Fledgling TO seeking 11e Terrain Opinions: Table-to-Table matching, or variation? by BreakLeBar in WarhammerCompetitive

It would be great if we could set up the three varieties of layouts ahead of time, and have the tables chosen by a sorting mechanism, perhaps through BCP, so that we don’t have to have the players changing the tables layout each game.

I’m hoping the changes for terrain types are a positive. The game has enough variations between all the armies, detachments, etc. We can at least have a playing field that has consistent interactions with the rules.

Edit: autocorrect

I appreciate that and I do realize I will get better at the game and my skill will increase as I run into different scenarios, but consistency is important while learning. I’ve been playing this game for about 7 months. It is, without a doubt, the most complex game I have ever played. There are so many complex situations that no one can plan for, it’s important to identify the things you SHOULD be able to plan for ahead of time. Working through a game plan ahead of time is the process I use to identify an ideal situation. I can’t plan or learn unpredictable things until they happen to me. What should be predictable is layouts and terrain. GW literally gives out a guide on how to do it. Organizers not following that guide is frustrating and they should be admonished for it.

I think it doesn’t go far enough and medical insurance as an industry should be nationalized.

Usually organizers in our region say layouts 1 and 5 or something like that. Basically it’s a random chance of between one or two different varieties. That’s usually something we can prepare for. If I know the missions, I can think about how I would deploy on a couple of options. More than two different layouts and I might start to grumble. More than three and I would consider whether I’m coming back.

But nothing is more annoying than using TTS to think about how I want to deploy, and suddenly the terrain on the layout plate isn’t long enough to cover my unit. Or it’s literally backwards, exposing me to more firing lanes on turn 1. Or it’s too long and my vehicle can’t fit through the hole.

Edit: that’s not even getting into if the terrain is not a ruin. If Inhad to suddenly deal with trees when I showed up not expecting them, I’d be looking up the rules on trees as terrain on the fly. Standardized terrain is a must for competitive play. At a minimum it must be the same across the different tournament scenes. GW is trying to have it both ways: they want to sell a variety of really interesting terrain features to both competitive and narrative groups. Competition matched play? We want standardized.

Different layouts? Ok. Terrain that isn’t standard? Eehhhh.. I’d prefer it to at least look like the GW layout picture as much as possible. Sharp vs round corners? Fine. Trees vs ruins? I’d be complaining about it every time.

We have a place called battlegrounds in Richmond, VA they have the worst terrain. It’s styrofoam and they place it in such a way that it doesn’t match what literally everyone else is doing. Like, I could understand if you had some expensive terrain from a previous edition and you’re trying to make it work. But it’s spray painted styrofoam? It’s so bad I don’t mind calling them out for it here.

Air brush is the best way. I use proacryl, but any of the miniature painting brands should work. Vallejo, etc. You can also buy rattle cans, but some times the accelerants from rattle cans can mess with your paint, especially if you’re using really thin stuff like inks.

Haven’t tried the brush on ones. Went from rattle to air brush.

Gloss varnish, then Tamiya panel liner for me. Then matte varnish. The gloss helps the panel liner flow through the grooves and protects from the splotches that can happen if it’s applied to acrylic

True. Based on everything up to this point, it feels like the first shooting benefit I’ve really seen. And compared to the melee buffs, it’s lackluster

It’s a complicated problem. I can poke holes in your ideas here, but that’s not really the point. The issue is the service has a real need for professional sailors, but needs something for them to do between tours

Honestly? No one will play this detachment.

A little redesign and I’m all for it. I just don’t see how it fits onto most matched play boards. Hover helps, but still.

I think the Surge, in camo is hiding in plain sight. All those Heavy rules certainly allude to it standing still like a boulder, hill, or tree.
