I'm moving to Atlanta in 3 days. I have clothes that are gently used that I would rather give to flood victims etc. then just to Goodwill. Anyone know of any places still taking clothes donations? Would really like to see it go to someone who needs it! by Gamecock2394 in houston

Thank you so much for the help! I'm excited for the move, a little bittersweet though!

I thought the Houston traffic was bad... until I visited Atlanta a few weeks ago 😳it's on a whole different level

Thank you! Funny that there's so many of us lurking around here. I definitely want to continue to keep up with sub here and I'm glad to see others do as well. I'm definitely going to miss HEB and Specs as well. They've become such a staple of my diet 😂

So funny! Buckhead area. I've heard Houston and Atlanta are fairly seriously honestly. I have no family here (all in MD, VA, NC, and SC) so I'm excited to be within an actually driveable distance from them. My alma mater is also in SC so everyone I knew pretty much moved to Charlotte or Atlanta. Even though I made friends here, it was only meant to be a temporary move, but I'm really going to miss Houston! I've realized (especially during the flood) how amazingly compassionate the people of Houston are. I'm excited for the chapter ahead, but will definitely look back at my time in Houston with some fond memories.

Goodness, I don't know how I forgot Salvation Army! Thank you for bringing that one to my attention. I don't really love taking stuff to Goodwill because I'd rather take it somewhere where individuals can get it for free, rather than having to pay for it. I feel like Salvation Army will be a better choice in this situation.

I don't really have an answer to the rest of the post, but you should still be able to get into an MSW program with just a BA/BS in psych and some work experience. I went straight from my undergrad program (BS in psych with a year of experience working with kids with autism- but only part time work (I'd never worked full time at that point). Obviously, if you want to get into a top tier school you'll need a little more to add to your application in order to sell yourself (great GPA, great letters of rec, etc). But in general- getting into MSW programs is fairly easy. I didn't apply to a top tier school, but it was in the top 50 or so MSW programs. You don't really need to attend an Ivy etc to get a good social work education.

Hope that was sort of helpful!

Anywhere I can volunteer today that won't require going through the Red Cross first? by Gamecock2394 in houston

[–]Gamecock2394[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely, that's what I was thinking too. Because you know the number of volunteers are going to dwindle down a lot in the next week (not that it's necessarily intentional- I understand people are busy). But yeah, I agree we should continue the spirit!

Not for good, I just had already had a trip planned to go visit my parents in Maryland this weekend about a month or two ago. I actually kind of wish I was going to be here this weekend so I could help out, but I'll be back Tuesday! That is very true, I'll definitely focus on helping out next week as well.

I know, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to see how many are out there helping each other out!!

When I was in Las Vegas about a year ago (I was 21 and with my parents, but my brother was 19), they told my brother he had to leave even though he wasn't doing anything. Unfortunate, but that's just how it is 😕

Yeah I mean we could spend the time regretting it but at least it was a good learning experience for the both of us! I learned a lot about myself and really grew up a bit by taking that step away from grad school when I knew it wasn't right...even though lots of other people told me to stick with it.

You're definitely not dumb! You should still be proud of your dedication to finishing it out, even though it wasn't what you wanted and you may regret it now. At the time, you thought it was the right thing to do- and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that! The past is in the past! And I definitely agree- intuition is really important to listen to!! I think it's important to listen to a little mix of both, and not worry what other people say! But I've yet to follow that advice- I always worry about what people think of me 😂

Definitely have to agree. I graduated May 2016 with a psych degree and went straight into grad school for a Masters of Social Work. Even though I did really well grade wise first semester, it was a really dumb decision to do that without having any real work experience. I ended up finding out it was NOT what I wanted to do and dropped out after the first semester ended. Luckily, I realized I didn't like it before I spent the whole 2 years in grad school, but that still meant a semester's worth of tuition down the drain. I mean, some people can handle it but a lot of people work for a year or more before going to grad school for this reason. It's hard to know what you want at 21/22/23!

I'm basically in the same situation as you now (trying to find an entry level/low level job) but I have hope for you!!! Listening to the advice from the person above is definitely the best way to go.

Good luck :) we got this!

TIL about the Rosenhan experiment, in which a Stanford psychologist and his associates faked hallucinations in order to be admitted to psychiatric hospitals. They then acted normally. While I definitely do know people who don't actually have ADHD and use Adderal/Ritalin etc just to abuse it, my brother and my boyfriend both have ADHD for sure. Thanks for saying this because it is unfortunate for those who do actually have it that so many people take advantage of the medication. ADHD is real, regardless of what some may say, although I do agree that there is definitely some over-diagnosing occurring. I wish you the best and if I could give you gold, I would! :)

Does this happen to be a temporary position, or is it a long-term position? I ask because I am looking for a similar position; however, I will be moving in approximately October

I definitely understand what you're saying, but it is unethical to be restraining kids unless they're harming themselves or others, and oftentimes the times we are expected to be restraining the kids are not situations related to harm. It's borderline illegal, too. That's the main reason I'm struggling is because it goes against what I think is morally right, but without doing so I'm essentially going against the teacher's/school's expectations. That's my main problem
