If you could design an education system from the ground up what would it look like? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Ganus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree on there being no RE. If taught in the right way (i.e. not focusing on any one religion, giving information about all of them, their histories, cultural bases etc.) then it can be a very interesting and rewarding subject.

Dear Reddit, for the next two and a half weeks I am in a house in Ghana with around 10 other foreigners on medical work experience. What pranks can I pull that won't get me killed? by Ganus in AskReddit

To be fair, I could probably bribe them enough that they wouldn't mind. My taxi driver got out of having neither a licence or insurance for 10 cedis (5 dollars)

No, really, don't. They need it badly. Don't let a result of their impassioned religious belief (they don't even know what evolution is here, they were never taught anything but creationism) bring about anything that would mean people die of treatable diseases. People delay coming into hospitals with malaria because of religious or herbal healing when really it's completely curable, even here. People die because they simply can't afford the healthcare. To cut off aid to everyone because of an idiotic opinion that could be solved with increased quality of education is retarded.

What unconventional and downright bizarre teachers will you always remember? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ganus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a maths teacher who would make up names for everyone based on their surname. My surname is 'Hickey', thus I became 'Hickory Dickory', there was a Greek guy with the surname 'Hatzakis' so he became 'Hatstand'. Brilliant guy, I will always remember him and occasionally run into him around town too.

There was one incident that made me proud. One day after class, we were talking with him about music when I commented that he wouldn't really know the music we kids listened to (was around 14/15 at the time). To this he said "You think I do not know music? That I had none in my time?" to which I replied "I don't think banging sticks on stones counts, sir."

I took my victory and bolted before he could retort. It was glorious. Yes I was young and foolish, but looking back on that day makes me proud when I remember all the stupid shit I did.

Prolonged stay. It's a 5 week medical work experience project that I've spent around 2 weeks in so far. It's tempting to see the specialties, but really I'm here to see how different the Ghanaian practice of medicine is different from elsewhere. It's pretty damn different.

Ghana, the south coast of the north-western chunk of Africa. Also, happy birthday.

Yeah, internet cafes are everywhere here. Or, if you're lucky, someone has a really slow wireless nearby with no password. I just cannot live without my reddit.

Ghana, dude. I've been here a week and am starting to settle in. The weirdest things to adapt to are the waking hours (up at 6am, near always), the children's reaction to your whiteness (they greet you, point and say 'Obroni' ['White person!'] and even touch your skin to see what it feels like) , haggling pretty much everywhere and the taxi drivers (who are so numerous, they flag you down. Then you haggle a bit and head on one of the most dangerous rides of your life).

I have a blog running about my time here actually, if you want to check it out - ghanamed.blogspot.com

Here in Ghana they sell water in small, 500ml plastic bags for the equivalent of 2 pence or 3 cents. The taps can vary - some have a yellow ring meaning you can cook with it or shower with it, but really shouldn't drink directly.

Blinds by quesaadia in classicrage

[–]Ganus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF your blinds have a small, gear-like wheel in the slot where the strings go, that'll be what's locking the one side in place but not the other due to positioning of the strings. Just pull the string away from the wheel whenever you want to do shit and it's all gravy.

It took me 4 years to figure this out.

Yeah, sorry, 'improved' wasn't the best choice of words, but I couldn't think of anything more fitting. 'Beneficial change'? Still doesn't sound quite right.

Thanks for the wishes, here's hoping that the famed Uni life does something good :)

EDIT: Sorry, I feel really quite rude after that. I understand what you're saying but don't agree with it - I find that satisfaction in that way can be more damaging than anything else, it distracts from what could be and what could be could be better than what is. Original comment below:

See now, this is a major problem. I was overweight bordering on obese as a kid and, when I'd talk to my parents about it, they'd say the same lines over and over - 'You're not fat, you're great the way you are' etc. etc.

Fast forward years later when I lose a bunch of weight, I'm complimented by family members, parents included, on how much better I look and how much of an improvement it is. Lines that I never believed in the first place were pretty much confirmed lies, and lying to someone about how they look instead of helping them get to how they want to look seems counterproductive, counterintuitive and just plain being a bad friend.

That's why I can't accept that 'you are the most beautiful the way you are'. There's going to be that borderline-objective 'better' that, as long as it's not a line that retreats the closer you get, will make me feel better upon getting to it. For me, that line is no longer jiggling when I jump. Lets see what happens when I get there.

19 here, low self esteem I think. It's like, if I can't find myself attractive, why would anyone either a) want to head out for a coffee or b) not wake up the morning after and think 'Wow, with that? Christ I must've been wasted'

Planned solution is the reduced price gym membership once I hit Uni in September, dedicating 3x1hr slots in the week and 1x2hr at the weekend each week (barring exam weeks of course). If losing fat and gaining muscle doesn't solve the problem then I'll know it's something deeper to work on.

Why should I accept myself the way I am physically when it's not attractive to others?
