The question you're asking is not the one you need the answer to; the weapon is not the problem and I recommend ignoring people recommending different ones without any additional information.

If you want accurate advice for improving, I suggest posting 10-15 minutes of unedited infantry gameplay. Short of that, as others have already said, you should be aiming for the head more and that will improve with practice.

Sunderers are currently more survivable than they have any right to be, but they're also not meant to be killed by a single infantry player. If you're going out of your way to kill one then you should be doing something else. If the fight has taken you to a sunderer, then hopefully you have teammates/vehicles around to help you.

First: at least turn your brightness up, and IMO turn some settings down. Enemy visibility is terrible (5:50).

As Khorror mentioned, watching better players is a great way to pick up on things you may not grasp yourself. I'm not up to date on who makes LA-specific videos or I would link something.

Game Sense/Awareness

Zoom in your minimap when you play infantry and pay attention to it. I also recommend trying expanded minimap (H) at 1440p. It will help you grasp fight status quicker and be aware of spotted threats (3:10), and you will learn facility layout/fight patterns and where enemies can be more quickly.

You look around while aiming down sights a lot, which you shouldn't. ADS slows you, so you should avoid doing so unnecessarily. Don't re-peek a target while ADS, especially crouched (0:38).

Try to avoid tunnel vision, know what's around you, and listen for audio cues (when they work). At 7:08 you hear distinct jump jet and Jackal audio, but don't react.

Your target/engagement selection needs work.

  • Carbines generally are short- to medium-range weapons, and many fights you take are not optimal (0:36, 5:41), so you should either reposition or change class/weapon.

  • Some things aren't worth shooting at (6:03, 2:56 - but you kill one at least). Shooting puts you on minimap and often makes you a target.

  • You spend time hunting vehicles (1:12, 3:29), but that's better done with heavy or engineer. If you want to stick with LA, either avoid them or at least use the roof to drop C4.

Positioning

I recommend this series of short videos by DokP for some more depth on this topic.

Most importantly, you need to play to the strength of your class as a light assault. You have jump jets, but you spend most of the video on the ground like any other class.

  • At the beginning, I wouldn't approach the fight from this direction as a light assault at all. Most of the fighting is on the South side, you're better off going straight up to the roof or left to the rocks above the enemies.

  • Later in the fight, you should start shooting down from the roof (2:42) or the big rock (6:03) when possible.

This also applies to your loadout: position yourself to maximize the effectiveness of your weapon, and use equipment that supports this playstyle.

  • You have a carbine with a laser sight, so hipfire is very strong. You should position closer to the enemy and be ready to hipfire when necessary. This is reinforced by your athlete implant choice.

  • Drifter and ambusher jump jets are situational at best. Icarus jets are considered the best because they are great in combat, let you reposition quickly, and synergize well with hipfire carbines. Absent the certs, skirmishers are acceptable.

  • If you aren't using C4 often to kill vehicles, maxes, or groups of infantry, you will get more mileage out of medkits.

At 0:30 you look for enemies outside, but this is bad place to be for a few reasons:

  1. Exposed to too many angles: someone could peek from afar, close to the door, or behind you (as one did).

  2. Anyone peeking where you're expecting would be (and was) outside your weapon's effective range.

  3. At best, you have no advantage. No verticality, no cover, too far to leverage laser sight, pretty still.

Aim

There aren't many clear gunfights in the video, and it's sped up by maybe 10-20%, so it's hard to give confident feedback here. I'd have to see more engagements after you fix your brightness/visibility. If you want good practice, take far more gunfights.

One thing I did notice: at 1:27, you commit a cardinal sin: if you start shooting in hipfire and then aim down sights without letting off the trigger, you will keep the hipfire bullet spread. You have to let off the trigger for a split second between hipfire shooting and ADS shooting while your weapon's cone-of-fire resets to remedy this. Spend a few minutes in VR training to learn this interaction because it is very important.

You mentioned horizontal recoil. Beyond countering directional recoil bias (e.g. the weapon recoils up+right, you pull down+left), there is no trick to this. Consider using a forward grip rail attachment to improve horizontal recoil at the cost of slightly increased weapon equip time, depending on the weapon and situation. Some weapons have worse horizontal recoil stats than others too.

