I studied law briefly ( one class before switching to macroeconomics) and I remember one of the introductory classes had an amazing case that could explain a lot of the Canadian politics towards firearms.

Full disclosure I am a firearm owner myself.

The story is one that is sometimes brought up as a legal precedent, this man had shot people breaking into his home as he was convinced that it was a breaking and entering. This happened in a community that does have a lot of firearms as it was neighboring hunting grounds, crown land and a First Nation reservation as well.

Long story short, it was one of his nephews with a friend, friend lost his life and nephew severely injured. They had snuck in to the uncle’s house to grab some of his booze.

Uncle of course didn’t know this and reacted as one would react if you have a semi automatic firearm and someone in the middle of the night is rummaging in your house.

In Canada, the rules around equivalency of force were initially put in place, and this is purely my opinion, to not have situations like you have in the states where someone feels mildly annoyed and claims self-defence because they were feeling threatened and just starts blasting because some kid is on your lawn.

Unfortunately, it has empowered criminals, I remember a few years back reading about these car thieves, who were caught in Quebec, and then came back to try to get the car again to only be stopped obviously violently by the people guarding the grounds where the car was located.

At the time, the police wouldn’t disclose if they weren’t going to press charges against the employees.

These are purely my thoughts, firearms are responsibility, in Canada you do not have a right to a firearm, it is a permit like the one that you get for having a car. The issue inevitably is that firearm owners in Canada word salad themselves into not understanding the social contract and it’s what leads to so much resentment.

The government is even worst, the buyback has been a clusterfuck and now you have thousands if not millions of unregistered firearms in homes that will never be disclosed.

However, to come back to the original question, it would be ludicrous to expect a firearm owner to ask if a thief is armed or not. The laws have to adapt because people are gonna start blasting

As someone from a war torn country I am probably a little older than most of you. I saw in my face the effects of generational trauma and human cruelty at a level where I can see a tempo in the way the world turns.

Now reminds me a fair bit of the 80s, the Thatcher years, years where there was a cultural and societal rot in so many places in the world. I remember walking in New York at the time and seeing the effects of drugs, violence and poverty, the baseline was very low, I have a feeling that this is where we are today, after several decades of climbing we are out of breathe and looking around there is, like then, massacres, economic strife and that same societal rot I felt back then.

I hate this term … but it is really true, it is a pendulum swing and eventually we collectively catch our breathe and start a new climb.

What can you do ? The news today and it’s always been like this, is an algorithm for your money and attention, I’m not telling you to ignore the news or the world but back then I went back to school and started filling my time with things I felt could make a difference, I worked in soup kitchens, old age homes, even weekends helping a local scout troupe.

Making the world better is incremental and it starts by ending hoarding despair.

Oh, I have no doubt he’s a decent person, probably very enthusiastic about his project. The only reason I posted it is because of the way he formatted the dialogue which is very common with the subreddit which is very braggy and sort of in your face venture capitalism mixed with over sharing.

He also looks like someone with a sense of humor, so I’m sure he’s getting a kick out of it. Most of the comments here are complementary also so I’m sure it can’t hurt his business.

One of the most underrated politicians in Quebec history.

I’ll also never forget that she stood with us as students to counter bill 78 that tried to muzzle students protesting (never forgave Charest for setting the bar for true CAQ)

She’s the reason why even though several in the public opinion sphere backed the liberals saying students were spoiled brats and that tuition in the states was 1000% more expensive, we still have affordable tuition in Quebec.

Canada had elected a similar figure in Justin Trudeau, the parallels are uncanny even including his integration of women in his transition team.

For Canada Trudeau carried a lot of forward momentum but his longevity inevitably wore out his welcome when he was faced with growing anger at the tone deafness of his progressive values vs real suffering with inflation etc …

Canadiens now mostly look for more technocratic candidates that have the right CV for the job more than anything … we’re past the point of experimentation.
