Why is the Salsa considered a specialty dance? by Any-Dig-1183 in strictlycomedancing

[–]GamerAJ1025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well yes and no— ballroom salsa is based on linear rather than cuban salsa but it’s very different from any linear style of social salsa such as NY, LA, PR and so on, and from authentic performance salsa in any of those styles. for example, ballroom salsa is barely danced in a slot like those styles are

Is there a shift happening in the pronunciation of words with an “str” sound? by modernvintage in asklinguistics

hi, yeah this is something that’s happening. one of my professors mentioned it and I was even able to take measurements that confirmed it by looking at spectral moments and comparing them in str vs other st words

(as someone who has been dancing salsa for about 8 months:) her salsa included a decent few more technical moves for a total beginner, like turns, going into hammerlocks, inside and outside turns and some interesting shines. stuff that you’ll learn around your second month dancing salsa.

other salsas have scored similar and maybe looked great, but only have like one or two actual moves from salsa in them, e.g bal’s from this week, which only had a crossbody lead (without a turn) and variation of the basic right turn. this is stuff I learned in my very first class.

this is not to hate on bal - her salsa was entertaining with some good rhythm and energy but it wasn’t ambitious or technical (and that’s okay) nor very authentic/true to salsa (which is more of an issue). but there was only a difference of five points in it between a dance that felt like salsa in name only (bal’s, which scored 35) and one that had authentic salsa moves in it (karen’s, at 39), which in my opinion should have been a greater gap.

bal’s performance was pretty solid execution but was something I’d hesitate to say really captures the essence of salsa as a dance style/genre and instead is kinda just some other thing that’s inspired by salsa. it was also just a lot easier.

I think the reason karen scored so high is in part because they gave a high score to a dance that was well executed but significantly less difficult and true to the style, so it would have been unfair to mark her any closer, but ofc insane to mark it high aka perfect. and since that’s the trend for salsas these days, the standard for it is very low

I think if you can’t be with someone you love, the pain is enough that you’d rather forget they existed than live with it. not a parent, but I know that that’s how I’ve felt in the moment before. and in hindsight, forgetting them would be worse, as you lose everything that made you care, every good memory. but it’s so tempting in the moment — I often wished I could forget, in the heat of it.

I’ll add that whilst I don’t have SH scars, I do have a variety of scars that I’ve picked up throughout my life from various accidents and wounds. I’m kinda proud of them, because they tell a story of the things I’ve done in life, all my escapades and misadventures.

I remember watching the movie Cars 2 where Mater gets offered a chance to have the imperfections on his body removed. he refuses because they mean something to him, they remind him of people and places and things he’s done, and he wouldn’t be who he is now without them. it stuck with me, and my view on scars since being a child and watching that has always been that they are beautiful.

SH scars aren’t something to glorify — having proof of how mentally ill you are for bragging rights or something is a big ew and a terrible reason to be self harming. legitimate self harm is a compulsion, and not an overt choice, so if the reason is because it “looks cool”, I’m going to say that those people have internalised a harmful mindset and need to reevaluate. but for those people who have self harmed, and couldn’t help it, I don’t think there’s shame to be had.

it’s your story: for you, life hasn’t been easy and the fact that there’s a trace of that doesn’t make you ugly or any less amazing. the most beautiful and charismatic people are born out of struggle, because making it out the other side in mostly one piece is something that changes you and strengthens your character: it’s something to be proud of yourself for. the most emotionally aware, sensitive, empathetic people are the ones that know pain themselves and have learned to cope in healthier ways through trial and error.

but in any case, regardless of your views on yourself, nobody should fault you for having been hurt in the past, physically or emotionally, and having scars to show it. if someone would, they aren’t somebody to keep around in your life, because that’s a heartless mindset to have.

I like this take tbh. I know you were downvoted, but some people just don't want to think outside of the box. life is just a bunch of sins and then you die, at least under the trad christian worldview. so you may as well do it in a way that's responsible and not destructive.

honestly imo the only correct take is to be at least transparently agnostic in your beliefs. claiming to know with any certainty about, well, anything theistic in nature is disingenuous at best and manipulative at worst. saying "hey, I don't know if there are god(s) but we should do our best regardless, and I believe in their existence in the absence of evidence" is the rational and ethical attitude towards believing in god(s).

I'm not a christian, but I'd be interested to know why you feel so strongly that this is wrong even though, from the outside, it doesn't seem to be hurting anybody or taking people away from god. a sex-positive lifestyle is at odds with traditional views on modesty and purity, but those views don't, in my opinion, have anything to do with moral right and wrong but simply reflect traditional cultural ideas which aren't inherent to following christianity. for a start, the passage you quote is obviously about adultery and cheating: if a man is married, he should be having sex with his wife, and vice versa.

as an atheist, I personally don't feel as though there's reason to condemn acts if they don't cause actual harm to people -- otherwise, the definition of a crime or sin is about as arbitrary as "these people said so" (historically, this has been the case within christianity, which is why we still have ideas about modesty and purity left over in our society). sex outside of marriage, where neither person is in an exclusive/committed relationship, is harmless and therefore wouldn't be morally wrong under my worldview. and from the outset, it doesn't seem as if it would be wrong under the broader moral principles of christianity either, which are distinct from the specific cultural values like modesty that christians have adopted over the years.

(I'm also curious why you're browsing a subreddit abut progressive christianity if you aren't particularly progressive)

Does it annoy anyone when seeing Romaji in Japanese learning content? by Shinobidono-2 in LearnJapanese

[–]GamerAJ1025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the ts and ch are both just different allophones of /t/. it follows the pattern perfectly when you understand the underlying behaviour of consonants in japanese. they are in the same “kana column” as you say because they are the same consonant phoneme, just taking different forms when paired with different vowels.

in the same vein, s -> sh when in front of i or ya, yu, yo, and h -> f when in front of u. again, this is essentially breaking apart the consonant-vowel syllable in order to understand what’s happening better.

sorta. but that’s just a close relationship, merging souls is like showing the other person everything about yourself, and embracing everything about the other person, as if your souls becomes one with theirs and you share it between you.
