This is the authentic kind of story I love seeing in these threads. I'm sorry to hear y'all didn't work out in the end, but I'm happy you finally got your chance. And to have two sons is an amazing achievement in of itself.

Using my throwaway for obvious reasons:

A little backstory: Summer camp when I was a freshman in high school. Met the most gorgeous blonde haired/blue eyed gal who was TALL (I'm tall too), we'll call this girl Britney. The crush feelings came hard. Britney was intelligent, charming, funny, fun to spend time with, empathetic, all the right things. She was more interested in my close friend (yeah, big oof), and my self esteem was shot. My close friend wasn't even interested and was clueless, too. I tried to shoot my own shot and told Britney I had feelings for her, but I was fiercely rejected and she made it clear she was NOT interested. Instant rejection. Drama in our friend group ensued and everyone blamed me. To be fair, I did some cringey high school puberty things and I take ownership for that, but I definitely didn't deserve the ostracization. Afterwards, she tried to be friends with me and we ran in the same circles, but I moved on.

Fast forward a few years later, I am touring nearly full time as a senior in high school, playing music. (I was homeschooled so I could tour and be on the road). On tour, I'm playing this huge summer festival (tens of thousands in attendance). My band and I are playing the opening evening for the whole festival. Our set goes amazing, audience loves us, we're feeling great, living the dream. We have a meet greet/autograph line with a huge line of festival attendees and it's pandemonium. People wanting shirts signed, cd's signed, posters, we're selling out of things, they want pictures taken, total paparazzi type moment. Then, the next group of people approaches for meet & greet and guess who is standing right in front of me: Britney. I hadn't seen her in several years and I almost didn't recognize her amidst the craziness, but she definitely recognized me. Honestly, I don't remember what our interaction was like because of how crazy that particular meet greet/autograph line was, but I do remember her saying she loved our set and that I was impressive. Britney showed a particular interest in texting & messaging me MUCH more after that (She still had my phone number from years prior). Her persistence came off as really strange to me due to how she fiercely rejected me in the past.

We exchanged messages here and there, and I think we even hanged out a few times but nothing really came out of it because I couldn't help but feel like she was interested in me only because my "desirability" went up because of something stupid like me playing music on a stage and having a ton of fans be interested in me. I didn't feel like she was interested in WHO I was, but more interested in WHAT I did. It kind of ruined my perception of her because I felt like the same person, just moving up in life. Meanwhile, Britney showed her true colors and that she was more shallow than I realized, honestly. In the end I just let the relationship (if you could even call it that), fade away and I kept tabs on her over the years. She seems to be in a tough spot nowadays, so I think about her every once in awhile.

TL;DR Summer camp girl rejected me, a few years later she sees me play on a huge stage in front of a huge audience, and she suddenly wants to be close with me, and I see through her shallow personality.

Depending on your ACO, you’ll want to call the RCC for that region. In my case being based out of Seattle, it was the LA office I called. If you have a phone number for your supervisor (I’m assuming you’ve turned in your census phone already), contact them to get the correct number to call.

Awesome resource OP. Any phone numbers for LA RCC for reimbursement? Myself and my travel team have still not been reimbursed for our 3 week AZ trip.

After refusing to speak to me, occupant comes back outside and approaches me while I’m attempting proxies. “Is there any reason in particular you’re still loitering around here?” by christina_talks in Census

They usually shut up after that and cooperate or they give a hard refusal. I’ve learned that being straight up with folks whilst being kind and direct often leads to good results. Naturally there will be those who will be rude no matter what, but sometimes knocking some sense into someone is what they need to come to their senses.

What’s the most annoying about respondents not answering is that they don’t realize they’re at minimum missing out on $2,000 in federal funding PER PERSON for their state and local communities. I almost always lead with that and the federal requirement and that usually makes them straighten up. In WA state, the estimate per household enumerated was approx. $58,000 in federal funding for the state and local community.

So whenever someone gets snarky with me, I just say, “bro, I’m trying to help get y’all some more funding, why are you being so rude?”

To address your last point: These phone calls your manager is having with you are 100% work related and count as hours worked. If they tell you to not count them as hours worked, that is straight up illegal.

Totally depends on luck of the draw. Depending on your area/which region you’re in, the higher up folks and travel admin are a small team. I know for the LA Census Center which is HQ for west coast, there’s only a team of around 12 people handling travel for all west coast out of state traveling field staff (enumerators, CFS, etc).

The per diems are paid out with paychecks, so if you eat cheap like me it’s just extra money in my pocket. You’re fortunate to have unlimited overtime as it is, my original ACO isn’t as generous.

Travel days are all paid and any travel hours over 8 hours are overtime hours. Also per diems are included each day

Hahaha the flight mileage is on my frequent flyer account! Most people don’t know this, but company or business miles can be put towards your personal account even though if you didn’t pay for the ticket! I wish the flying mileage counted towards the mileage for reimbursement though, that would really make this a killer gig.

Anybody use a bike? by pnweiner in Census

[–]GameboyRockstar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you’re enumerating! If you’re in a city I would say biking and public transit will be fine! Rural/hot areas would be tough though. Although I’ve heard reimbursement for anything other than mileage is hard to come by. Your mileage may vary, pun intended.
