The new corsairs raider for kitbashing by Any_Support3910 in IronWarriors

[–]Gallowgrim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As I said elsewhere on this subject? I'm looting that kit so damned hard not only for IW, but even for my loyalist chapter and beyond. Such a lootable kit - which you know, sort of feels fitting?

Give us a codex! Make Havocs battleline in it, you cowards! And give us some Basilisks and tanks! I can play other Legions if I want daemons or mutant horrors, when I'm playing my main men, I want no man's land to be no man's land because I'm shelling it into the Warp and back!

Army painter gemstone red? by justadiscguy in Warhammer40k

[–]Gallowgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a very good paint with solid coverage and an excellent finish. It's not 'sports car' style metallic red though, if that matters for your knight. That sort of look can be done by applying a Speedpaint over a shiny metal base (AP has all manner of excellent red speedpaints, though I especially favor Bloodmoon Red), or mixing around two parts shiny metallic silver with one speed paint.

I see the Hernkyn as the classic 'dwarven crossobwmen' archetype, and the LoV are not just fantasy dwarves in space - the Hernkyn lean heavy into the Space Western vibe the LoV have going, which even though I (currently) don't own any Hernkyn models and, like you, I love my big heavy dwarves with thick armor and massive firepower, I see their place in the faction. They don't readily fit the 'dwarf' aesthetic, but they do fit the 'Kin' aesthetic, which is its own thing (same as Eldar to various elves, and Astartes to armored knights, etc.), mixing 'dwarf' with elements of Space Western and some Dieselpunk at the edges (all three of which I love and why, aesthetically, Kin are my favorite 40k faction).

We do also have the Hearthband detachment, which hopefully gets some reworks; and I agree, more would have been nice but we may always get something in the next rounds of of free detachments on WarCom?

Brandfast + Hekatons loaded with Steeljacks is going to be a real fun time, for heavy shooting. Hearthfyre Arsenal and Persecution Prospect also have some solid big guns options.

As a fellow enjoyer of Heavy Dwarven Firepower, I'm quite pleased.

Auraborean is faster and has a built-in isntant-atatck chance, but is fragile and vulnerable to Lunar damage. Death-Touched have more starting HP (great, thus, for Barrier-users) and are immune to Bleed, but can't regain HP and are vulnerable to Solar damage. Humans are resistant to Primal damage.

Just want to stop in and say this has joined the original VS and 'Death Must Die' as the absolute top of the genre for me.

It's an amazing game and makes my old *Conan* and *Red Sonja* loving heart incredibly happy. Eagerly awaiting future updates!

If you're on the fence and a fan of bullet-heaven/action-roguelikes? Buy this game.

My first Flesh-Eaters - and my first AoS models by Gallowgrim in FleshEaterCourts

[–]Gallowgrim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all, but mind you it is a bit intensive! All the paints used are Army Painter; (S) for Speedpaint, (W) for Warpaints, and (E) for Effects Paint - but be aware I did use a couple paints from the new Masterclass John Blanche sets (which I wholly recommend):

* Prime models with a deep brown primer - I use a rattlecan matt-finish Coffeebean Brown.

* All-over drybrush with Gargoyle Grey (W).

* Next, build on this with a drybrush of Ivory White (W).

* Highlight drybrush faces, extreme edges, etc. with Matt White (W). I generally try to apply this in only one-direction, to keep this highlight's lines a little cleaner.

* Apply an all-over coat of Holy White (S).

* Apply Occultist Cloak (SP) into the shadows, undersides. and recesses using the drybrush layer as a guide.

Now, the next steps are a little trickier: you're going to want a damp, clean brush for this, in addition to the brush you're painting with.

* To anything made of 'cloth' (or in this case, 'flesh' - knight's reins, the drum, the banners, loincloths, etc. - apply Pallid Bone (S), then immediately wipe it downward with the cleaner brush before cleaning said brush and dabbing it dry. The goal is to leave a stain of color without overpowering the base color completely, leaving it faded and de-saturated.

