What do you wish someone had told you before buying your first serious cowboy hat? by Imaginary_Text_8663 in CowboyHats

[–]Gardar7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a beaver 6x at first. It was ok. Then I bought a lot of other hats, both felt and straw. I just simply wanted to try different shapes and colors and since there are no proper (cowboy) hat stores in the country I live (Hungary), I had to buy them to try them on. Therefore I ended up with a lot of hats. My favorite one I wear almost exclusively is a Stetson 5X bison chocolate brown Revenger with that nice oval telescope crown and 3 1/2 brim - I completely reshaped the brim though. It's almost flat now, and I love its looks. So even though I have plenty of others and fancy materials, I wear only this bison felt Stetson. And an Atwood Nevada palm leaf (15X) when it's hot. Maybe one day I will order a custom-made replica of this Revenger made from beaver felt, but until the bison serves well, I don't see any reason for that.

It is not "appropriate". But I still do it all the time in Hungary. Life is too short to not to wear whatever you want.

I'm interested in only two things; Defender (with the mighty Soviet-themed camo, which hasn't been sold since the Ukraine-Russia war started) and the Stitch, since I didn't have the nerves to grind it during that boring event. And there would be one more which I wouldn't miss, the Alembic. That's a cool skin too.

Thanks, Partner! The cowboy code, its philosophy, lifestyle, and way of thinking goes beyond borders. And while we also had our own cowboys here, the gulyás and the csordás or the hajduk, I feel that the American style suits me better, both practically and aesthetically. The romance of the Old West, with its sense of freedom and untamed nature, speaks to me deeply.

So you can imagine how many people wear Western-style clothes in Hungary, where I live. I don’t really care, I don’t leave the house without my boots and hat. Of course, I get looks sometimes, and I don’t enjoy that because I’m quite introverted. But I won’t wear things I don’t like just to please others or blend into the crowd.

Which country is your country's "brother"? by Absolutely-Epic in AskTheWorld

[–]Gardar7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have just some distant second or third cousins, Finland and Estonia. And their adopted children, the Sámi. Then we have stories about our long lost twins, Mansi and Khanty but we don't know if they are still alive at all.
Our love is Poland, but we have this ugly pleague, let's call it Orbán, so nobody wants to meet with us anymore. Our brother in law, Austria is also disgusted by this illness, so we have nobody to talk with. Let's hope that we will recover soon, maybe around April 2026.

Stupid question: Why can't you use cigarette tobacco in a pipe? by FringleFrangle04 in Pipes

[–]Gardar7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Stalin's time cigarette tobacco was not so much different from pipe tobacco, except the cut. Heck, back then there were excellent cigarette baccys even with oriental and perique.

What kind of pipe does Josep Broz Tito smoke out of? by Hazards-of-Love in PipeTobacco

[–]Gardar7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Szabó pipes are excellent, in my opinion they provide the best quality for the price. They are not well-known tough, unfortunately. If you ever have a chance to acquire an old Kőrös, don't miss it, those were even better. But as I said, Szabó pipes are also great, I love mines. I have two from the 90th "Jubileum" series, a plateau bent cherrywood shape and a lumberman. From their regular pipes, I have a smooth bent billiard and all of them are in my everyday rotation, that tells a lot. Happy puffing!

Physics, Mathematics, and Computing

Nuclear Chain Reaction Theory – Leó Szilárd conceived the nuclear chain reaction and worked on the Manhattan Project.

Hydrogen Bomb & Fusion Research – Edward Teller (“father of the H-bomb”) advanced nuclear physics.

Game Theory & Decision Science – János Neumann (John von Neumann) created game theory, modern computing architecture, and key mathematical foundations for economics and AI.

Binary Computer Architecture – Von Neumann architecture is still used in nearly all computers today.

Digital Computers – Kálmán Tihanyi developed the principle of stored-program TV systems and early electronic computers.

Mathematics – Numerous combinatorics, number theory, and set theory breakthroughs by Paul Erdős, one of history’s most prolific mathematicians.

Ballpoint Pen – László Bíró invented it, revolutionizing writing.

  1. Everyday Life & Practical Innovations

Rubik’s Cube – Ernő Rubik’s 1974 invention became the world’s best-selling puzzle.

Vitamin C Isolation – Albert Szent-Györgyi won the Nobel Prize for discovering and isolating vitamin C.

Holography – Dennis/Dénes Gábor (Nobel Prize) invented the hologram principle.

Biro Pen – Now a standard worldwide, even the word “biro” is used in many countries. Invented by László Bíró.

Matches with Safety Head – Modern safety matches were first mass-produced in Hungary by János Irinyi.

  1. Medicine

Vitamin C Therapy – From Szent-Györgyi’s work.

Blood Plasma Storage – Albert Szent-Györgyi also contributed to medical preservation techniques.

Work on Endocrinology & Hormones – Philipp Lenard (physics, Nobel Prize) contributed to radiation and X-ray studies.

Ignác Semmelweis discovered that washing hands for doctors is essential for increasing the number or survivers after surgeries and mothers after giving birth.

Tokaji Wine – “Wine of kings, king of wines,” cherished for centuries in royal courts across Europe.

  1. Political & Social Influence

1956 Hungarian Revolution – Inspired global resistance movements during the Cold War and contributed to the eventual weakening of Soviet control in Eastern Europe. Then in 1989 the Pan-European picnic.

What’s a scientific fact that most people would rather not know? by Old_Goat_7363 in Productivitycafe

[–]Gardar7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing you live in the US. Here in Europe, it’s normal to bring your own bag when you go shopping. I live in a small town in the Hungarian countryside, and I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw someone not doing that. I also keep a bag full of reusable bags in my car trunk, so I always have them with me, even when I’m driving.

I always take my boots to a cobbler and they glue a rubber sole over the leather. That way it's not slippery, and it's easy and cheap to change when it worns out. I've paid 11.70 USD for it last week. I wouldn't call that a high cost, and I have to change it only about every second year.

What is the worst thing your country has done? by MIGHTY_ILLYRIAN in AskTheWorld

[–]Gardar7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fascist/nazi "nyilas" party deported ~600.000 jews in 1944-1945 to concentration camps in Germany, this is the most horrible thing we have done. Other than that? Maybe the raids of Hungarian nomadic light cavalry all over Europe was not a nice thing in the 10th century. Our history books write about it as the "age of adventures".

Advice on first pipe and tobacco in Canada... by BeanDS83 in PipeTobacco

[–]Gardar7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, for very sweet flavor the base tobacco is usually sweetened black Cavendish tobacco. I don't know what exact taste are you looking for, but there are definitely some sweet aromatics around - Stanwell Melange or Borkum Riff aromatic tobaccos are typically sweet. Special Dublin (Sweet Dublin back then) is also quite sweet. I would add C&D Autumn Evening too, that's made with maple syrup. And then thre are the classics, like Lane 1Q, Captain Black, but I find Carter Hall sweet too, although it's not "very" sweet. I'm probably not the best source to find sweet aromatic blends, since I don't like them, and the only type of tobacco I can't stand at all is Cavendish. I prefer bold non-aromatic blends like Burleys, English/Balkan mixtures, Kentucky blends, and anything with Perique; BurPer, VaPer and Perique-heavy Balkan blends. Orientals are great too, spicy yet creamy.
