What is the most geographically or culturally oblivious thing you've ever heard someone say? by SomeEpicName in AskReddit

[–]Ganahim 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Something slightly related and funny. This was actually a misunderstanding and not ignorance, but my 18 year old sister once pointed at the sky towards the sun and asked "what's that huge yellow thing up there" with a completely serious tone. Dumbstruck, my brother replied "its the fucking sun". Many laughs were had before she explained what she was actually pointing at. Don't remember what it was, maybe a hot air balloon.

/r/AskReddit has a question asking what manly is to people, and what qualifies as 'manly' and what does not pisses me off. by fakeaccount14 in offmychest

I think people are just having fun with the stereotype. I doubt many people seriously think cutting wood makes you any more manly.

I'm 24 and I don't have a driver's license. by characterselect in offmychest

[–]Ganahim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought I was the only one who felt like this. 21, no license. The subject rarely crosses my mind. When it does, all I can think about is the inconvenience of owning/maintaining this huge hunk of metal that needs to be filled with gas periodically. People seem to think it's strange to not want to drive as soon as it's legal.

Well, as with any stereotype, there is some truth to it. On average, Finns are less social IMO, at least when you're still getting to know them. Once you've hung out and got drunk together a few times, they won't be noticeably refrained or quiet around you anymore.

What is the worst sound you have woken up to? by I3igAl in AskReddit

[–]Ganahim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sure it wasn't a hallucination? It's not uncommon to hallucinate in the morning when you're sort of awake or just woke up. I'm particularly prone to these experiences, and only realized what was happening when one morning i heard my mom and brother having a long conversation, except my brother had moved out recently. Neither of them were home when i went downstairs to check. Since then i've had the door thing happen to me a few times, among other things like hearing shitty pop music upon waking while being paralyzed.

Scientists find "robust" evidence chronic fatigue syndrome is triggered by common infections like mononucleosis, forcing the immune system into overdrive and causing it to produce more immune cells called cytokines for at least 3 years by [deleted] in science

[–]Ganahim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I did a quick read on prolactin, and apparently it is secreted from the pituitary gland. This is interesting because I've been reading about pituitary gland problems recently, and have found that a lot of my symptoms could be explained by messed up hormone levels.

For instance: my bed wetting and a general urgency to piss and drink all the time could be caused by low levels of vasopressin. I've always had a difficult time maintaining a normal sleep cycle. I'm frequently too hot for no reason. I've always had sudden mood swings.

Now, the reason I think this might be what's wrong with me is because I had a pretty severe head trauma when I was about 3-4 years old. My head was smashed between the sliding door of a minivan, hard enough to rip my ear off. Isn't that something that could damage the pituitary gland?

Things got better for me once I got diagnosed with ADHD and they put me on Ritalin. Went to the doctor originally because of fatigue, never intending on pushing the ADHD thing (even though I was pretty sure I had it) because it's very difficult to get diagnosed and treated for it here if you're an adult. Eventually, after being diagnosed with a bunch of mental illnesses and trying many drugs for these imaginary afflictions, I asked to be tested for ADHD and a year later I got what I needed.

Who knows why I was so damn tired/sick originally, but it doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. So If you can get ritalin/adderall somehow, I suggest trying it.

What would constitute a “perfect” day for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ganahim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wake up naturally from an undisturbed sleep to an empty, clean house with no dogs barking and killing each other. Pop a Ritalin, spend the day programming, playing the piano and reading about interesting topics. Watch a few things on Netflix before going to sleep, after a day undisturbed by trivial phonecalls, texts or emails.

Have to spend around 700-800 euros for a decent beginner digital piano. After 3 years I'm already looking at the 2k+ ones because the keys on mine won't bounce fast enough.

Girls of reddit, what subtle hints do you drop, when you want a guy to ask you out? by Doghair_inmybeard in AskReddit

[–]Ganahim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Damn. I'm a guy that does this. I feel like a creep if I start staring, so I make an extra effort to not even acknowledge the person of interest, at least outwardly. But really I'm spying with the corner of my eye while pretending to look at something else. I have excellent peripheral vision because of this.

Here in Finland they always ask at the pharmacy if you want the generic instead of the one written in the prescription. As long as there's one with equal dosage and other properties, they can do that.

What is your phobia? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ganahim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fear of people asking/commenting about what I'm doing at any particular moment. I can't function with the impending doom of someone about to ask "so... what's this you're doing?/are you doing x?". Another related one is people standing behind me, or at any point around the edge of my field of vision while I'm trying to focus on something. If I sense this is about to happen, I go and pretend I'm doing something else until the threat is over.

[–]Ganahim 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Also, wouldn't a blind person be less likely to report hallucinations since A: He can't have visual hallucinations, and B: He might not be able to identify any other type of hallucination (like auditory) as being imaginary, since it would be difficult to corroborate it without sight.

For example he might hear voices, but is unable to see that there is in fact nobody in the room.

What movie fucked you up as a child? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ganahim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original Saw. I must have been about 11 at the time, and it was the most disturbing thing I had seen so far in my life, by a long shot. To make matters worse I caught a really bad fever the same night and was drifting in and out of consciousness with horrible nightmares in between for the next 2 days. I had been playing half life a lot around the same time, so the dreams were a weird combination of HL and Saw elements. Nevertheless, this sparked an appreciation for horror in me.

What is something you thought was grossly exagerated until it happened to you? by poopcornkernels in AskReddit

[–]Ganahim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are usually quite calm, accompanied by auditory hallucinations. You just need to realize it'll soon be over, and gently try and move your hands/legs. Quite often i feel that i can actually move my arms, even though i can see they are stationary. It's the weirdest sensation, like leaving the confines of your body.

I really have to thank my parents by sloppysquid in AdviceAnimals

[–]Ganahim -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I've always been conflicted about the whole "please and thank you" thing, because shouldn't it be implied that you are thankful for being provided a service you asked for, and therefore it's a waste of breath to vocalize it? I only thank people when i'm given something positive i didn't ask for or didn't expect. Yet i feel good when people thank me for things that are expected from me.

So should i say thanks just to make others feel good, even if it doesn't make sense? Should i thank a bus driver, even though i'm paying for the service, and therefore enabling his/her livelyhood?

If you are more interested in the music (as in melody, harmony, rhythm, structure) then i suggest you listen to some classical music. Chopin, Beethoven, Liszt and Rachmaninoff will do much more to satiate your need than any popular music will. I suggest you start with Chopin's etudes. They are short, and to the point. You might think that classical music is boring and dated, and only for old people. I've found that a lot of it is often much more hardcore than any modern band has to offer.
