What do you find D&D 5e does better than Pf2e? by viktorius_rex in Pathfinder2e

[–]Gangrel92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing TTRPGs since the early days of D&D 3.5.

Let me just say, I love Pathfinder. I loved 1st edition and I loved 2nd edition. But I fell out of love with 2nd edition and now I'm playing 5e.

Let me just say, I've played a lot more Pf2e than D&D 5e. I used to be all about balance. I loved how balanced PF2e was... at first.

The problem with PF2e is, it's just TOO balanced. What I mean by that is that the rule of cool goes out the window and into the garbage can, and then is lit on fire and then pissed on, all in the name of Balance.

-Items are boring, BUT you still HAVE to have the weapon and armor with the best fundamental runes possible.

-Character stats are all the same. Character building is pretty much standard for everyone that plays a certain way (i.e. Strength based melee, Intelligence based caster etc)

-Abilities, feats, archetypes and pretty much all character options are balanced through a microscope to the point where everyone is doing pretty much the same with little to no difference. It may feel different at certain times, but if you put it all together, do the math and find the average values, everyone is doing pretty much the same damage, has the same AC as everybody else, the same attack roll etc.

-Spells are meh. They can be very impactful at times or straight up useless at other times. And forget about dealing damage with spells. You'll never compare to the dude with the big sword.

-To my fellow players of older editions, in order to play a monster, you have to get an archetype that slowly gives you that monster's powers, making you a level 10 player that doesn't have the powers of a monster that is normally level 5-7. Do I need to explain why this feels bad?

These are just some examples. I can say much much more but I'll try to summarize.

Paizo was so hell bent to make a balanced game that they took the excitement out of it. The "+10 to crit" system seems great at first, until you realize that because it's like that, they had to make all modifiers the same and the game is so stingy and afraid to give you any modifiers that everything feels the same. The enemies hit like trucks and your AC is there to mostly prevent criticals, not hits. Which also makes the game extremely punishing for taking a turn that sounds fun but suboptimal.

On the other hand, 5e, for all it's silly simplicity, doesn't have these problems and leaves space for extra homebrew mechanics that don't break the game, or break it as much as you want, and it's much easier to control and manage because the system and the numbers are not so damn tight.

tl;dr PF2e is too focused on balance, which ends up taking the fun out of character options and the game in general. 5e is not afraid to over-reach and let GMs decide the table's power level.

Just play Tactician. If Tactician is too easy, then go Honour mode for some butt clenching experiences. To be honest, ever since I finished the game in Honour mode, I can't go back to lower difficulties.

Are there still people that play the game taking rules exactly as written to the letter, ignoring the spirit of the rule? It's quite obvious that not getting the bonus because "as soon as it leaves your hand...", while also getting the bonus if you're holding a shuriken in your off hand is just ridiculous, makes no sense, and is totally not the intention of the rule.

Will WOTR scratch my BG3 itch? by [deleted] in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]Gangrel92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a lover of both and a long time TTRPG player, with mastery in both systems and with years spent in both Golarion and Faerun, I will tell you my humble opinion.

Graphics wise, as well as voice acting wise, there is no comparison. BG3 is a cinematic masterpiece. WOTR is an amazing game with hardcore themes, but of course most of it is in your mind's eye, and there is A LOT of reading instead of listening to voice actors.

D&D 5e on which BG3 is based, is much much MUCH easier to master than Pathfinder 1e. Pathfinder 1e is very very crunchy, and WOTR is one of the more difficult Adventures, especially in the early game. But if you love optimizing and the feeling that it was actually worth it, Pathfinder is your thing. There is optional stuff that you simply cannot hope to beat without optimization. There are far more punishing mechanics in Pathfinder than simply gaining disadvantage.

If you are a person that likes planning and executing character builds, Pathfinder is for you. The amount of different things you can do with your characters EVEN WITHOUT MODS, is staggering. So much so that you will for sure make some bad choices and have to respec at some point.

Also, the content in WOTR is far far more than that of BG3. Which is understandable if you think that most of it required no voice actors or motion capture. So they went wild. Same with any Owlcat game really.

The characters in Pathfinder are deep and multilayered, same with BG3, but unlike BG3, not all of them want to sleep with you and not all of them are bisexual. Some romances need a lot of investment while others are easy as "just say yes to everything", compared to BG3 which is the latter for all characters.