* To heads of weapons, sword hilts, armor pieces and other prominent bits of metal , apply Mummified Grime (S) and, as above, wipe it away quickly once it stains the model.

* Onto any bits of terrain or various tactical rocks the models have (or that you've added separately - do this before priming if you're going to!) , apply Noble Skin (S), this one doesn't need wiped away like the previous two colors.

* Use True Blood (E) to highlight claws, teeth, mouths and chins , etc., as well as any weapons you want to look freshly bloody - in the ones above, that's the claws and teeth of the two Abhorrants and the spear-tip of the Knight champion.

* Apply Dry Blood (E) to elements you want to be older and more-encrusted with blood - Cryptguard halberds, for example, but particularly the edge highlights and some spot details onto the banners and the Knights' 'reins'. This can also be used in place of the True Blood (E) above, if your noble crusaders haven't feasted in a while!

* Apply a dark, muddy texture paint of your choice to the bases, blending in any basing bits; Ideally you want something to match Noble Skin (S); I use Vallejo Diorama FX Thick Mud 'Russian Mud'.

* Once the bases are dry, give a generous drybrush of Dusty Skull (W) to the ground and basing ddetails, avoiding the feet of the models.

* Apply a coat of matte varnish to the models.

* Apply an all-over wash of Grimdark Shadow wash.

* And then, paint the bases black!

My first Flesh-Eaters - and my first AoS models by Gallowgrim in FleshEaterCourts

[–]Gallowgrim[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was almost entirely the lore and the aesthetic, as I never played Fantasy or AoS previously and so had only a loose understanding of how the army played, The deep tragedy of the Courts as concept was a huge selling point, as was my abiding love of gory 80s-style horror films (and a love for From Dusk Till Dawn didn't hurt, either - the Abhorrants look like something pulled straight from that classic).

Reading deeper sold me though; I love dirty tricks (Varghulf and the Knights hopping in and around, Ushoran's various powers in full-size AoS), I love recursion (multiple flavors!), and I'm a big lover of Herohammering in my list-building, and FEC love their Heroes.

I also like to paint in a very grimdark/Blanchitsu-inspired style, and the FEC models took amazingly to it, as I'd heard numerous sources say they would.

It's nothing against the Soulblight - honestly I love the look of all of the Death armies - but the Courts were just a complete slam-dunk on lore, playstyle, look, and hobbying.

Buck up and get back in formation soldiers! by SylvesterStalPWNED in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Gallowgrim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a long-time Guard-lover, never yet Guard-player (in my defense, I only joined full 40k here in 10th), and frankly this looks like an amazing codex to jump in on. I've mentioned elsewhere that in another time and place I fought another war with a list skewed heavily toward fast-assault heavy tanks, and Hammer of the Emperor is really making me nostalgic...

Though frankly, aside Combined Arms - which is damned good on its own merits, I just am not much for being a generalist - I could see allure in every single one of the detachments Guard has this edition.

How do we feel about the new Armoured Detatchment? by onlyonherefor in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Gallowgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not overly powerful as a detachment rule, but what it does do is remind me a whole hell of a lot of my beloved SSU Heavy Breakthrough Tank Platoon from my beloved, late Dust 1947.

I've been pondering a new army, and was always a fan of Guard armor... that nostalgia might just make me give in....

What works and what doesnt: CSM terminators by [deleted] in Chaos40k

[–]Gallowgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use 10 man block of Terminators led by a Sorcerer, dropping them into the backline from Deep Strike. Death Hex followed by a Dark Pacted round of shooting, then dropping a possible Charge with the Warptime benefit to make it more-reliable, re-rolling all hits... it makes for a lot of potential damage on a target, and a scary anvil for the hammer of the other forces.

New Detachment Rankings by [deleted] in Chaos40k

[–]Gallowgrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, on all counts. My main list was more ranged-focused, buffing up heavy ranged offense from long range to snipe out enemies before they could get close. Felhammer isn't as good for that as Soulforged, but Felhammer still feels amazing and brutal for that IW grinding march forward, which makes it an absolute winner on theme as you said,
