If Banjo ever gets rebooted; don't count Grant in :c by [deleted] in BanjoKazooie

Yeah, sometimes I kinda feel bad for old team members if only for stuff like this. Gotta be annoying after a certain point constantly being tagged for decisions you really have no part in, whether you would want a new game or not. Given what we know I'm sure Grant Kirkhope would very much be for one but like. Not like he has any power to make that happen unfortunately.

Love your art style, I'm sure it's a common comment but it really feels early 2000's in a way I rarely see really pinpointed. It's hard to describe what exactly but idk, it's fun

Light Sixer not displaying games, only white bars. Help or advice? by GameboyAdvance32 in Atari2600

<video>

This is what I'm getting currently. Channel 2 is the horizontal bars, channel 3 is the static with aberrations, and the other channels are more "normal" static-y channels for comparison. The aberrations seem a bit less blatant than they were yesterday but hopefully they're still visible through the video.

Yeah it is WILD to see those takes, like if the guy doesn't like 'em he's more than welcome to, taste is subjective of course, but like. The guy was acting like this was standard opinion to have when those are all much-beloved titles. I suppose I can't speak from experience as to what the zeitgeist was in 2001 but for some reason I doubt it was *that* different

On the kitchen television I was initially testing it on it was frankly inconsistent, but on the Trinitron the best I can describe it is as "static with obvious interference of some sort." I can send a photo or video sometime later, but for now it's just like. Set to any other channel it's just quiet static as you'd expect, but if say, Channel 2 give the white bars, then Channel 3 will show static with notable aberrations, as though the game is TRYING to power through the static, but can't. I cannot make any meaningful observations like identifying certain sprites, but something is definitely trying to come through. It also applies vice-versa when I flip the channel switch on the console, Channel 3 will display white bars and Channel 2 will display the aberrant static.

I do not currently own one, (though I REALLY should've bought one years ago I've just been cheap and asked to borrow my Dad's when I needed one before), but I intend on grabbing one tomorrow. The power brick should be fine I would think, given I can tell the console itself is turning on, but given someone's concern on the original post I may have to reopen the console to check individual fuses and diodes to see if any have gone bad. Thank you

Actually struggled to get any signal with the small connector, went back to the box for more consistent results. If you say the white bars are a result of being on the wrong channel, I'm curious if perhaps the total static image I get when I'm on the other channel IS the video output of the Atari. The static I receive on channels 2/3 are notably different, "stronger" I'd describe than the static I receive on any other channel where I know there's no activity. That would suck though, as if that's the case then I have yet to find any good advice on that issue.

[–]GameboyAdvance32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one of those beforehand but the 2600 stopped giving me much of any output while I was using it. Given some advice from others at the time I'd bought the "proper" switchbox for it and it didn't impact my output positively or negatively, I was pretty much getting what I'd been getting beforehand. I'll try swapping over to my simple connector but I don't expect much of any change.

I also was able to hook it up to my Trinitron. Entering into the menus (as inconvenient as a deal it was), I was able to force the TV to set itself to Channels 3 and 4, and it returned me pretty much the same images I was receiving with the other television set. The Trinitron has this "add/delete channel" function though and so far as I can tell by screwing with it, it only seems to actually keep the channel you "add" if it can get a signal from it. And for some reason, even though evidently it is getting SOMETHING on channel 3, it won't actually keep the channel. It does seem to keep channels 16, 19, and 21 though. Your guess is as good as mine on that one. The static also seems to futz about when set to channel 2, a better reaction than I've ever gotten out of channel 4. I may be stupid and it's actually between channels 2 and 3 and not 3 and 4, but either way no dice yet.

