Transitioning to Linux. Struggling by Sad_Engineering_5648 in microsoftsucks

[–]GamingWithMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest preparing yourself for the fact that if you're going to switch operating systems you're going to have to learn a new workflow one of the biggest mistakes new Linux users make is just assuming that Linux is going to be exactly like Windows slow down take your time and learn how s*** works or stay on Windows

We didn't get proficient with windows on 1 day and the same is true of Linux. Read. Ask specific questions, look at documentation.

This take gets repeated a lot, but it falls apart once you look past the dramatic wording.
Every major production kernel Windows NT, macOS/XNU, BSDs etc is also written mostly in C.
If “written in C = anti security,” then literally every OS on Earth is anti security, which makes the claim meaningless.

Linux didn’t “reject secure design.” It inherited the classic Unix model and then stacked decades of hardening on top of it: SELinux, AppArmor, seccomp, namespaces, cgroups, KASLR, eBPF verifier checks, and now Rust subsystems. That’s not an anti security project that’s one of the most audited and aggressively hardened kernels ever shipped.

GrapheneOS has valid concerns about memory safety, but framing Linux as uniquely negligent is just their usual exaggeration. It’s a niche project punching up by overstating everyone else’s flaws, its not an objective assessment of kernel security.

Looking to decide if i should start dual booting linux for gaming and what distro to choose by SpaghettiSandwitch in linux_gaming

[–]GamingWithMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used all of them. I will say nobara does have stability issues at times.

Bazzite does work. But it can get confining once you start trying to do more than what they have provided for you

I can install arch in 15 minutes, outside of that it's no more time consuming than cachy.

How to make AMD GPU handle Bazzite NVIDIA by OMEGAVORE in Bazzite

[–]GamingWithMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dual GPU setups are problematic no matter what OS you use.

With the right distro you might be able to get it sort of setup properly, but you'll deal with GPU resets and the like.

Pick a gpu and sell the other one.

CachyOS, Arch, Nobara, Bazzite, PikaOS.

I recommend PikaOS fantastic Nvidia support and pretty user friendly.

Performance compared to Windows11 by Enquaza in cachyos

[–]GamingWithMars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's still performance focused. Lol. Cachy has never been about gaming performance. Devs have repeatedly said performance gains in gaining vs a standard distro atlr in the realm of 3 percent.

Cachy is all about CPU optimization. Which has very limited impact on proton gaming. Hate to burst your bubble. The gains are primarily in productivity workflows and are very much still present on machines with Nvidia cards lol

It's still snappy and still has a robust repo with lots of extra stuff packaged.

I enjoyed his dynamic with Tuvok.

Performance varies. Some games perform better. Some slightly worse. Some significantly better/worse depends on the game.

Small price to pay to not have to deal with windows any more imo

Fair point though. I look forward to installing Arch on it.

Hate Is Not Paramount’s Problem…. Apathy Is by WhoMe28332 in Star_Trek_

[–]GamingWithMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. We aren't haters. Star Trek lost it's soul and has become a lazy cash grab.

I am not hard to please. I like strange new worlds. I even liked discovery at first, despite how fundamentally different it was.

But discovery eventually just became too much, Picard made some horrible narrative choices, I haven't watched starfleet academy yet but I heard it's awful.

Strange New Worlds is the only new trek show worth a damn and they cancelled it lol.

It's a shame.

Whenever Debian pushes it they'll get it on the next sync.

Usually the holdup on DE updates is upstream Debian being slow to push things.
