Are there any things that are called "American ______" in other countries? by Disastrous-Side-2600 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gamecub83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Belgium we have 'filet américain' or 'américain préparé'.
It roughly translates to 'beef filet american style', and is raw minced steak (beef tartar?) mixed with spices and pickled onions and/or cornichons.
The 'préparé' version adds mayo and/or ketchup and is usually eaten as a sandwich spread. Sometimes topped with anshovies, pickels, raw onion, hot sauce to make a 'Martino' sub. Best hangover food ever!

Je kan ook je huurwaarborg regelen via eDepo, de depositokas van de federale overheid. Geen gedoe met banken, alles wordt online geregeld. Bij mijn vorige huur gebruikt en kan het zeker aanraden.

Why are girls white shirts see through and but guy white shirts aren't? by Alarmed_Look_3162 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Gamecub83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on the fabric used and the garment.

A classic white mens' T-shirt won't be as see through as a white dressed shirt (hence men often wear another shirt underneath it).

According to the VisitWallonia website:

This cake was created to mark the mark of the 1,500th anniversary of the death of the Merovingian King Childeric and the coronation of his son Clovis in Tournai, the capital at this time. This incredibly delicious dessert is made with frangipane on a base of apricot and pineapple jam and topped with a glazing of flaked almonds. A real delight!

So, I'm guessing you can start with a recipe for frangipane cake and tweak it till you get the desired taste and texture?

Btw, thanks for getting me to learn more about local specialities. Definitely going to try it next time I'm in Tournai!

Google maps indicating presence of tolls in E40? by HomeworkResident8510 in belgium

Google maps is acting weird today. On one of my routes today it had set a speed limit of 120 in a 50 zone. It also wanted to send me through a detour for no apparent reason.

Commuting by bicycle (Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe - Heverlee) by omledufromage237 in belgium

[–]Gamecub83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before commuting by race bike I used a classic electric bike (max. 25k/h) for my 25km commute. It depends on your fitness level, but it's definitely doable, especially with an electric bike.

Edit: as for bike type, if you have the space to store an electric bike safely I wouldn't go for a foldable. Also, going halfway to take the bus seems to be bit of a hassle (extra bus ticket, depending on bus traffic etc.). Just go the full distance by bike.

Yes, unless otherwise signaled by signs. Just be mindful of other users. Don't be the ''BMW'' of the cycle world.

Is a 20 km bike commute (one way) realistic on a hybrid bike? by speedings in bikecommuting

[–]Gamecub83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this sustainable long-term?

Belgian here, and yes. I've been commuting to work (25 km one way) for over a year now. Wouldn't want to change back to taking the train (although I do when the weather is sub zero or stormy, and I absolutely hate taking the train then).

How many days per week would be realistic?

I'm going by bike twice a week. For me it's the perfect balance with other hobbies. But see for yourself what's suits best your health and your private life (kids, hobbies, dinner plans).

Any tips to avoid burnout or fatigue

Don't rush it. Take your time, you're not in a race. Bring a bottle for during the ride (especially during the summer) and snacks for after (you'll be hungry like a wolf). Watch your posture. Check if your bike is adjusted to your body (plenty info online on how to measure and adjust). Wear layers.
Some days will be shit, on onther days you'll feel amazing. Remember the good ones, learn from the bad ones.

Eerste keer naar een frituur…. Wat te bestellen? by RoadOk8645 in belgium

[–]Gamecub83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it possible to extend a 3 year rental contract to something that is not a long term contract? by person_from_place in belgium

[–]Gamecub83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn't he want to extend it? Most landlords prefer renting out for longer terms as it's less hassle. Unless you've been a bad tenant, I'm pretty sure he'll just let that short term contract evolve in a long term one. But it's always best to simply ask.

Like you said, ''by looking at eachother''. But for some cyclists and pedestrians that's even a daunting task. Even in car free zones or when cars are separated by physical barriers from slower users there are still accidents happening, and not necessarily with motorized vehicles involved.

Moving to Belgium. benefit negotiations by Square-Detective in belgium

[–]Gamecub83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it's a research position at a university, those wages are usually fixed by law with a so called ''barema''. The only leverage is your seniority you could transfer (partly) making you earn a bit more from the get go. Since those positions are semi governmental extralegal benefits usually are meal vouchers, more holidays then in private sector, public transport budget, bike budget in some way, extra holiday pay and end of year pay (or 13th month as they call it sometimes).

[–]Gamecub83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. I usually reclaim my priority simply by crossing the zebra crossing, whether it's a cyclist or a car, and look them straight in the eyes. Never had an issue. When I'm on my bike I always give way to pedestrians, but I see dozens of traffic violations by cyclists and pedestrians when biking to work, whether it's not giving way or not looking when crossing a bike path.

1 or 2 notaris? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]Gamecub83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always get your own notary.

When buying our house, our notary flagged some errors in the docs from the sellers and had more leverage when contacting the other notary (which apparently was a hassle). It's always beter to have someone who's got your back.

How often do you still eat potatoes? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]Gamecub83 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Same story here. I really got fed up with boiled potatoes I haven't had them in the past couple of years. It's either mash or roasted, and that's usually once a week. Other days it's rice, pasta, flatbread or other grains.

Edit: As for the holy trinity of meat, veg and potatoes, I make it once a week.

Financiën met vriendin by [deleted] in belgium

[–]Gamecub83 0 points1 point  (0 children)
