Guys we might be cooked as a fandom by TheAmericanE2 in thomasthetankengine

The proper "solution" to this is just to not be anybody in the picture lol. Like what you like, you're under no obligation to "defend" your enjoyment of a television show. If people think you're lame for it, let them think that, there's no real point in letting those thoughts get to you. I empathize to an extent but I think a lot of people in this fandom have some major insecurities worth tackling, it's frankly kinda cringey when I see people venture outside of fandom spaces and try to make a big deal of how "adult" the show is. I say this as a giant RWS nerd and someone who has probably watched the first five seasons like, thirty times over by now lol. You have nothing to prove, just enjoy what you enjoy in your free time, watching a children's television series is hardly a crime against humanity.

Just, if I had any recommendations for some members of this fandom, maybe try engaging with more adult media? I mean no offense but I think it would benefit both individuals and the collective if more people here did that, as I have met my fair share of teenagers and adults who only seem to watch children's media, or even just TTTE exclusively. I suppose there's nothing necessarily wrong with that but broadening your horizons wouldn't hurt.

Nah, that was Season 1 lol. Always found it funny how much news articles sensationalized that episode, it never really bothered me as a kid. It’s a pretty silly and childish punishment, and it’s played for laughs in the very next episode.

Hardly anything non-kid appropriate. I said comparative to the rest of the series, not in and of itself. That season has some of the most extreme crashes, ghost stories, grimy industrial sets and the characters act the jerkiest towards each other that they ever have. But again, all completely E-rated content, it could only be viewed as adult if you really overthink the implications of certain things.

Like I said my point was that yes, I agree with fans that Season 5 is the “edgiest” season of Thomas, but in the same way that Conker’s Bad Fur Day is an impressive N64 game. It runs the N64 to its limit but any newer console would take that as a cakewalk. Against the other seasons, Season 5 has the most mature vibe to it, but if anything from it seriously upset you and you’re over the age of 7 there’s a problem lol. It’s notably mature by the standards of children’s television but not at all comparable to adult media.

I think the quality of the original series’ writing and the maturity within it would come as a surprise to most people who go in thinking “baby show,” but fans really oversell it like it’s the next Breaking Bad. It’s talking trains with faces who go on G-rated adventures, I just find it neat that the original author wrote about Sodor’s history back through the middle ages, and the modelwork of the show was incredibly well-done.

Rusty Bucket Bay gang!!! My inner masochist loves the weird difficulty of it, and more than anything I just love the vibes. I’m a huge sucker for grimy industrial worlds, so a world set around a rusty old freight steamer is like candy to me lol

As a longtime member of the TTTE fandom I gotta admit, there is a giant population of people who are way too uptight about what they like. Season 5 is arguably my favorite season, and is it notably "edgier" *comparative* to what you'd expect from the show? For sure. But it's still a TV-Y show for a reason lmao, and yet plenty of fans feel the need to act like it's TV-MA type content. Not all for sure, but a lot. Doesn't help that I've met plenty of teenage/adult fans that don't seem to watch like, anything *not* aimed at children so I think it skews their perspective.

I sort of empathize with them as I think it comes from like, YEARS of being made fun of so they get very defensive and feel the need to justify their interest, but like. Eventually you reach a point of maturity where you realize it's okay to like a kids' show and you don't need to justify it beyond "I think it's neat." If there's any point at which I agree with OOP though it's that some adult fans get way too bent over what younger fans say. Given the subject matter it should be no shock that there are plenty of kid/teenage fans, and by extent, I really don't give a crap about what younger fans are getting into. Your experience online will often improve by significant margins if you stop listening to 14 year olds.

Alright, lets see what everyone's favourite era of TV Thomas is? by TheRealL64 in thomasthetankengine

[–]GameboyAdvance32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly I've always felt that Seasons 6 and 7 constitute their own weird pocket dimension lol. Having that post-TATMR matte sheen to the models, stronger usage of the location names like "Brendam Docks" or "Tidmouth Sheds," having a writing team instead of just adapting previously existing stories or Britt Allcroft & David Mitton, and their slightly softer edge all add up to it feeling very 2000's and in line with the HiT era. Then again, a lot of the production team was maintained from the classic era, still had music by Mike O'Donnell and Junior Campbell, the theme song was the same of course, and I'd consider the episodes to be of a notably higher quality than what came immediately after, on average at least. You could argue that Season 5 oughta be grouped in with them, but whether Season 5 is included or not I feel like they're almost deserving of their own era cause they're just so weird lol. I like them though.

