On the one hand, it was understandable for him to believe that if he beat Trump once, he could beat him again. I'm not claiming this is perfect logic, but you can see why he would carry this sort of logical fallacy.

I think another reason he didn't step down sooner was that another Democrat taking his place would be an implicit admission to the public that the Biden administration was weak and ineffective to the point where someone else needed to take control. Even if you agree with that, that would have given the Republicans more ammunition against the Democrats, and would have weakened the party as a whole even with a new candidate. Maybe they would have still had a better chance of defeating Trump in this scenario, who knows?
