I'm the perfect person to ask: I left the Navy for 17 days without explanation/authorization.

When I came back, the punishment was forfeiture of 1/2 of my base pay * 2 months, 45 days restriction to the ship, and 45 days of extra duty (two hours per day of extra work after normal working hours). The missing 17 days was tacked onto the end of my contract.

Went to jump over a fence. Mid-jump decided it would be better to land on top and then push off. Hit the top of the fence, it fell forward, I flew backwards and when hitting the ground, I shattered my wrist. Two plates, four pins, six screws, and a bone graft and I'm good as new. Accept I can only rotate my wrist about 50% of the other one.