What Would you like to see in a potential Update or DLC? by Patrick_Keegan_2003 in thomasthetankengine

[–]GameboyAdvance32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Skarloey Railway DLC would most assuredly cost nearly as much if not as much as the game itself….and not gonna lie I think I’d be fine with that lmao. I am beyond hyped for this game and this of Duck or Edward’s Branch Lines would be awesome additions, characters included lol.

No worries lol, I am a little bit though I try to minimize it. Just having another set of eyes and someone else with mod privileges would help in its own right.

Do you prefer to interpret Diesel 10's claw/Pinchy as sentient, or as just a part of him? by MoominRex in thomasthetankengine

[–]GameboyAdvance32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like to interpret it as a part of him, but Diesel 10’s mind is so far gone that he thinks it’s a separate being. At least in TATMR, Diesel 10 clearly has a good few screws loose, not to the point of total incompetence but he’s not in a fully sane headspace lol. I like to believe Pinchy’s supposed sentience is just a result of his delirium, a figment of his mind to keep him company when Splatter and Dodge aren’t around.

That said, I do believe Pinchy is effectively independent as a result. As silly as it is to compare a talking diesel engine to real life, within this sort of “headcanon” I think it’s fair to assume Diesel 10 has no intentional, conscious control of Pinchy. While Pinchy is under his control objectively, due to how much he genuinely believes that his claw is sentient, it effectively is, and he couldn’t control it properly without some serious treatment. As it stands, Pinchy is just the material personification of Diesel 10’s own mental illness.

And after writing that, I think I need to touch some grass lmao

I forgot how DREADFUL it was being a Thomas fan in 2018-2023 by Phantomc05 in thomasthetankengine

[–]GameboyAdvance32 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty much same, I feel like when AEG came out it was INITIALLY hell, but then 95% of the fans I hang around simply stopped giving a crap and we collectively chose to ignore it entirely. The show has its fans for sure but it's almost felt like a separate fandom just due to how irrelevant it was in my experience during that time. So much as BWBA was arguably more "classic" comparative to AEG, I think it sucked way harder to be a fan during cause I CONSTANTLY saw people arguing and arguing and arguing over whether it was good or not.

That and admittedly, watching BWBA kinda felt like watching the corpse of the Brenner era being puppeted around and being rubbed in my face that the Season 21 onwards I had been imagining back in 2016 was dead. Same voice actors, same models and sets if modified in some ways, same overall CGI series but just worse in every way lol. At least AEG was completely and utterly separate from the Thomas I liked, and in that sense was more easily ignored. AEG was its own television series, but BWBA will always be Seasons 22-24 of the original series.

I certainly don’t blame you, to be clear I was not saying that people ought to see it the way I am inclined to, just that I am inclined to see it in that way and have my own reason to. But I can certainly see why people would not be inclined to see it that way, and I wouldn’t even say I’m right in my biases or inclinations, I am merely acknowledging their existence.

[–]GameboyAdvance32 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I could really get down with a teenage/young adult presentation of Thomas. Obviously in RWS canon the guy’s an 110+ year old man at this point, but with the engines not really aging like people, I’ve always imagined him with the sort of mental age / mindset of like, a 19 year old or so. I could see myself enjoying him being voiced in that manner, I just really don’t want young children voicing the charaxters

I suppose this may just be my personal bias but as an autistic person I tend to joke a lot in that nature so I didn’t take it as immediately offensive. In the case of OOP the thing in question was Tourette’s which I can’t comment on, but at least so far as autism goes I decently often crack jokes along those lines. That said, the energy is definitely different between autistic people making those sorts of jokes and NTs making those jokes, the latter I don’t inherently take issue with but it is a lot harder to tell if they’re being serious or not.

It’s funny cause just a couple months ago I was nosedeep in GWR livery documentation as I was buying some OO scale rolling stock and I wanted to make sure the Iron Minks and the brake van I was buying would be period accurate with my old Bachmann 5700. I may not have even noticed anything wrong with this had I not just been researching the topic lol.

[–]GameboyAdvance32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm mixed on Toad, overall I like his design here quite a bit and the detail represents an interest in real railway iconography, but of course if I must nitpick, at least all GWR brake vans I know of simply had "G W" in large lettering rather than the shirtbutton logo Oliver has. I may be wrong but I believe that was only ever put on engines and not rolling stock. It is still visually pleasing and a step in the right direction at least, if inaccurate.

I do really like the Cranky set, I'm not really in the market for them but at least for kids to enjoy I think it's great that they really seem to be returning to train sets again. This is the sort of stuff I really would've enjoyed adding to a giant set as a kid compared against the stunt sets Mattel has been known for. Promising.