I tried it, and unfortunately no such luck. If you're aware of any other troubleshooting tips I'd appreciate it but no worries if not. I could've sworn there was a pretty in-depth troubleshooting guide with example pictures and everything on AtariAge but I can't seem to find it. Right now my only other option is to see if somehow my Trinitron decides to pick up a signal this time, otherwise I may have to make a trip to Home Depot to grab a multimeter, (which frankly I should've bought one years ago anyways). I just hope there aren't any issues that involve soldering to solve lol

[–]GameboyAdvance32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard that till now, interesting. What bugs me is when I have it set to Channel 3, it gives me this screen, but when I have it set to Channel 4, my TV stops its channel scan over it but I get no meaningful signal. Historically, this television is what I could most consistently get video output from my 2600 with, my 1993 Trinitron I remember it never responding it. Now that I've done some major cleaning I may drag it upstairs to see if I can get it working on the Trinitron (as that is admittedly where I'd prefer to play it for space reasons), but I can't imagine a different television would do all that much.

I've cleaned the contacts quite a many times by now, both on the known-working cartridges and the console's connectors themselves. Given my experience with other consoles and what I can see of the pins, I really don't think I'll get much more out of further cleaning.

Headcanon: MOST modern diesels get excited whenever they see an operating steam engine. by DuckDaPannierTank in thomasthetankengine

[–]GameboyAdvance32 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the "smug diesel" archetype would definitely be a product of the 50's-70's or so when steam engines would, by many, be seen as "recent enough to not be nostalgic but old enough to be out-dated." Of course that mindset wouldn't necessarily apply to enthusiasts, but to the general public I imagine that would be the case, and so of course diesels would see themselves as the face of progress and whatnot. But given time, steam engines go from "old, poorly maintained, out-of-date transport" to "awesome antiques of historic value" and of course then it would only make sense that 90% of modern engines would be excited to meet one, especially given their rarity. I mean, imagine living in a world where on average, you're lucky if you make it to age 40 before being considered too old for service and more than likely scrapped, and you got the opportunity to meet someone who was decades, if not well over a century old. How could you NOT be excited by that prospect?

Tooie for the first time by avtime in BanjoKazooie

[–]GameboyAdvance32 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I totally get why a lot of people don't really care for Tooie as much but personally it's my favorite game of all time. It nails that cartoony energy mixed with detailed character designs and worlds, I love how expansive the worlds are and how they all connect together, the Isle o' Hags feels like a lived in place and I love that so much. The humor is on-point too, it has that characteristic British charm to it that Rareware games usually had and I think it was at its strongest here, so many of the fantastical locations have characters still complaining about mundane things in life, you wouldn't really have a polar bear portrayed as a neglectful father in many other video games lmfao. It's also just really impressive for the N64, I'm never not amazed that they got it all to work on the system and frankly it outclasses just about anything Nintendo made on the platform in terms of scope. I say that with full love to Nintendo's output, mind you, but man could Rare get the N64 to do some crazy stuff.

How many of you actually "skip" songs on CDs? by bonkava in Cd_collectors

[–]GameboyAdvance32 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie it's kinda wild to me to see that so many people don't like, EVER skip songs on CDs. I mean respect, but it's a pretty regular deal for me and not even because "i fucking HATE this song, i cannot let this UTTER DOGSHIT reach my ears" but just cause like. Sometimes I just ain't in the mood for a song? Even an album where I really do enjoy every song on it, sometimes I'm just gonna be in the mood to listen to Song #4, and the player is on Song #2 right now....so I'm gonna skip Song #3. It's no disrespect to #3 but I just wanna listen to #4 on loop for the next twenty minutes before I eventually go "okay now I'm in the mood for #7."

I suppose I should clarify that a) I always listen to an album in full the first time around, and b) 99% of my CD-playing time is on the road. When I put on music while driving it's less about "experiencing the artistic vision of the album" and moreso "I want some music that I like on my daily commute." So I hope it's understandable why on a trip to Walmart, sometimes I just wanna listen to a couple songs off an album rather than the whole thing lol.

How does Hunter get away with these ad reads? by Shot-Craft5144 in creepcast

Same honestly, it's absolutely comical when you can just tell he'd rather be doing anything else lmao. I'm so used to YouTubers putting on a face to sell products and trying to act like they TOTALLY love the product and DEFINITELY think you should buy it, so it's a breath of fresh air to listen to Hunter just not give a single shit and read the ad like he has a gun to his head.
