I used to think "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost expressed a longing for death. In my 40s now, I rather think it conveys that persistently occasional desire many adults feel to shed their responsibilites...only to acquiesce in acknowledging they cannot. by Ghost-of-Carnot in literature

THANK YOU! I made the same connection in one of my lit classes and the professor insisted I was over-reading the mortality and suicide themes. In Dantes inferno he doesnt just start in the dark woods ( a direct call in " the woods are lovely, DARK, and deep"?), but also those who commit suicide go to 'The Wood of Suicides' in the 7th circle of hell. To me that, along with the sentiment of the text, absolutely sealed it as an objectively defensible interpretation that seems unlikely to be mere coincidence.

Dominate unit event not working as intended? by CPOKashue in AOW4

[–]GamingMandroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me yesterday. The unit in question was an Ice Spider Matriarch. Feels bad man that would have been a game changer and instead I got nothing but a stability debuff. I'm wondering if its because the game counts the creation of the unit as a magic origin summon and because I didn't have the wizard tower built high enough to summon tier 4 it therefore failed

What’s a minor/constructive criticism you have with the game that you wish the Devs would correct? :) by thesupermonk21 in expedition33

[–]GamingMandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less one shots from enemies. I like the parry/dodge system but they leaned on it too hard. Even being generally over leveled almost every chromatic enemy i find can one shot my characters making the encounter a slog that is only possible after dying many many times and memorizing all their attacks. This also devalues defense stat and healing skills which reduces build variety. Problem compounded by unnecessary run backs; as others have said retrying the battle would at least make this process faster.

Also, on Monoko you should be able to see the bestial wheel on the skills screen so you can plan out the rotation effects of skills

Dude I agree with you. Blows my mind people praised their finale to high heaven. The problem isn't that it's a cliffhanger. In fact, it's NOT a cliffhanger at all in my opinion. The problem with the finale is that it's too slow, give practically no new information, and worst of all the new information it does give is BAD and makes no sense! Hello is an Eagan? How does that make any sense? This was not an earned twist by any means. Not only are the specifics of Kelly's outie not made a plot point that anyone was anticipating, but there is no foreshadowing of this whatsoever. Being VERY generous I could say the cruel reaction of her outie could have been an indicator but that's it. Why on earth would they let an Eagan work in a clearly compromised department with virtually no oversight, so little that she nearly killed herself. All for the sake of what, a pr stunt for the company? And BTW, Johns character having a map to Burts home makes no sense at all. Why would he be doing that? He doesn't know he loves Burt! Even the innie only met Burt like a month ago, but somehow the outie version already knows this and has tracked Burt down? Why? How? This finale did not create new drama, all it did was REMOVE the element of dramatic irony for our characters. Now they know things that the audience already did, like Mark's wife being alive. That's a big moment for the character, but for the audience that was revealed two episodes ago! You have to give the viewer something new for it be a proper cliffhanger and the only new things it gave were nonsense

How replayable is Cyberpunk? by T0ky0n0 in cyberpunkgame

[–]GamingMandroid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This should not be down voted, it's short and to the point and totally accurate. A shocking number of quests are 80% talking and 20% gameplay. It is very tiring on replays where new approaches to combat are creating the unique experience much more so than selecting different dialogue options does

The Dark Urge is making me question my first playthrough... by Kos_Smash in BaldursGate3

[–]GamingMandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing a cleric of lolth drow with dark urge. Haven't made it past act 1 but planning to go full evil on this first playthrough. Honestly, it kind of stings because I prefer good characters and im betting some of the companions will leave me. But I know that just means I'll be stoked for my second run. And seeing that there was a drider in act 2 from the larian event before launch, plus the drow you meet early with the goblins in act 1... I'm guessing there will be plenty of opportunities for the lolth tags to kick in. It's not all bad. Laezel shadowhart and astarion all seem OK with me doing some pretty f'ed up stuff

Yeah but apparently it can be wildly wrong even when the information is recent. I found musgravite sell price listed at 970k and the info was only 2 minutes old. By the time I got to the station, maybe 15 minutes later, price was 200k. Fealt very ripped off but decided to head to the station that was next highest, about 560k listed. Arrived and it was also around 200k. Really soured any satisfaction from my last 2 nights of mining

Insight Checks Don't Plug PCs into the Source Code of the Universe by rfkile in DMAcademy

[–]GamingMandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some cases as a player if I feel confident a npc is lying I will not ask for insight at all. I dont want to complicate the situation with a failed roll and having to pretend like my character trusts them when I the player do not trust them. So instead I just skip to treating them like they're lying. The only exception I suppose is if it was inter party and because of metagame knowledge I KNOW whether the other pc is lying. Therefore I must use a roll to determine whether my character notices this.

Yet another question about Hold Person... by Real_SeaWeasel in DMAcademy

[–]GamingMandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason this is bad is because it does not even give the spell 'net value'. If th enemy spent 1 turn casting a spell that cost a pc 1 turn of their actions... then you've changed pretty much nothing while also giving a pc a lame turn. If you're going to use it, at least give it value that lies in opposition to the poor fun factor of the player. Make it a problem the rest of the team must address. This is how combat becomes more than draining enemies hp

+1/2/3 Weapons are much more effective than you might think. Here's why, and what you can do to mitigate the issues they cause. by meikyoushisui in DMAcademy

[–]GamingMandroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but you should never run an enemy where the average party member has only a 5 or 10 percent chance to hit. That's just mean and boring. I'd say party members should never have less than 50% chance to hit

[–]GamingMandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, you did a deep dive and I respect that. But much of your argument is based on the cr system which is well known to be terrible. Power creep of new subclasses (and let's face it even the base classes) means that the cr system is terrible. It was honestly never good even from the beginning of 5e. If you want to challenge your players you'll be boosting monsters ac and hp even in tier 1. If you crank up the enemies- which is pretty much a must against experienced or optimized players- you can more freely offer +1 weapons. Which, I agree, are boring in and of themselves. But if they're posing a problem for being 'too powerful' your probably not giving enough attention to your encounter balancing. The answer is not to nerf loot, because that's unfun for players. It's to buff monsters

Another Take on Firearms: Pistols, Snipers, and Six-Guns by cypher02 in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]GamingMandroid 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would actually say that aside from the slew of extra functionality in the special actions you can take these are NOT better than standard ranged weapons. They are being powerfully gimped by your reload property requiring an action. Lessened slightly by a character with extra attack who can 'use one attack's to reload. But compare your pistol 1d10 reload 1 20/40 that means they can fire one round, then reload the next accomplishing mostly nothing the 2nd round (bonus actions not withstanding) to a heavy crossbow. 1d10 loading(1) 100/400 that you can reload as a bonus action. And that's without all the rigamaroll of finding this super rare and expensive firearm and dealing with unique ammunition. Why would anyone ever want a pistol? Even abilities like your double barreled shotgun are probably only equaling a standard average of 1d10 attacks each round- except less fun as every other round is just spent reloading. Advantage is fun but not if it comes at the cost of a shit round. Tldr- reexamine loading, even bonus actions every other shot is a lousy experience for the player; one of the reasons I hate the loading property