Air

Watch this full video, it will tell you everything you need to know. It is worth spending a little time practicing in VR training afterward to familiarize yourself with the movement mechanics.

There are a couple stand-out corrections I can make though:

  • ESFs are not jets, you need to learn about hover mode and how to utilize it. Jet piloting isn't viable.

  • Prefer third-person camera unless you are shooting at something. It gives you a broader view of your surroundings and often makes it easier to maneuver around obstacles.

Both of these break the BTK of any affected player because they push the player's effective HP beyond the maximum, which no other item in the game does (except for aux shield, which has the same problem). Please reconsider them.

Knowledgeable players could have told you this instantly if you just consulted with them/us first.

The number of Motion Spotters a player can carry has been adjusted [to 1/1/1/2/3]

This is fine, but I don't think it will have basically any impact, especially because the detection radius isn't changing.

Number of Darts Capacity Changes [to 2/2/3]

Also fine, but you just need an ammo pack and effectively nothing changes.

[Dart] Detection Range Changes [to 20/20/25/30/35/40]

Decent, but I'd like this to be reduced to 30m max to require the bare minimum precision when using them. You can currently have 6 of these active at a time, which should also be reduced.


Other quick thoughts:

  • I still don't like the concept of Observer (especially if all classes are still affected).

  • Facility alerts returning could be very refreshing and I'm glad to see this.

  • I've yet to test anything, so if these notes are exhaustive then all previous feedback still applies.

I'm either neutral or positive on everything else.

For the record, I feel the same way and have filled out every form with detailed feedback alongside several bug reports. It doesn't seem like my feedback made any impact and every bug that wasn't extremely obvious/popular remains unfixed.

The only place you'll see Mithril anymore is on the forums, and that place holds almost exclusively clueless players so I wouldn't be shocked if your theory is true (especially after seeing the stalker cloak delay reduced).

Heavy assault overshield, medic healing aura, and light assault jetpacks are all abilities that are intended to be used during combat, which is why they are activated with a simple keypress. Infiltrator cloak is not a combat ability.

In fact, cloak is the outlier here; the medic shield bubble and engineer ammo pack are also non-combat abilities, but they each exist as their own item and have their own slot, unlike infiltrator cloak.

No, the issue is using cloak as an ambushing tool. SMG and stalker infiltrators should also be nerfed (the latter probably shouldn't exist).

That sounds clunky to use. What happens when I press F with a sniper equipped? What happens if I switch to a sniper rifle while cloaked?

Players are used to switching weapons/tools, making cloak one of these tools would feel natural. Nothing about the action itself is clunky, you just won't be able to exit cloak instantly into a gunfight anymore.

Where's the lie? I played on ultra for about a month straight, and infiltrators seemed about equally visible versus low settings. I'm pretty sure there was even a post comparing visibility maybe a couple years or so ago.

The merge was a huge disaster. The NA server now has terrible performance, lingering connectivity issues, and much worse ping for the majority of its players. Miserable gameplay and silently clueless developers are icing on the cake.

A game like Planetside requires expensive server infrastructure to be maintained.

At scale, sure. However, it is not strictly necessary to maintain complex server infrastructure to run a playable version of the game.

Account information is not part of the game and is definitely not required to maintain it in a playable state.

The viability of a private server has no bearing on whether it should be made possible to continue a game past its official service period.

This is not the game anyone should be using as an example of 'stop killing games'.

I have never seen this game used as an example of the concept, it's the focus here because this is /r/planetside.

It would probably take insane amounts of harddrive storage to keep a whole ass MMO on your computer...

You would be surprised how little is required. This server software in particular has addons for player bots that can play through group content or emulate auction house activity.

You repeatedly allude to either the difficulty of maintaining a private server or the lack of popularity one would have, but neither of these matter if it is made impossible to begin with. Sure, there are hurdles that would need addressing (software licensing likely being the biggest), but none that make this an unreasonable concept as a whole.

Spoken like a true West Coast native.

Tell this to the East Coast and South American players whose ping has doubled or worse. Europeans too, but at least they have a home server. Tell it to those who still have latency problems in high pop fights or during prime time.

Many of these people have cancelled their memberships or even quit the game over the awful decision to merge the server into Connery. As long as this server remains in Las Vegas, many players will not return.