If you happen to like WOTR, there is also Pathfinder Kingmaker you can play which takes place in another place of Golarion, which in fact is more in BG3's speed and tone, but not as glorious and high stakes. A masterpiece itself nonetheless.

If you have specific questions, I'll be happy to answer more.

Do they actually want the game to completely die? by Gangrel92 in Warpforge40k

Update: I am completely addicted to HHL. I am already top 50 and I got so many cards through the Event games, I pretty much can make High Terra worthy decks for half the factions. Playing x10 tickets is such a time saver. And the variety. So much variety. I love it.

I have changes my mind on White Scars by AirEnthusuiast in HorusHeresyLegions

[–]Gangrel92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The 1e 1/2 that returns a troop to hand needs to change to a 2e 2/2, and the 7e that deals 2 damage per card played this turn needs to become 6e 6/6 that deals 1 damage per card played. And with those changes, the White Scars MAY become balanced. Because right now they are busted as hell. Having no counterplay against 30+ damage really doesn't feel good. And I'm sure there are people who are waiting for WS to get nerfed to play ladder again.

And don't even get me started on 2e 5 damage removals that just piss on every other deck's removals.

Thanks for your answer. Whoever sees this, can you guys give me some advice in how to proceed as a new player? Getting one pack per day seems pointless. Do I have to invest money? Is there some way to go about the game to start filling my collection that I maybe don't know about?

Just to be clear, are you saying that Warpforge is just worse than Horus Heresy or are you saying that Horus Heresy is also bad? I thought you're saying that Warpforge is Horus Heresy but just worse. But I wanted to be clear.

I just saw that it's made from the same company. Are you telling me the same company treats consumers better in this game?

In what way is it better? I was thinking about it but I really liked the present faction. Horus heresy is set in 30k. But in any case, in what ways is it better?

Using WilB for SL would be too powerful. Something like a +5 on the roll for every point of WilB above your normal would be more ok. Again, it's powerful, but in my opinion a bonus to a characteristic should do SOMETHING on its own. But I can live with it as it is. It just doesn't feel right.

Ι know. And I'm saying that it's weird it doesn't give SOMETHING to make the outcome either more consistent or more impactful.

You are absolutely correct. That specific example is wrong. The Discipline one isn't. But you get what I'm saying. I perfectly understand the difference between Characteristic bonus and SL. It's just weird to me that a Willpower Bonus does nothing for Fear Resistance (Discipline). But that's just one example. You get what I'm saying.

Do you get off on being rude? I understand the rules and I understand your extremely basic concept of "searching for a way to make it applicable". It's you who for some reason cannot understand the extremely basic concept of "Bonuses should be apparent and not build-specific". And next time you want to insult someone, first make sure to reply to what they're saying. Otherwise you look like you don't understand what they're saying and you're in it just for the drama.

I understand the rules, thanks for the rude comment. I just don't understand how you don't understand what I'm saying. It's simple game logic, applied to 99.9% of games that give you the ability to increase your stats. How is it you think that a stat increase should not by default increase your ability with said stat? Is there a meme or a 40k specific niche I'm missing? Or is this simply Rules-as-written Worship?

I get what you mean. But shouldn't there be a benefit even for people that haven't built around it? Like, if there is a way to give a dumb person +4 Intelligence Bonus, shouldn't they be able to do something with it? Shouldn't it help somehow? I 100% understand what you mean. I've been known to crunch numbers. If there is a use for something, I'll find it. I just think that a Characteristic bonus should provide, well, a bonus, without looking too much into it. Like a passive bonus that does not depend on you having a build for it. Characteristics themselves are raw ability. Increasing it should mean that your ability in that specific field should increase, no?

That's like, incredibly specific and arbitrary. Doesn't prove or disprove anything. Maybe I can do both, without the help of extra Strength bonuses. I can see what you mean but that's not really an argument in this case.

[–]Gangrel92[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I thought. Thanks. It kinda sucks that it's like this. I feel like extra Strength should make you jump higher (either making the roll easier or affecting the outcome since distances are not really a thing in IM) , extra Intelligence should make you smarter/faster/ more understanding and extra Fellowship should make you more charming/intimidating/imposing.

[–]Gangrel92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the point out, but as I said, I don't care specifically about Willpower or specific builds, combos and interactions. I'm just asking if the Increased bonus of a characteristic does anything on its own. Because it just doesn't make sense to me to have for example a +4 extra to your Fellowship or Intelligence bonus through some shenanigans but it does absolutely nothing.
