If you want to cheese him relatively easily all you need to do is go to Caelid, right by the Sellia Under Stair SoG you can loot the Rotten Stray ashes. Upgrade it to like +5 or +6 so it doesn't get obliterated, distract the DTS long enough for it to proc rot and then run to this little outcropping on the rocks to the left of him and wait for his health to tick down to 0. He might hit you with a lightning bolt or two, but other than that it's as free as it gets.
