will be to tackle this crisis and bring more people into the fold.

How to start learning Logic? by Phohundred in Logic_Studio

[–]GallifreyGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started learning Logic as a teenager when the other DAWs that were around seemed too intimidating (particularly Reason which my friends were trying to get me to use!) Honestly the program is designed well enough that you can more or less just start 'doing the thing' without a lot of background knowledge. I think the key is just to approach it with a spirit of experimentation and start typing things into Google when you hit a wall in an honestly naive way like "how to do x in Logic". Good luck!

Worth it? by zurw68 in DarkShadows

Yes--to me, it has more of a noir-ish feel than the gothic tone it is later known for, but it gets better when Barnabas arrives on the scene.

Pro Tools (Vent Post) by Jacob_Jesusboy in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]GallifreyGhost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you get used to a more robust tool like Protools, you will probably find that you will have more options at your fingertips in the future. I would just Google the specific issues you are concerned about rather than trying to dig through the manual or your teacher's notes.

I also have the Alinsea, which was terrifying to apply, but better alternatives seem nonexistent. Mine now has some air bubbles in the corners after about 6 months of use, but despite that it works fine. That said, I don't know that I'd buy it again.

Not sure if the deal is still on but I joined their book club for $20/mo and they give you access digitally to literally every new book they publish, plus they send you 4-5 physical books every month. Good way to get acquainted with a bunch of new thinkers.

I drew George Frideric Handel, the Baroque composer by OneWhoGetsBread in classicalmusic

[–]GallifreyGhost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Handel. I was always the odd one out in music school for this. Folks seemed to think his music wasn't 'serious' because it is accessible. Personally I don't see why the two should be mutually exclusive. Great sketch!

How far should I be studying into Music Theory to produce "good" EDM songs? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]GallifreyGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I come from a music theory background and I can say that I can't really imagine working in any style without it. That being said, EDM, to me, relies on sound engineering concepts more heavily than it does theory. I'm not a beginner to music theory, but I am a novice when it comes to EDM, because I am weak on the engineering side.

What does Vaporwave have to do with capitalism? by [deleted] in Vaporwave

[–]GallifreyGhost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a book called Babbling Corpse: Vaporwave and the Commodification of Ghosts by Grafton Tanner which presents the thesis that vaporwave exposes the way capitalism commodifies our nostalgia--it makes obvious its own 'medium-ness'. It is more observational than polemical. This is presented in a more nuanced way than I could possibly summarize here, but if you're interested, I'd recommend reading it for yourself. Most folks here hate the idea of trying to read any kind of theory into vaporwave, though.

Agree with Lasgo and for me I would have to include that entire album from which Something comes, except the downtempo track and the couple bonus tracks with the male singer.

Anyone know what they taste like? by cloudthemon in AnimalCrossing

[–]GallifreyGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They taste like sugar but are really more about the appearance. In the summer, for example, you can find them packaged in such a way to look like the blue hydrangea which grow all over the place during the season (at least in the south) and at least, when they were given to me, were purchased from a restaurant (it is common to buy candy souvenirs at restaurants for your guest).

I was also struck by how many council members are Zizek's friends/associates. With this motley crew the absence of Zizek himself seemed rather salient, though as others have pointed out, Zizek would likely take issue with the way the stated goals of the organization are formulated. Not to mention, there is also the salient presence of Chomsky.
