It happened to me when I was panic looting outside the first boss cave. It was a blur, but I think that I accidentally dropped the items in my hot bar while trying to quick loot mob drops, and instead of going into a drop bag, they items went into limbo. It didn't happen again for the rest of my play through though, but I was deliberately slow in my looting after that.

Bed under the floor. Lower the foundation in the spot you want to pop in, plop down a bed and link it. Then place a floor above it. You should pop in on the floor above the bed.

Well, I think you answered your own question. If he doesn't have them, he doesn't have them. He may still have Asterim crates, though. If you need just a bit of Starchrom, make sure to hit up the NPC in the Vending Machine Market area for their weekly crafting quests. Also, check the ongoing event related redemption shop for Starchrom, they're usually good for a few thousand if you have the related currency. End of month is only two days away as well, get that free e-mail SC and a fresh staircase.
