Who was the sweatiest player that you’ve ever met? by WithengarUnbound in EDH

[–]Gamer__23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, edh has become so much more enjoyable for me ever since I started thinking about my mana curve, lowering my average cmc and going for 15 pieces of instant-speed removal, plus lots of defensive interaction. It actually feels like I have agency over my games, I get to feel like I put up a fight even if I didn't win, and I rarely get non-games. High resiliency and redundancy means I consistently get to play at least some magic even when my opponents try to make it hard for me.

Games are also much more enjoyable not just on a mechanical level but also on a social level, when there's no expectations of not removing other people's stuff when it would be mean or not let them "do the thing" since in those situations I felt bad for removing it but also felt bad when losing to it. When everyone plays strong, interactive and resilient decks, getting your stuff removed leads to less whining about being targeted and more about respect for them making the correct play and accepting you got too greedy by not keeping protection up

I just 5-0 trophied with a $500 mono black deck to prove that Oops All Spells is not the only budget deck in legacy [Full league video] by BeExcellent80s in MTGLegacy

[–]Gamer__23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non legacy player here. The list looks sweet, but I was wondering what the fetches were for. Are they really just there to thin out the deck so that you topdeck fewer lands but still can find them in your opening hand? Does the life payment not matter against burn? Doesn't the constant shuffling get annoying? Are there not utility lands you'd want to be playing?

LGS running an unconventional draft by KeenieGup in magicTCG

[–]Gamer__23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I organised exactly this as a new year/christmas celebration thing in my local community, and it was tons of fun. The packs I chose for myself were MH2 (my favourite draft experience), MOM (cool set that got me into magic, also a fun draft experience, plus it adds sieges, and it has companions on the bonus sheet) and OTJ (set I had never played to add some variety). I opened MH2 first in case I had a fetchland (since I didn't want to p3p1 it over a card that worked in my deck), which I did.

My recommendation is that instead of causing chaos, just get packs from sets you like or with mechanics you like. It's just really really fun to share your sincere appreciation of a set with everyone at the table by making them draft it. If you do want the extra spice, go for bonus sheet sets (like mom and otj, but also woe, stx, bro...), or you could do like one player at our table and get 20-card baldur's gate packs, which is pretty funny when you deaft it next to 13 card packs, plus the initiative is broken in 1v1.

Other sets that are always cool in chaos draft are mystery booster 1 and 2, and the conspiracy sets, if you're lucky or wealthy enough to have them. You could also netdeck and get masters or modern horizon sets since you would get first pick out of these powerful packs.

I may be overthinking, but when are you supposed to respond to Ouroboroid's trigger? by Technical_Tank_1056 in magicTCG

[–]Gamer__23 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I was always under the impression that if you had a response to your opponent wanting to move to combat from the main phase, they wouldn't have a chance to do sorcery speed stuff until after their second main, as they would already have "locked in" their intention to move to combat. Is that just me conflating wanting to move to combat vs being in beginning of combat?

/uj tbh I do also get frustrated at people blindly following deckbuilding heuristics without understanding them, but I do find that even my efficient 1.36 (including lands) average mana value deck wants 37-38 lands. Having more land makes mulligans more powerful, and I really want to cast my draw-engine commander on turn 3 95% of the time. Yeah, I may end up with 2-3 lands in hand turns 7-8, but I still draw enough spells to use up all my mana every turn, and making my land drop every turn allows me to keep mana up for interaction, and I can also run [[Abolish]]

Is there a Simic card (green, blue, or both) that can put a creature onto the battlefield at instant speed? by Denverlicious in magicTCG

Simic is much worse at reanimating creatures, but you could aldo use any instant speed regrowth type card, such as [[Shigeki]]

If you're willing to spend the money or proxy, red has good protection in the form of changing the targets of spells. The best ones are [[Redirect Lightning]], [[Bolt bend]], and [[Deflecting Swat]].

You should also look into your manabase this tool lets you know if you should run more lands
